"Just 4 play at C.G.!":

There was just one session of GTA Monday Night Tennis at The Cedar Grove Courts as the Open Challenge issued by "Ice Berg" Scott Bergenfeld led to "Hurricane" Jose Gonzales answering the call.  There would-be full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match ended up becoming two One-Setters instead (more on that later).

Then, "The Levitator" Levy Lorenzo and "Big George" Jorge Solano arrived and ended up getting into a Doubles One-Setter with Scott and Jose.  As the night grew chillier, they decided to call it a night well ahead of lights out at 10pm.

We now go to the report from Scott.

The Cedar Grove Results:

Jose Gonzales over Scott Bergenfeld, 6-4!  Jose: 3 Aces!

Scott Bergenfeld over Jose Gonzales, 6-3!  Jose: 1 Ace.

The Skinny from Scott: Jose tapped out for what would have been the 3rd Set as he was out of gas.  We mutually agreed to scrap the idea of it being a full match and decided we will just play a full match at another time.  So he did not surrender his rank to me.  He said it was his first time playing this season and his endurance level wasn't there yet.

Then, Jorge and Levy rolled up, so we played a Doubles One-Setter.

Levy Lorenzo/Scott Bergenfeld over Jose Gonzales/Jorge Solano, 6-3!  Jorge: 1 Ace on Scott.  After that, it was getting chilly so we called it a night.

Samara's Notes: I thank Scott for his very timely reporting of those scores.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara

"8 compete at Bubble while 6 others (3 and 3) play Canadian!":

There were two sessions of GTA Sunday Tennis at The Wayne Bubble as it was the two separate Night Owls groups in their late afternoon and early evening sessions.

"Kevlar" Kevin Doyle sent in the lone result (via "Rockin" Robin Wilson) from the first session (the 3 to 5pm group) while "The Webmaster" Senthil Kumar reported the scores from the second session (the 6 to 8pm group).

For both groups, the situation was quite similar as each only had seven players there (a low turnout for both…especially the later group).  In the earlier group, the four ladies in attendance managed to play a full 2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match while the guys (Kevin, Vlad Smolyanskiy and Sam Senowitz) ended up playing Canadian Doubles.

From the later group, "King Crush" Chris Chiaro reported that he only played some unofficial Canadian Doubles along with "The Lumberjack" Ryan Pienciak and "The Lethal Lefty" Lou La Forgia.  They did not even bother keeping score of it (not that it would matter anyway).

We thank all three for their reporting and go to Kevin's report first.

The Wayne Bubble Results:

2 out of 3 Sets Women's Doubles Match:

Brenda Jordan/Susan Koshy over Kathy Sheldon/Robin Wilson, 6-3, 7-5, to become the New # 29 Ranked Team in the Women's Doubles Division!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: I thank Kevin for sending in that result.  And now we go to Senthil's report.

Tom La/Mike Sindler over Senthil Kumar/Ray Spadaro, 6-1!  Tom: 2 Aces (one on each)!

Senthil Kumar/Ray Spadaro over Tom La/Mike Sindler, 6-2!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: I thank Senthil for his very timely reporting of those scores.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara

"Mehta-Bernard at VHS!":

There was just one session of GTA Saturday Tennis and it took place at The Verona High School Courts as tennis buddies "The AM Rush" Anish Mehta and "The Headhunter" Ralph Bernard got together in the morning hours for a full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match (reported by Anish).

The VHS Result:

2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Anish Mehta over Ralph Bernard, 6-3, 6-2, to successfully defend his # 7 Rank in the Advanced Division!  Anish: 3 Aces; and Ralph: 2 Aces!

Samara's Notes: I thank Anish for his very timely reporting of this result.

All the best,

"41 players (8 new, 3 returning) compete at GTA Bubblepalooza 6!":

There was a very special session of GTA Friday Night Tennis to honor the kickoff of the 2018 GTA Season.  The "Bubblepalooza" moniker was coined by "Hollywood" Frank Samara three seasons ago when two of these events were held at The Wayne Bubble that inaugural year of the idea.  But the concept and execution of this event, once again, was the result of the efforts of "The Riz" John Rizzo.

While Rizzo's focus was primarily the invitations and then the accommodations (food, beverages, etc.), Samara's role was making sure that all those that attended had their fair share of court time at The Bubble.

Last year's event set a new record in terms of the number of official competitors in a singular session with 46 players.  This year, Rizzo and Samara set a goal of at least 40 competitors as they were not all that concerned with breaking last season's record (even though a year ago, they had said they would be hoping to hit 50 the following year...but it does make for a much more crowded and difficult session to run).

They exceeded their goal by one when they ended up with 41 actual players attending the session.  And we likely could have tied last year's total of 46 competitors in one session as we easily had at least five last-minute switches of RSVP from "Yes" to "No."

Nonetheless, the event was a tremendous success.  We fell just one new player short of tying last year's Bubblepalooza record-breaking one session total of nine competitors making their official GTA Debut when we picked up eight new entrants to the league this time around.

Samara has done much recruiting during the off-season and a lot of it has been via a most unexpected source: a website called Nextdoor.com.  Back in the summer of 2017, a woman had told Frank that she had seen his name mentioned on the site as a contact for playing tennis in the local area (Nutley, Clifton, Bloomfield and Belleville).

As Samara had a very hectic 2017, he did not get around to actually trying to investigate this post and reply to it until early in 2018.  He could not find the particular post that mentioned his name, so he took it upon himself to post something of his own mentioning the fact that he did, in fact, run a free tennis league and was trying to track down the particular inquiry that had led to the mention of his name.

While the search for that inquisitive party and the other intended helpful party went unsuccessful, the post was unintentionally successful in opening the flood gates for a bunch of new inquiries about the league.  Since that post first went up on the site, we have had over a dozen requests for further information on the league (several of whom also asked to be added to the mailing list).  And of the eight new players that made their official GTA Debut at Bubblepalooza 6, five of them came via the Nextdoor site.

