7/2/18:
"M2 Qtr at PAC, Phoenix-Ortega part of 14 at C.G.!":
There were two official sessions of GTA Monday Tennis: an evening one at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley featuring the first of the four M2 Quarterfinal Matches to be played as the team of "Kaptain" Keith Lewkowitz and Arunraj "Air" Nair faced off against William "Bombs Away" Bobila and Elmer "The Glue" Agapito (with both Keith and William reporting); and then the session up at the Cedar Grove Courts started in the late afternoon and went deep into the evening. It got started with a full Challenge Rematch between Jay "The Rising" Phoenix and "Salsa Picante" Edwin Ortega (as reported by Jay). Other contributors to this report from that session are "The Webmaster" Senthil Kumar, "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan and GTA Champion: "King Crush" Chris Chiaro.
It is pretty easy to see that it was a fairly epic Monday night for the league. Let's go to that lone result from the Nutley session and then up to Cedar Grove to close out this report!
The Park Ave. Courts Result:
M2 Quarterfinal Match:
William Bobila/Elmer Agapito over Keith Lewkowitz/Arunraj Nair, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, to become the New # 16 Ranked Team in the Doubles Division while advancing to the Semifinals of the M2 Men's Doubles Tournament! William: 3 Aces on Arunraj; and Arunraj: 1 Ace on William!
The Word from William: We played from around 7:10 to 8:50pm including the warm-up. It was a nice match and it became very interesting and challenging to me and my partner when we lost the 1st Set. It was good we recovered in time to win the match.
The Kaptain's Commentary: They kicked the crap out of us! It was simply as the score indicates, it was a one-sided mauling. The 1st Set makes it look a little better on the scorecard, but at the end they just hammered us. Their serves, volleys, ground-strokes and everything else you can imagine were significantly better than these two representatives from our Nutley group part of the league could muster, at least in this match. Congratulations to William and Elmer on winning! It was fun, but I wish we would have put up more of a fight. Good luck to them in the rest of the tournament!
Samara's Notes: I appreciate the timely reporting from both William and Keith. I also admire both the blunt honesty and competitive desire coming from The Kaptain.
We now head west to Cedar Grove.
The Cedar Grove Results:
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Rematch:
Jay Phoenix over Edwin Ortega, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, to successfully defend both his # 17 Rank in the Advanced Division and his # 2 Rank in the Intermediate Division! No Aces.
Jay has his say: Edwin challenged me to a rematch. We played from 5pm to 6:30. It was a very close match with lots of long rallies. We are pretty evenly matched.
Samara's Notes: I appreciate Jay's timely reporting and congratulate him on winning the rematch. What follows next is a combination of reporting from Senthil, Kris and Chris and I will do my best to report with some semblance of chronological order.
Tito Castolo/Laurie Boughton over Senthil Kumar/Jeremy Gottlieb, 6-3! No Aces.
Scott Bergenfeld/Senthil Kumar over Kris Srinivasan/Abhilash Gadi, 6-1! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: Senthil had that last one with a 6-2 score while Kris had it as 6-1.
Kris Srinivasan/Abhilash Gadi over Scott Bergenfeld/Joe Rodrigues, 6-4! No Aces.
Chris Chiaro/Jeremy Gottlieb over Adam Pienciak/John Rizzo, 6-4! Chris: 2 Aces on John; and Jeremy: 1 Ace on John!
Chris Chiaro/Ryan Pienciak over Adam Pienciak/John Rizzo, 6-0! No Aces.
Ryan Pienciak/John Rizzo over Chris Chiaro/Dino Celis, 6-2! No Aces.
Kris Srinivasan/Abhilash Gadi leading Joe Rodrigues/Tito Castolo, 6-5 (Incomplete when the lights ran out at 10pm)! Joe: 1 Ace on Kris!
The K has his say: Cedar Grove was buzzing with GTA action...especially on such a hot and humid evening. Cheers!
Samara's Notes: I thank everyone for their very timely reporting. It is truly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
