"2 play in MP, Valencia-Liu in BP, 16 play at C.G.!":
There were three sessions of GTA Friday Tennis: an early afternoon one at the Mountainside Park Courts in Montclair featuring a couple of One-Setters between "The Scorpion Dragon" Dino Celis and "The Headhunter" Ralph Bernard (as reported by Dino), an evening one at the Brookdale Park Courts in Bloomfield featuring a full Challenge Match between "Effortless" Edgar Valencia and "SWAT" Rich Liu (as reported by Rich) and then the usual evening session at the Cedar Grove Courts featuring report contributions from Laura "The Aura" Gawley, "Bravo" Brenda Jordan, "The Professor" Tim Nguyen, "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan and "The Riz" John Rizzo.
Let's go to Mountainside Park, then Brookdale Park and finally Cedar Grove for the balance of all the results for that day and evening!
The Mountainside Park Results:
Dino Celis over Ralph Bernard, 6-4! Ralph: 3 Aces!
Dino Celis over Ralph Bernard, 7-5! Ralph: 2 Aces!
The Details from Dino: We played from 4pm to 5:30. Ralph did not want it to count as a rank defense, so it will be two separate One-Setters.
Samara's Notes: While these One-Setters were being played, the May Rank Defense Review was released which served to flip the positions of these two players in the Advanced Division (GTA Rankings). Neither one was aware of it at the time. I thank Dino for his very timely reporting.
The Brookdale Park Results:
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Rich Liu over Edgar Valencia, 6-0, 6-4, to become both the New # 21 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division and the New # 6 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division! No Aces.
The Rich Report: Eddie and I met up around 7:30pm on a beautiful night, although somewhat muggy. It was overall perfect for tennis. We warmed up for 15 minutes practicing some ground strokes and serves. Then we went into the match. In the 1st Set, I couldn't miss…even my backhand (not good, but much improved now with all my sessions with Edgar and company). Eddie had his usual monster serves and killer drop shots. Fortunately for me, Fast Eddie took a while to get into his usual groove. I ended dominating the 1st Set and then the first half of the 2nd Set. Then, the forever young "Fast Eddie", with his unnatural stamina, came roaring back as my batteries started to wear down. That carried over into the next One-Setter that we played.
Rich Liu tied with Edgar Valencia, 6-6 (0-0…Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
The Rich Report: He took a huge lead in this one and I had to battle back to even it at 6-6. It was exactly 6-6 (0-0) with Eddie serving the first point of the Tiebreaker when the lights went out. Next time, Eddie will surely take his revenge.

Samara's Notes: I thank Rich for his kind words and appreciate his timely reporting. I also congratulate him on an impressive victory as I'm sure he must have been itching to make the jump into the Advanced Division as many in his "Nutley crew" (perhaps that is somewhat inaccurate as much of their action has emanated from Brookdale Park in Bloomfield as of late) have recently done the same. Also, kudos to Edgar who always seems to be up for a challenge!