Three years ago, John Rizzo had the idea to create a special session soon after the 2015 Season officially got underway that would include some of his friends from the Wayne Bubble Night Owl Indoor Sessions that he runs along with many more of his friends from the GTA.  This would also enable some of those "Bubble-only" players to then make their official GTA Debut.

Given the fact that there are just four courts at The Bubble, Rizzo thought it best to invite a certain amount of players that he had already established relationships with rather than open it up to the entire league as that could have led to a situation that would grow out of hand.  Furthermore, he relied on RSVPs in order to plan on how much food he should have in advance.

Per the usual Bubblepalooza event, John made sure to have eight pizza pies, a six foot sub, plenty of bags of chips, a veritable plethora of cookies and cupcakes along with plenty of soda as well.  And it was BYOB - Bring Your Own Beer, if the guests wanted to quench their thirst in a somewhat harder fashion.

Before I go further with the details of how this session have unfolded, I just want to once again thank The Riz for offering up his time, services and funds to host this event for the benefit of the GTA.  And I acted as the host of the session in the traditional sense of how we use the term "hosting", i.e. I collected the scores of all the action along the way.

Usually in my results write-ups, I detail the order of entry and/or appearance as the session progresses...but not this time around!  There were just too many people to note...and they came in waves!  All I will say is was yet another epic session that we hope serves as the launching pad to another epic season.  It also served as an introduction (or reintroduction) to the GTA for many players.  It was an amazing way to kick off the 2018 Season...and I thank all those who were a part of it.

Let's get to the action!

The Wayne Bubble Results:

Kevin Doyle/Robin Wilson over Laurie Boughton/Suzanne Bujara, 6-4!  Suzanne: 1 Ace on Kevin!  This was the first official action of the night as it got underway on Court Four at 8:18 and ended at 8:55.

Naomi Lebofsky/Karyn Rosenberg over Brenda Jordan/Marie Salamon, 6-0!  Naomi: 1 Ace on Marie!  It was the official GTA Debut of both Naomi Lebofsky and Karyn Rosenberg.  Although this One-Setter started two minutes later than the One-Setter listed directly above, this one was finished on Court Three (aka "The Show Court" as it is the court directly in front of all the players hanging out in "The Lounge" area who are eating, drinking and watching the action) at 8:35...it took all of 15 minutes for Naomi and Karyn to feel a bagel to Brenda and Marie!

Naomi and Karyn may be new to the GTA, but they are not new to tennis or The Wayne Bubble, for that matter.  In fact, Naomi is part of the Wednesday night group that always occupies Court Three just before the Night Owls group takes it over at 9pm.  Both ladies are solid players and a welcome addition to our league.

Ray Spadaro/Erik Jensen over Rich Liu/Sam Wong, 6-0!  No Aces.  It was the official GTA Return of Erik Jensen.  Court One hosted this one from 8:20 to 8:38.  Even with all the food that The Riz had ordered, it apparently was not enough as two bagels were quickly offered up early in the session...LOL!

Erik had played with us very briefly early on in the 2017 Season as a sub at some (perhaps just one) of the Night Owl sessions there.  This past off-season, he has become a fairly regular attendee at the Friday Night Bubble Parties and he plans on playing with us much more this coming season.

Tom Heidt/Hermie Batausa over Edgar Inclan/Stan Carroll, 6-4!  Edgar: 2 Aces (one on each); Tom: 2 Aces on Edgar; and Stan: 1 Ace on Hermie!  It was the official GTA Debut of Tom Heidt, Hermie Batausa and Stan Carroll and it was the official GTA Return of Edgar Inclan!  This hard-fought battle occupied Court Two from 8:20 to 9:02.

Edgar and Hermie are both friends with William "Bombs Away" Bobila (who was also in attendance on this particular occasion).  In fact, Edgar had a brief run in the GTA last summer where he appeared at The Cedar Grove Courts and even managed to defeat "Del Brotro" Mike Mole in a One-Setter.

While Tom "Gotta Lotta" Heidt (gave him that moniker because he is, in fact, quite tall) has become a regular at the Friday Night Bubble Parties that we have been running during the off-season, this was his first time playing in an official GTA session.  He is a student of "The Adonis" Don Moya's and he says he definitely plans on staying around for the long haul.

And Stan "The Man" Carroll is a tennis veteran who came to us via the Nextdoor site and is happy to have found another place to play.  We welcome all four of these gentleman to the league.

Dan Knitzer/Karyn Rosenberg over Jimmy Sacchetti/Naomi Lebofsky, 6-3!  No Aces.  It was the official GTA Debut of Jimmy Sacchetti.  They played this on Court Three from 8:43 to 9:05.

Jimmy also comes to us by way of the Nextdoor site.  It was not until he arrived at The Bubble and saw Samara making his way thru the revolving door into the lounge area that they realized they graduated from Nutley High School together (Class of 1988).  And then Sacchetti also soon met "The Hit Man" Tom La who was NHS Class of 1985.  Jimmy did not remember him from school, but knew him from a shared workplace (the A&P in Clifton...now Kohl's) many, many years ago.  Sacchetti has not played much tennis since the 90's, but he is looking forward to shaking off more rust with us from here forward.

William Bobila/Nick Inciong over Moka Pathan/Sukumar Mitra, 6-2!  William: 1 Ace on Sukumar!  It was the official GTA Return of Sukumar Mitra.  This one got done on Court One as it lasted from 8:45 to 9:07.

It was nice to see Kumar (aka "The Chef"), a GTA veteran, back out on the courts again.  Personally, he had a very busy year in 2017.  He hopes (and so do we, reciprocally) to see more of us this season.

Dan Hwang/Dino Celis over Mike Mole/Senthil Kumar, 6-4!  No Aces.  This hard-fought and hard-hitting battle was waged on Court Four from 9pm to 9:40.

Soon after the above One-Setter ended, we gathered all of the players around the net on Court Three for some group photos (much like we did at Bubblepalooza 5 - the 2017 Season Closer Party).  Once again, we thank Dino for his efforts in this regard.

