7/14/18:
"Mole-T.J. Shah at RP, Mehta-Haque at MP, R. Shah-Agapito at HP!":
There were three official sessions of GTA Saturday Tennis with the first two coming in the morning and the last in the early evening (seemingly, there was no usual evening session up at The Cedar Grove Courts…if so, nobody reported any results from there): the first one was at the Rose Park Courts in Woodland Park and it featured a "Grove Cup 21" Round of 32 Match between "Del Brotro" Mike Mole and "Teej" T.J. Shah (with Mike reporting); the second one was at the Mountainside Park Courts in Montclair and it also featured a "Grove Cup 21" Round of 32 Match between "The AM Rush" Anish Mehta and "The Great Wall" Muhammad Haque (with both reporting): and the third and final session of the day was at Holster Park in Clifton and it featured a "Grove Cup 21" Round of 36 Match between "Ragin" Rajan Shah and Elmer "The Glue" Agapito (with Elmer reporting).
So each session featured a singular match and that was it…but the day was certainly one of impact, nonetheless. First we go to Woodland Park, next up will be Montclair and then we will finish in Clifton.
The Rose Park Courts Result:
"Grove Cup 21" Round of 32 Match:
Mike Mole over T.J. Shah, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6, (7-3), to successfully defend his # 9 Rank in the Advanced Division while advancing to the Round of 16 of the 21st Annual Grove Cup Men's Singles Tournament! No Aces.
The Mole Memo: We actually began this match at 8pm Friday night. We started playing until T.J. was up 4-3 in the 1st Set and the lights never came on there! So we went to Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, but they were having a fireworks event there. Then we went to Cedar Grove, but it was crowded. So we continued the match on Saturday morning at Rose Park, 8:50am...and finished exactly at 11:12! Wow! It was a really tough match. T.J. was making me move all around the court! I was up 5-4 in the 3rd Set, but T.J. broke my serve to even it up at 5_all. All I had going for me was my serve and my forehand...and I managed to pull it off!
Samara's Notes: I thank Mike for his very timely reporting and also congratulate him on a very hard-fought victory! I also offer kudos to T.J. for such a spirited effort. Yet another match that has a chance at being a Nominee for Singles Match of The Year at season's end!
Samara's Notes: I thank both Mike for his very timely reporting. It is much appreciated. And we now shift south to Montclair.
The Mountainside Park Courts Result:
"Grove Cup 21" Round of 32 Match:
Anish Mehta over Muhammad Haque, 6-0, 6-1, to successfully defend his # 7 Rank in the Advanced Division while also advancing to the Round of 16 of the 21st Annual Grove Cup Men's Singles Tournament! Anish: 5 Aces; and Muhammad: 1 Ace!*
The AM News: My serve was working well, which helped me focus on the return games. The 2nd Set was more competitive with a few Deuce games and Break Point opportunities for him. After the match, I found out that Muhammad has only been playing for a year, which is quite impressive considering his form, especially his serve.
*After the match, I was sitting by the net post and got stung by a wasp on my ear. Muhammad tracked it down, swatted it with his racket, and killed it. I think this deserves an honorary ace at least.
The Muhammad Memo: He was too good. His serves were excellent!
Samara's Notes: I thank both for their very timely reporting. I congratulate Anish on such a dominant victory…and I like his idea about the honorary Ace for Muhammad.
We now move north just a bit to Clifton to finish out the day's action.
The Holster Park Courts Result:
"Grove Cup 21" Round of 36 Match:
Elmer Agapito over Rajan Shah, 6-1, 6-2, to become the New # 27 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division while advancing to the Round of 32 of the 21st Annual Grove Cup Men's Singles Tournament! No Aces.
The Elmer Edition: We met at Holster Park around 5pm. The heat was a brutal 91 degrees with 55% humidity. We started warming up around 5:15. Our match started around 5:35. I had an early break on him in the third game and later finished the 1st Set with a 6-1 score. The 2nd Set started and I also got an early break in his first service game. I was up 3-0, but Raj came back with blazing forehand winners. I got broken in the third game and he held serve in the fifth. He is a solid player, but he told me that he is out of shape coming back from a one month vacation. I amped it up a little bit and started to hold and break his serve to finish the set at 6-2. It was a good match overall. I think our match finished around 6:12.
Samara's Notes: I thank Elmer for his very timely and comprehensive reporting. I also congratulate him on a very impressive victory as Rajan is no pushover!
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
