Round of 16 Match
May-10: Jane Fan over Sue Koziol, 6-3, 6-3, to successfully defend her # 9 Rank in the Women's Division while also advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Women's Championship Tournament! No Aces.
The Scoop from The Super Trooper: This match lasted from 11am to 12:20. It was a beautiful day for some tennis!
Samara's Notes: I thank Sue for sharing that result with us.
May-10th: Doinks Srinivasan over Miriam Mendez, 6-2, 6-1, to successfully defend her # 2 Rank in the Women's Division while also advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Women's Championship Tournament! In the process, Mendez entered the Women's Division as the New # 17 Ranked Player. No Aces.
May-7th: Sally Pillay over Brenda Jordan, 7-5, 6-2, to successfully defend her # 8 Rank in the Women’s Division while also advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Women’s Championship Tournament! No Aces (apparently).
The Details from Doinks: Thanks to Miriam for being readily available to take Mindy Zhang's place (Mendez was the Wild Card replacement). We played at the Verona HS courts. We probably started at 7:15 and finished around 8:30pm. The lighting was poor and all four courts were not in great condition. But she is a trooper and just played through. It was both our first time to play on these courts.
I don't think she played at her usual level based on what I have heard from different people. She also has not played much this year. I hope she can play with us more as the weather continues to improve.
I should say that she had several vicious forehand and backhand winners that caught me flat-footed a few times. Those are consistent with what I heard. Luck was also on my side last night with fewer errors than usual. Cheers!
Samara's Notes: I thank Doinks for her report and congratulate her on her victory. I also thank Miriam for being ready and willing to step up in the place of Mindy who had a trip scheduled and would not be back in time for the Round of 16.
May-7th: Sally Pillay over Brenda Jordan, 7-5, 6-2, to successfully defend her # 8 Rank in the Women’s Division while also advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Women’s Championship Tournament! No Aces (apparently).
Some Spicy Dish: Brenda fought hard and never gave up. There were lots of Deuce games. The 1st Set was close as I was up 4-2, Brenda fought to tie it 4-4 and then we held to 5-5 until I got the break to close it out. She was great and just fell short. It was a great match.
The Bravo Brief: She played great and was very consistent. I made a lot of mistakes and was extremely tired, playing Singles for the first time in a quite a while. It was fun though, and I'm glad I participated in the tournament.
The Say from Papa K: The fiesta to happen was The Women's Championship Tourney Round of 16 Match between Sally and Brenda. It was a great match with amazing rallies, it was well contested.Laura Gawley over Natalie Guzman, 6-1, 6-0, to successfully defend her # 1 Rank in the Women's Division plus advance to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Women's Championship Tournament!
The Say from Papa K: I got to see the last part of the match, and it was a treat. Laura was clinical in her thumping win as she constructed her points systematically by playing a few shots deep before coming in to the net and closing the point. Natalie played solid shots both forehand and backhand, but some of Laura's well-paced shots didn't give her much time to play deep…and it also didn't help that she was completely rooted to the baseline throughout the match. She did have an amazing backhand down the line winner to Laura's serve. Overall, it was an offensive approach that Laura took that kept Natalie on a defensive mode. This was a must watch match as to how to play strategically. Cheers!
Samara's Notes: As always, I thank Kris for being the host with the most up at Cedar Grove and providing us with his very comprehensive reports. And I also must congratulate Laura on her impressive victory…and a shout out to Natalie for her valiant effort as well.