Jonathan La/Brenda Jordan over Vince Villanueva/Marie Salamon, 6-0!  Jonathan: 1 Ace on Vince; and Vince: 1 Ace on Brenda!  It was the official GTA Debut of Vince Villanueva.  This was played on Court Three from 9:12 to 9:30.

Jonathan, as many know by now, is the son of Tom La.  He is on the Nutley High School Tennis Team and is currently a senior.  His good friend, Vince, already graduated from NHS and is now at Rutgers (New Brunswick) where I believe he may be on the tennis team there as well.  And Tom told me that Jonathan plans on attending there next year, too.  I guess, for now, we can call Jonathan the "Son of Tom" and Vince can be "V-Dub!"

Alfred Chen/Dawn Peterson over Sam Wong/Genalin Capan, 6-3!  Alfred: 1 Ace on Gen.  These two teams faced off on Court Two from 9:15 to 9:55.

Ray Spadaro/Erik Jensen over Rich Liu/Stan Carroll, 6-2!  Ray: 1 Ace on Stan.  This one also lasted from 9:15 to 9:55, but was played on Court One.

Doinks Srinivasan/Fadia Nicolas over Naomi Lebofsky/Karyn Rosenberg, 6-4!  Fadia: 1 Ace on Naomi!  Court Three was once again the "home court" for Naomi and Karyn, but Doinks and Fadia came in as fresh arrivals who wanted to represent the GTA in a strong fashion.  It was quite the contest...and it got started at 9:37 and finished at 10:12.

Paul Daddio/Moka Pathan over Tom La/Mike Sindler, 6-3!  Tom: 1 Ace on Moka!  This foursome faced off on Court Four from 9:55 to 10:32.

Kevin Doyle/Robin Wilson over Jimmy Sacchetti/Suzanne Bujara, 6-4!  No Aces.  This was a nice and evenly balanced Mixed Doubles affair which was contested on Court Two from 10:02 to 10:34.

Edgar Inclan/Laurie Boughton over Hermie Batausa/Shoni Boyce-Banica, 6-1!  Edgar: 1 Ace on Shoni.  It was the official GTA Debut of Shoni Boyce-Banica.  This one was played on Court One from 10:05 to 10:27.

Shoni is another recruit via the Nextdoor site.  And...as it was a "small world" affair for the trio of Samara, Sacchetti and La earlier in the session, likewise it was for Shoni and Stan Carroll as they both already knew each other from playing tennis elsewhere.  We should also note that Shoni was one of the first arrivals of the evening, but she apparently focused more on the "social party" aspect of the invitation and forgot the prominence of the word "tennis" in the equation as she came dressed to party...fairly formal attire, knee-high boots, etc.  She had a chance to speak with both Frank and Stan (among others) early on and then she soon disappeared.

Well, you got to give her credit as she drove all the way back home to Bloomfield and then returned to Wayne dressed to play later in the night.  Now there is a lady who loves to play tennis.  Both she (along with her husband, at some point) and Stan plan to play more with us in the future.

William Bobila/Nick Inciong over Senthil Kumar/Dino Celis, 6-3!  No Aces.  Court Three hosted this one from 10:18 to 11:02.

Dan Knitzer/Dawn Peterson over Sukumar Mitra/Marie Salamon, 7-6 (9-7)!  No Aces.  Dan and Dawn were up 5-2 in the Tiebreak before it would later get leveled at 6-6 and again at 7-7!  This Mixed Doubles war waged on from 10:30 to 11:29 (just one minute shy of an hour!) on Court One before it was finally done!  It may also be a potential Nominee for One-Set Mixed Doubles Match of The Year at season's end.

Doinks Srinivasan/Genalin Capan over Brenda Jordan/Fadia Nicolas, 7-5!  Doinks: 1 Ace on Brenda!  This Women's Doubles One-Setter was another battle of attrition (played on Court Four from 10:35 to 11:22) as Doinks and Gen had leads of 4-2 and 5-4, but could not put away the tandem of Brenda and Fadia until much later in the contest.

Dan Hwang/Mike Sindler over Mike Mole/Alfred Chen, 7-6 (7-3)!  Mike Mole: 1 Ace on Mike Sindler!  As the night grew longer, so did the One-Setters apparently as this war was waged on Court Two from 10:40 to 11:28.

Jonathan La/Vince Villanueva over Laurie Boughton/Shoni Boyce-Banica, 6-3!  No Aces.  This "Battle of The Sexes" One-Setter took place on Court Three (aka "The Show Court") and it seemed as if most of the crowd in the lounge was on the ladies' side.  The Young Guns jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the gals were not going to go down that easy as they battled back and made it quite interesting.  This fun one lasted from 11:04 to 11:38.

Rich Liu/Sam Wong over Edgar Inclan/Hermie Batausa, 6-3!  No Aces.  These four faced off on Court Four from 11:24 to 11:54.

Frank Samara/Dino Celis over Senthil Kumar/John Rizzo, 6-4!  John: 1 Ace on Dino (on the very first point of the match)!  It went like this: John was broken despite starting with a T-line Ace against Dino as it then shifted to 15-30, 30-All, Break Point, Deuce, Break Point and the break and then Dino held serve (Love-15 soon shifted to Double Game Point, the hold came on Game Point) to take a 2-0 lead.  Senthil held as it went 15-Love and then point for point to Game Point and then the hold, but so did Frank (30-Love, 30-15, Double Game Point which was reduced to Deuce, Game Point, 2nd Deuce, Game Point again and finally the hold) to go up 3-1.  Rizzo held in a battle (15-Love then point for point to Game Point, Deuce and then all Game Points to 3rd Deuce, another Game Point and then the long fought for hold) to get to 2-3 and then Celis was broken (started with a Double Fault, then Love-30, 15-30, Double Break Point and the break) to level the set at 3-3!  Kumar was broken (Love-30, 15-30, Double Break Point and then the break), but Samara held again (Triple Game Point, the hold came on Double Game Point) to increase his team's lead to 5-3.  The Riz held again (15-Love then point for point to Game Point and then the hold) to pull to 4-5, but then The Scorpion Dragon rebounded with a hold of his own (30-Love, 30-15, Double Fault for 30-All, then Game/Match Point and the hold) to get the win!  We played this one on Court One from 11:37 to 12:19.

Both Samara and Rizzo, who are always so preoccupied with keeping everything smooth-sailing at these Bubblepalooza events, like to wait until late in the session to play...ensuring that everyone else got at least two opportunities to play along the way.  John is manning the match-ups and food service while Frank is also aiding in putting together some of the match-ups while also recording all the scores.  By the time they both get into action, they are already somewhat exhausted and then they continue to be distracted by what is going on out on the other courts while they are playing.

So, this was not the best outing for either one.  For Rizzo, couple all that with the fact that he still has some lingering foot ailments and it just becomes a battle just to survive the contest intact.  Needless to say that this battle did not feature the finest tennis, but it was still a spirited effort from all involved.

Don Moya/Mark Cipollini over Paul Daddio/Moka Pathan, 6-2!  No Aces.  Court Two was the site of this very hard-hitting battle that lasted from 11:38 to 12:12.

At the outset, Samara suggested splitting up "The Adonis" and "Master MC" as both are quite experienced players (they are also "The Establishment" of The Bubble...besides "The Boss" Bill Bess, of course), but Daddio said he wanted to go up against the best.  Besides, he and Pathan were victorious together earlier on in the session.

Well, there was a moment where Paul hit an excellent lob over Don's head as both Moya and Cipollini were up at the net at this point...but the much older Mark had the better opportunity to run back diagonally toward the far corner to try to track it down.  He did get to it in time and hit it back with another amazing lob that somehow just missed hitting "the ceiling" of The Bubble and then made its way back down onto the very back part of the baseline.

But all that soon became an afterthought as Mark's momentum sent him sailing into the nets in the back-corner of the court as he went down in a heap with his right leg completely entangled in one of them!  Coming in from the nearby Court One, Frank freed his leg from the net before he and one or two other guys (can't remember who they were) helped Cipollini back to his feet.  You gotta respect a guy willing to take a dive like that...and especially at his age (though I don't know exactly how old he is and I won't speculate here).  He managed to play on and win the contest...quite impressive!

Doinks Srinivasan/Fadia Nicolas over Genalin Capan/Brenda Jordan, 6-3!  No Aces.  Court Three (aka The Show Court) hosted this one from 11:43 to 12:25.  Though the crowd in the lounge was starting to thin out by this time in the evening, those still in attendance were quite vocal in their support for the effort of all the ladies involved.

Mike Mole/Dan Knitzer over Jonathan La/Vince Villanueva, 7-5!  No Aces.  These four fought on Court Four from 11:59 to 12:40.  Earlier in the evening, Dan said he wanted to match up against The Young Guns as he liked their speed.  Given that "The Dark Knight" is still quite young and spry himself, it must have made for a fast-paced match.  "Del Brotro" is still one of the younger players in the league as well and he must have brought his brute force to the mix to make for an interesting contest.

Tom La/Rich Liu over Dan Hwang/Laurie Boughton, 6-3!  Tom: 1 Ace on Dan!  Court Two hosted these two teams from 12:15 to 12:43.  Dan and Laurie had jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Tom and Rich took the last six straight games for the comeback victory!

They got this one done just in time as Cipollini and Moya were kind enough to let us go into overtime, but 12:45 was definitely going to be the cutoff point.  Meanwhile, Senthil and Dino were having a solo hitting session over on Court One ever since the prior Doubles One-Setter had ended.

Many still in attendance, thankful for the overtime and the overall party itself, aided in the cleanup efforts to make things easier for Mark and Don so that they could get the entire Bubble closed up sooner.  All in all, it is simply amazing how many players and how much action we had over the course of a session that lasted about four hours and forty-five minutes!  Once again, thanks to all those who participated and helped us make GTA history.

All the best,
Frank Samara

2/22 Results.

2/22/18:

"13 play at The Bubble!":

There was just one session of GTA Thursday Night Tennis and it was the usual Night Owls session at The Wayne Bubble run by "The Riz" John Rizzo along with "Hollywood" Frank Samara acting as host to collect scores along the way.

As the usual Night Owls players made their arrivals around 9pm, Rizzo tried to figure out what the best match-ups would be.  "SWAT" Rich Liu was hoping to team with Samara again and perhaps this time around get the chance to play a full 2 out of 3 Sets Match in order to get their team ranked in the Doubles Division.

It turned out that The Riz would be able to accommodate that request...until fate had other plans!

On Court One, it would be "The Voice" Dan Hwang teaming with Dennis "The Menace" Cabanatan to take on "Hit Man" Tom La and "The Sin Man" Mike Sindler.

On Court Two, "King Crush" Chris Chiaro teamed with "The Webmaster" Senthil Kumar to face "The Lumberjack" Ryan Pienciak and "The Lethal Lefty" Lou La Forgia.

And on Court Three, Rizzo would team with "The Adonis" Don Moya to do battle with Samara and Liu.

Injuries to Rizzo and Cabanatan along with a late arrival by "Daddy O" Paul Daddio would all combine to throw a monkey wrench into the plans of Frank and Rich.

The Wayne Bubble Results:

Chris Chiaro/Senthil Kumar over Ryan Pienciak/Lou La Forgia, 6-3!  No Aces.  This was the first official action of the session as it got underway on Court Two at 9:15.  Not sure when it ended as it went right into the next set which we will get to later in this report.

Frank Samara/Rich Liu leading John Rizzo/Don Moya, 2-1 (Incomplete when Rizzo decided to step off to allow Daddio to take his place)!  No Aces.  Here's how it was going: Don held serve (Triple Game Point was reduced to Game Point, but then came the hold), Rich held at Love, but John was the first to be broken (Triple Game Point got cut down to Deuce and then it was all Break Points to 3rd Deuce and then one more Break Point for the break) for 1-2.  We stopped it here as Daddio was practicing his serve on Court Four as it seemed there would be no other late arrivals to match up with him.  Meanwhile, Rizzo's nagging foot issues reared their ugly head once again.  So, that was it.  This partial set ran on Court Three from 9:20 to 9:40.

Tom La/Mike Sindler over Dan Hwang/Dennis Cabanatan, 6-4!  Tom: 2 Aces (one on each)!  They got this one started on Court Two at 9:25.  Not sure when it ended, but it seemed like it finished a few minutes before 10pm.  Cabanatan's nagging shoulder issues (seems to be tendonitis...much like what is currently afflicting Rizzo's right foot) forced him to step out of the action.

Paul Daddio/Don Moya over Frank Samara/Rich Liu, 6-2!  Paul: 1 Ace on Rich!  It went like this: Frank held serve (Love-15 and then straight to Double Game Point and the hold), Paul held (started with a corner Ace on Rich, then it went to 15-All before going to Double Game Point and the hold came on Game Point), but Rich was the first one to be broken (15-Love went straight to Double Break Point and then the break) for 1-2.  Don was also broken (Love-15 went straight to Double Game Point, but then a Double Fault made it Game Point and then came Deuce, Break Point and the break) to level the set at 2-2, but from there it was Samara getting broken (Love-15 then point for point to Break Point), Daddio holding serve again (30-Love, 30-15, Double Game Point, Game Point and then the hold), Liu was broken again (15-Love then point for until 30-All, Break Point and the break) and then Moya held (15-Love then point for point to Game/Match Point with a Double Fault for 30-All along the way and then there was another Double Fault to make it Deuce, then the win came on the 2nd Game/Match Point.  We played this on Court Three from 9:45 to 10:10.

The Skinny: Samara and Liu would once again be denied the chance to team together for a full match in order to get ranked in the Doubles Division.  The reason why this match-up could not blossom into a full match is because Cabanatan had re-aggravated his on-again, off-again shoulder injury.

When Rizzo noticed that Sindler was now sitting out while Hwang and La were having a hitting session with one another, he decided to make some moves.  John asked Don to abandon Court Three to allow Mike to take his place.  But before we get to that, first...

Ryan Pienciak/Lou La Forgia over Chris Chiaro/Senthil Kumar, 6-3!  No Aces.  Not sure when this began or when this ended on Court Two as they then went into another set (which failed to get completed...more on that later in this report).

Dan Hwang over Tom La, 6-3!  Tom: 1 Ace.  They got this one underway on Court One somewhere around 10pm.  Not sure when this finished as they went right into another One-Setter with one another.  That one would end up as unfinished business and we will get to it later in this report.

Paul Daddio/Mike Sindler over Frank Samara/Rich Liu, 6-2!  No Aces.  Here's how it went down: Paul held (15-Love shifted to 15-30, then 30-All, Break Point, Deuce, Double Fault for Break Point, 2nd Deuce, Game Point and then the hold), Rich was broken (started with a Double Fault as he was on the road to ruin as the game quickly went to Triple Break Point, then it was Double Break Point before the break came for 3-0) and Mike held (Triple Game Point, the hold came on Double Game Point) to take a 3-0 lead for his team.  Frank held (Love-30 took a hard shift as it went right to Game Point and the hold) to get his team on the scoreboard, but then Daddio held again (Triple Game Point was cut down to Game Point, but then came the hold) for a 4-1 lead.  Liu then held as well (30-Love, 30-15, Double Game Point and the hold) to pull to 2-4, but from there it was Sindler holding again and this time it was at Love and then Samara was broken (started off up 15-Love only to have it go straight to Double Break/Set Point, the break and the loss came on Break/Set Point).  We played this on Court Three from 10:12 to 10:38.

At this moment, both Paul and Mike had to leave.  So Don came back out onto Court Three to play some Canadian Doubles with Frank and Rich.  The unofficial score ended up being: Moya - 6; Samara - 3; and Liu -3.  Points could be scored on either side of the net (if the Singles player holds, he gets a point...if the Doubles team breaks the server, they each get a point).  Moya was only broken once!  We played it right up until 11pm.

And now come the incomplete One-Setters of the evening.

Ryan Pienciak/Lou La Forgia leading Chris Chiaro/Senthil Kumar, 5-4 (Incomplete when it had to be stopped at 11pm)!  No Aces.

Dan Hwang tied with Tom La, 2-2 (Incomplete when it had to be stopped at 11pm)!  No Aces.

Overall, it was an action-packed session with the lead story being that the Samara/Liu tandem seems somewhat jinxed as every time they try to play a full 2 out of 3 Sets Match to get ranked as a team in the Doubles Division, fate has other plans!

Sincerely,
Frank Samara

"DePol-Mazur B.O.T.S. in Wood-Ridge, 9 compete at Bubble!":

There were two sessions of GTA Wednesday Tennis on a day where the peak temperature reached an amazing 80 degrees!  And three would have been three if it were not for the rains that rolled through the area around 7:10/7:15pm which killed the chances of any evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts.

So there was a late-afternoon session at The Wood-Ridge Courts as "ADP" Austin DePol and "Automatic" Anna Mazur got together to play a full "Battle of The Sexes" Match.  Via e-mail, they had scheduled the match a couple of days in advance as Anna had been the first one to respond to Austin's Open Challenge.

And then there was the usual Night Owls session at The Wayne Bubble.  There were actually eleven players at the session, but we never collected any results involving Ted Cedroski and Vlad Smolyanskiy.

The Wood-Ridge Courts Result:

"Battle of The Sexes" 2 out of 3 Sets Match:
Austin DePol over Anna Mazur, 6-1, 6-0!  No Aces (apparently).

Anna's Annotations: His service is excellent.  It was great to play him...a very challenging match.  Afterward, we played a standalone Tiebreak (unofficial) for fun and he won it, 8-6.  It took one hour and sixteen minutes to play all of this...we played in the late afternoon.

Samara's Notes: I thank Anna for submitting this result along with her commentary.

We will now recap what took place at The Wayne Bubble.

Wednesday night last week, we had a 2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Doubles Match between the teams of "Hollywood" Frank Samara/"Suddenly" Susan Koshy and "The Riz" John Rizzo/Fadia "Finesse" Nicolas.  And the action was quite good…so we decided to have a rematch this week now that we are into the official season.  Plus, John and Fadia wanted to try to exact a measure of revenge as it was Frank and Susan who had emerged victorious the prior week.

The Wayne Bubble Results:

2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Doubles Match:
Frank Samara/Susan Koshy over John Rizzo/Fadia Nicolas, 5-7, 6-1, 12-10 (Super Tiebreak), as both teams entered the Mixed Doubles Division as the New # 58 and # 59 Ranked Teams respectively!  Fadia: 1 Ace on Susan in the 1st Set; and Susan: 1 Ace on Fadia in the 1st Set!

1st Set: John held serve (Love-15 went straight to Double Game Point and then that was reduced to Deuce, another Game Point, 2nd Deuce, yet another Game Point and then the hold), Frank held at Love and then Fadia was the first to be broken despite starting off with a nice sideline Ace against Susan, but then it went to 15-30, 30-All, Break Point and the break for 1-2.  Susan then held (Love-15 shifted to 30-15, 30-All, Game Point and then a T-line Ace against Fadia for the hold and then Rizzo was broken (Triple Break Point, the break came on Double Break Point) as his team fell to 1-4.  Samara held again (Love-30 shifted straight to Game Point and the hold) to take what seemed to be a very commanding lead at 5-1.  But then Nicolas held (Triple Game Point, the hold came on Double Game Point) and Koshy was broken (Love-15 shifted to 30-15 and then another shift to Break Point and then the break) to have her team's lead cut to 5-3.  The Riz then had a Love hold and Hollywood was broken for the first time as a 15-Love start went straight to Double Break Point and the break to level the set at 5-5!  Fadia Finesse held again (30-Love, 30-15, Double Game Point and the hold) and then Suddenly Susan was broken again (Love-15 shifted to 30-15 and then another shift to Break/Set Point, Deuce and then the break came on the 2nd Break/Set Point) as the Rizzo/Nicolas tandem took six straight games to cap an incredible comeback to take the initial set which had started at 9:20 and finished exactly at 10pm.  Three minutes later, the next set was underway.

2nd Set: John was broken (30-Love shifted to 30-All, Game Point, Deuce, Game Point, 2nd Deuce, Break Point and then the break), Frank was broken (Love-15 then point for point until 30-All and then a mini-shift to Game Point, Deuce, Game Point, 2nd Deuce, Break Point and then the break), Fadia was broken (15-Love shifted to 15-30, 30-All, Break Point, Deuce, Break Point, 2nd Deuce, Break Point and then the break), but Susan was the first to hold serve in this set (Love-15 shifted to 30-15 and then another shift to Break Point, Deuce and then it was all Break Points all the way to 3rd Deuce, then Game Point and the hold) to go up 3-1.  Rizzo was broken again (15-Love went straight to Double Break Point, then Break Point and the break) while Samara held at Love to go up 5-1.  It was at this moment when Frank somewhat jokingly warned Susan that they were here once before.  But this time they got the job done as they broke Nicolas at Love on Triple Break/Set Point to level the match at 10:40.

Prior to the 2nd Set, the four parties involved agreed that if the sets were split…they would play a 10-Point Super Tiebreak rather than a full 3rd Set as Rizzo was having some pain issues with his feet plus having enough time to finish the match was also a growing concern.  Two minutes later, the STB was underway.

STB: Susan was broken on her lone serve while John held his first, but was then broken on his second for 2-1.  Frank was broken on his first, but then held his second for 2-3.  Fadia held her first for 4-2 at the changeover, but was then broken on her second for 4-3.  Koshy held her first in what was clearly the longest rally of the match (a match that was chock full of long rallies!) to level the STB at 4-4, but then she was broken on her second for 4-5.  Rizzo held his first, but was broken on his second for 6-5.  Samara was broken on his first for 5-7 at the second changeover, but then held his second for 6-7.  It was Nicolas who was the first to hold both of her serves to give her team a 9-6 lead and Match Point for her team!  But then Suddenly Susan pulled off the same feat of holding both serves and saving two Match Points to pull to 8-9!  Still, there was a 3rd Match Point in favor of the opposition with service returning to The Riz.  He was broken on his first serve for 9-9 at the third changeover, but then he held his second for a 10-9 lead and a 4th Match Point in favor his team.  The Wood held his first serve to level it again to make it 10-10 and then held the second as well to take an 11-10 lead and earn the first Match Point for his team (which was the 5th M.P. overall).  Service returned to Fadia Finesse, but she could not hold her serve as the Samara/Koshy team pulled off a mini-comeback of their own by saving 4 Match Points and then getting the win on their first M.P. opportunity!  This match ended just in time at 11pm!

The Skinny: On the only the second day of the 2018 Season, we have a very likely Nominee for Mixed Doubles Match of The Year at season's end.  I've given Ms. Nicolas the new moniker of Fadia Finesse as she has a very deft touch with her volleys and drop shots when she gets to the net.  Her game was much steadier this week than the week before.  And I had never given Ms. Koshy a proper nickname before, but she is Suddenly Susan as she is a surprisingly good get-maker as she is able to make sudden bursts to short balls and then punish them with her high-powered forehand shots.

To his credit, John made several great gets despite enduring much foot pain (including tendonitis on the side of one of his feet…I cannot remember which one).  As for me, I got off to a hot start…picking up from where I left off last week…plus it is the way I have played for much of the week.  But midway thru that 1st Set, the wheels came off as I started a shank-fest of shots as they went sailing off the frame of my racquet left and right!  Thankfully, I got my act back together in the 2nd Set to turn the tide of the match back in my team's favor.  Much credit goes to Susan who was not only ever-ready, but also very steady as well.  It was a very fun match.

We now go to "Kevlar" Kevin Doyle who sent in the additional results from the session.

Sean McHugh/Sam Senowitz over Kevin Doyle/Jeanette Pegg, 6-4!  No Aces (apparently).

Don Moya/Sean McHugh leading Kevin Doyle/Sam Senowitz, 5-4 (Incomplete when the session ended at 11pm)!  No Aces (apparently).

Samara's Notes: I thank Kevin for sending in those additional scores.

Sincerely,
Frank Samara

2/20 Results.

2/20/18:

"Edwin-Omar part of 9 (1 new) at C.G., 4 play at PAC, 10 at The Bubble!":

There were three sessions of GTA Tuesday Night Tennis on the Official Opening Day of the 2018 Season: the first one being at The Cedar Grove Courts starting in the late afternoon as an Open Challenge was issued by "Ice Berg" Scott Bergenfeld.  That challenge was answered by "Big George" Jorge Solano, but they only ended up playing a One-Setter.  But beating them to the punch was a full Challenge Match (though once a 10-Point Super Tiebreak was played in lieu of a full 3rd Set, rank was no longer on the line) between "Salsa Picante" Edwin Ortega and "Stealth" Omar Santos.  From there, "The Marathon Woman" Doinks Srinivasan ended up being the impromptu host of the rest of the session.

This session would not have even been possible if it was not for the fact that "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan called his connection at the Cedar Grove Parks and Recreation Department and got them to put the lights on earlier than usual.  In fact, he believes they will now stay on for the rest of the season.

The second session was an evening get together at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley as "SWAT" Rich Liu (he earned that new moniker for the way he was successfully swatting down so many balls up at the net) sent out a message to his Meet-Up Group.  That led to some GTA and non-GTA players showing up, but the biggest surprise was the late arrival of "Hollywood" Frank Samara at 8:40.

Earlier in the day when seeing how things were developing with the announcements and/or challenges issued by Scott, Kris and Rich, Frank stated he would almost surely stay home given the fact he had been dealing with a killer headache all along plus his son was sick.  But later in the evening, the headache subsided...his son started feeling better...and Samara was suddenly free to go!  It was a good thing he did as there were only three players remaining by the time he got there...more on that later.

We should also say that this second session was made possible by similar string-pulling from Rich with a connection he has at the Nutley Parks and Recreation Dept.

And the third session was the usual one at The Wayne Bubble with "The Riz" John Rizzo organizing and running that Night Owls Group.  "The AM Rush" Anish Mehta and Tony "Sure Shot" Shiao tried to play a full Challenge Match, but they ran out of time.  So it will end up being two One-Setters followed by an incomplete one.

With such amazingly warm weather for this time of year (69 degrees on February 20th?!?!), it only made sense to move up the official start date of the 2018 Season from Friday the 23rd to Tuesday the 20th.  As nice as it was, it was also quite humid.

We will first go to the results sent in by Omar, Scott and Doinks from Cedar Grove.  Then we will have the full recap of the action from Nutley.  And we will finish this report with the scores sent in by John and Anish from The Wayne Bubble.

The Cedar Grove Results:

2 out of 3 Sets Match:
Omar Santos over Edwin Ortega, 5-7, 6-1, 10-5 (STB)!  No Aces.  Once they went to the Super Tiebreak, rank was no longer on the line in this match.

Samara's Notes: I thank Omar for sending in that result.  We now go to Scott who sent in a little commentary as well.

Scott Bergenfeld over Jorge Solano, 6-2!  Jorge: 1 Ace up the T (the first Ace of the season)!

The What Not from Scott: Omar and Edwin were finishing their match when I arrived and I had the chance to hit with Omar while waiting for Jorge.  We left around 7:45 and all four courts were empty at that time.

Samara's Notes: I thank Scott for his report.  Those courts would not remain empty for long as the next batch of GTA players would soon arrive.  We now go to Doinks for the rest of the action at Cedar Grove.

Ryan Pienciak/Roger Karapin over Moka Pathan/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-1!  No Aces (apparently).  It was the official GTA Debut of Roger Karapin.

Moka Pathan/Doinks Srinivasan over Kris Srinivasan/Roger Karapin, 6-4!  No Aces.

The Details from Doinks: Dino Celis also came, but he didn't want to play because he just had a "huuuuge" dinner just before.  He left after 15 minutes.  We ended the session early around 9pm as both Moka and Roger had to leave at that time.

Samara's Notes: I thank Doinks for her report.  I also welcome Roger to the league.  For the time being, we will call him "Mr. 600" as he is the 600th male player to have ever played in the GTA!  That means we have had 100 men come into the league since the debut of "Mr. 500" Levy Lorenzo (aka "The Levitator") which was as recent as 2016!

We now head from Cedar Grove to Nutley for the full recap of how that session unfolded.

When Samara pulled into the parking lot at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley at 8:40, he saw that all four courts were full!  But all was not well when he first arrived.

On Court One, it seemed that Rich was engaged in a One-Setter with his buddy, "Ravishing" Randy Doran, but it turned out to be just part of a "King of The Mountain" session as their third wheel, "The Edge" Edgar Valencia was practicing his serve on Court Two.

And over on Court Four was a couple hitting against one another.  Later in the night as they were leaving, they said "good bye" to both Rich and Edgar.  So it seems they are part of the Meet-Up Group, but not the GTA.  Also, Rich had said that earlier in the evening, "The Art Font" Arthur Fontanilla had played with them...but nothing official for the league.

Back to the problem that Samara saw upon his arrival...it was a bunch of high school kids on Court Three playing soccer!  And then Frank saw an errant kick send the ball over in Edgar's direction.  Already, Frank was fuming!

Not sure if Edgar said something to them or if the group noticed the anger in Frank's eyes as he headed toward the courts, but thankfully they all gathered their things and left at that time.

We then agreed to play Doubles and hoped to have a full match between the teams of Samara/Liu and Doran/Valencia.  But the clock had other ideas!

The Park Ave. Results:

Frank Samara/Rich Liu over Randy Doran/Edgar Valencia, 6-4!  Edgar: 1 Ace on Rich!  The quick lowdown as I did not note who hit what winners where and when in order to save time (we were hoping to play a full match as we got it started on Court One at 8:50, but we did do the changeovers and I did write down quick notes to summarize each game): Rich was broken (Triple Break Point, broken on Double Break Point), Randy was broken (Triple Break Point cut down to Break Point, but then broken), but Frank was the first to hold serve (15-Love, 15-All then onto Double Game Point, the hold came on Game Point) for a 2-1 lead.  Edgar also held (15-Love, 15-All, a nice sideline Ace against Rich for 30-15, then a Double Fault for 30-All, Game Point and the hold) and then Liu was broken again (15-Love, Double Fault for 15-All and then onto Double Break Point, bounce back to Deuce, then Game Point, 2nd Deuce and another Double Fault to make it Break Point, 3rd Deuce, Game Point, 4th Deuce, Game Point, 5th Deuce, Break Point and then the break to end the struggle) to lose the lead at 2-3!  Doran was also broken again (15-Love went straight to Double Break Point and then a Double Fault to break himself) and level the set at 3-3, but then Samara was also broken (Triple Break Point, broken on Double Break Point) to lose the lead again, this time at 3-4.  Valencia was also broken (Love-30, 15-30, Double Break Point, Break Point and the break) to knot the score once more, this time at 4-4!  SWAT finally held serve (Love-15 shifted to 30-15, then it was 30-All where a Double Fault set up Break Point, but then it went to Deuce, Game Point and the hold) while The Ravishing One was broken a third straight time (Love-30 shifted to 30-All, then Break/Set Point where he once again broke himself with a Double Fault!) to drop the set at exactly 9:28.

Two minutes later, we started what we had hoped would be the 2nd Set of a full 2 out of 3 Sets Match.  We had even discussed the possibility of playing a 10-Point Super Tiebreak in lieu of a full 3rd Set if Doran and Valencia took the 2nd Set in order to have it be a full match for ranking both teams in the Doubles Division.  We were oh so close, but it was not to be...as you will now see!

Frank Samara/Rich Liu leading Randy Doran/Edgar Valencia, 5-2 (Incomplete as it was Deuce and lights out at 10pm)!  No Aces.  Here's how it was going: Frank held at Love and then Edgar was broken in a battle (15-Love, a Double Fault for 15-All and then point for point to Game Point, Deuce, Game Point and then another Double Fault to make it 2nd Deuce, Break Point, 3rd Deuce and yet another Double Fault to make it Break Point once again, 4th Deuce, Double Fault for Break Point and yet another Break Point to break himself) to get his team off to a 0-2 start in this set.  Rich was broken (15-Love, a Double Fault for 15-All and then onto Double Break Point, then Break Point and then a Double Fault to break himself as well) and then Randy finally held serve (Love-15 shifted to 30-15, 30-All, Game Point and the hold) to level things at 2-2.  Samara held again (30-Love, 30-15, Double Game Point and the hold) while Valencia was broken again (15-Love shifted to 15-30, 30-All, Break Point, Deuce, Break Point again and then the break) to fall to 2-4.  Liu held (Triple Game Point, Double Fault for Double Game Point, but then the hold) to increase his team's lead to 5-2 and then Doran was on serve as he got off to a 30-Love lead, it was then 30-15 and then Double Game Point before that was reduced to Deuce and just as he was about to serve...LIGHTS OUT!

It was frustrating not to be able to finish the match...and not just for Samara/Liu, but for Doran/Valencia as well as both teams would have then been ranked in the Doubles Division.  But, still, it was a lot of fun.  The action was intense.  Everyone but Rich got pelted with the ball hard at least once.

Randy noticed how much better Rich was playing since he has been competing fairly steadily up at The Wayne Bubble during the off-season.  Liu was such a force at the net, that we kept coming up with new monikers for him (as we never really had a good one for him...first it was "Richie Rich" and then it was "Richie Running Things").

Well, tonight, we first called him "The Finisher" as he kept finishing points up at the net.  But then when Randy noted how Rich was swatting away at those shots (not an insult...as most of the time those short and quick swings were successful), we then said he was "The Swatter."  But, ultimately, Samara decided that "SWAT" was a cooler sounding moniker than "The Swatter."

It may have ended up being a short session officially, but it was one with much hard-fought action throughout the course of it...and it was a whole lot of fun and it felt like a bonus just getting to play in such spring-like weather in February.

We now head up to The Wayne Bubble for those scores.

The Wayne Bubble Results:

2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
John Rizzo/Tom La over Mike Sindler/Jonathan La, 7-5, 6-1, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 142 and # 143 Ranked Teams respectively!  It was the official GTA Return of Jonathan La.  No Aces (apparently).

3 out of 5 Sets Doubles Match:
Ryan Pienciak/Nick Caputo over Chris Chiaro/Senthil Kumar, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, to successfully defend their #126 in the Doubles Division!  No Aces (apparently).

Samara's Notes: I thank John for collecting and reporting those scores.  We now get the final batch of results from Anish.

Tony Shiao over Anish Mehta, 6-1!  Total Ace count to come after the next full One-Setter and then the incomplete one to follow.

Anish Mehta over Tony Shiao, 6-3!

Anish Mehta leading Tony Shiao, 5-4 (Incomplete at Deuce when time ran out at 11pm)!

The AM News: Although we intended to play it as a full match, we were not really thinking about it being a challenge for rank as Tony was likely unaware that the season had officially begun.  We had to stop right at 11pm, mid-point.  The match could have ended in 30 seconds…or could have lasted another 20 minutes.  It was a tough match and too bad there was no proper closure to it.

Samara's Notes: I thank Anish for reporting the results along with his additional commentary.

Well, it turned out to be quite a Season Opening Day (and evening) for the GTA!

Sincerely,
Frank Samara
