5/30/18:
"Dan-Edgar + 2 in BP, 8 play in Nutley, Scott-Jordan part of 16 at C.G.!":
There were three sessions of GTA Wednesday Night Tennis: a late afternoon/early evening one at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield that started with a "Battle of The Sexes" One-Setter between "The Mel Man" Melvin Hyman and "Energetic" Nina Kallay (as Mel responded to her Open Challenge...he also reported) and then led to a Challenge Match between "The Dark Knight" Dan Knitzer and "Effortless" Edgar Valencia which they actually started last Friday night in Brookdale, so this was the conclusion of that (with both reporting); then there was somewhat of an impromptu and twofold session at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley which came together with "SWAT" Rich Liu hosting one half and "The S Bomber" Genalin Capan hosting the other half (with both reporting, obviously); and then there was the third session...the usual evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts with a full Challenge Match between "Ice Berg" Scott Bergenfeld and "The Bulgarian Bull" Jordan Bachvaroff (with Scott reporting...and he provided other scores as well) with additional results being reported by "Dominant" Dawn Peterson, "The Webmaster" Senthil Kumar and the GTA Champion: "King Crush" Chris Chiaro.
Let's first get the One-Setter from Mel and then the Challenge Match result from both Dan and Edgar in Brookdale Park, then the Doubles action from Nutley (recapped by Rich and Gen) before getting all of the Cedar Grove results (starting with the Challenge Match between Scott and Jordan).
The Brookdale Park Results:
Melvin Hyman over Nina Kallay, 6-4! No Aces.
The Mel Man delivers: Nina is tough! I was lucky to emerge with the "W!"
Samara's Notes: I thank Mel for his timely reporting. We now go to the dual report from Dan and Edgar.
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Edgar Valencia over Dan Knitzer, 6-4, 6-1, to become both the New # 23 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division and the New # 7 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division! Edgar: 3 Aces!
The TDK Replay: I began a Challenge Match with Effortless Edgar last Friday at Brookdale, but I had to leave midway through the 2nd Set. So, tonight we finished it in the same place. Besides those three big Aces he had on me, Edgar did a great job getting to the net to handle my not-sneaky-enough drop shots!
Edgar's Editorial: It was a "Battle of The Ages!" This was a continuation from the match we started last Friday at Brookdale which began as a One-Setter, but Dan wanted to make it into a full Challenge Match. So, it was the boyish-looking Boston Celtics' coach look-alike Dark Knight against me, the aging Steph Curry wannabe! Coming into this night, Dan wanted to get even for the way things went last week. He was full of energy when he arrived. Almost every game went to Deuce and most points were finished with winners. He has some good spin serves and out of this world crazy drop shots! A lot of times they were successful, but I surprised him a few times with my 62 year old legs and excess belly fat as I came in and scooped them up at the last second as if making a basketball lay-up! I had tons of unforced errors, but it was my big serves time and again combined with my power forehand shots that had the young man shaking his head in disbelief which led to me getting the "W!"
Edgar Valencia over Dan Knitzer, 6-4! Edgar: 4 Aces!
The TDK Replay: We decided to play a One-Setter and it was as if he had to prove a point further...and he had an amazing four Aces in just one set!
Edgar's Editorial: Kudos to the very athletic Dan for some well-fought games!
Samara's Notes: I thank both for their timely reporting and congratulate Edgar on an impressive victory (and also in the One-Setter). I also appreciate the colorful commentary from both of them.
We now go to Nutley, starting with the recap from Rich and then the report from Gen.
The Park Ave. Courts Results:
Randy Doran/Rich Liu over Arthur Fontanilla/Fausto Murg, 6-2! No Aces.
The Rich Recap: Arthur was hitting hard and Fausto was extra-competitive, but Randy and I came through in the clutch to make sure to complete the win after having leads of 4-0 and 5-1 before it went to 5-2. After that, we had some Singles hitting session without any official scoring.
Samara's Notes: I thank Rich for his timely reporting. And we now turn it over to Gen.
Dean Delgado and I met up at the Park Ave. Courts at 7pm. It has been a good while since Dean and I played tennis together. We hit for about thirty minutes. Then, Dean invited the couple on the next court to play Mixed Doubles with us. That couple turned out to be Chris Barbieri and Andrea Lim. They have played in our league at The Cedar Grove Courts in the past. We ended up having a fun time. Rich Liu and his crew were also present.
2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Doubles Match:
Dean Delgado/Genalin Capan over Chris Barbieri/Andrea Lim, 6-2, 6-2, as both teams entered the Mixed Doubles Division as the New # 61 and # 62 Ranked Teams respectively! No Aces. It was the official GTA Return of Andrea Lim. We played this match from 7:50 to 8:45.
Samara's Notes: I also thank Gen for her very timely reporting along with the additional details.
We now go to Cedar Grove for all the scores...first the Challenge Match as reported by Scott (and then he has some other results as well), then Dawn, Senthil and we will end the report with scores from The Champ.
The Cedar Grove Results:
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Scott Bergenfeld over Jordan Bachvaroff, 6-2, 6-1, to successfully defend his # 8 Rank in the Advanced Division! No Aces.
The Skinny from Scott: Jordan was off of his game on this night. He could not put the shots away when he needed to in order to hit winners. Still, it was a good workout. We then decided to play an additional One-Setter.
Scott Bergenfeld over Jordan Bachvaroff, 6-1! No Aces.
The Skinny from Scott: He moved me more in this one, yet still couldn't put away the shots when necessary. It was good exercise as we definitely worked up a solid sweat.
Scott Bergenfeld/Jordan Bachvaroff over Jose Gonzales/Laura Gawley, 7-6 (9-7)! Jose: 1 Ace on Jordan; and Laura: 1 Ace on Jordan!
The Skinny from Scott: This is one of the most competitive sets that I've been a part of since joining the GTA quite a few seasons ago. Jordan and I were both fatigued and it worsened as the set progressed. We were up 4-1, but then they battled back to take a 5-4 lead! We tied it 5-5. Down 5-6, I was on serve and they had two Break/Match Points against us, but we saved them both to level it at 6-6 to force the Tiebreak! In the TB, they went up 6-2 and had four more Match Points. We broke them twice and then held twice to even things up once again (another 4 M.P.'s saved for a total of six so far)! They went up 7-6 and had yet another Match Point (their 7th now) and chance to put it away, but we made it 7-Up! We then took two more points to get the 9-7 win! I was completely gassed and Jordan was coughing up a lung, but it was a great set!
Samara's Notes: I thank Scott for his timely and detailed reporting. That last One-Setter sounds like a definite Nominee for One-Set Specialty Doubles Match of The Year at season's end. In fact, it may take the prize entirely!
2 out of 3 Sets Women's Doubles Match:
Laura Gawley/Dawn Peterson over Kathy Sheldon/Laurie Boughton, 6-2, 6-2, to become the New # 16 Ranked Team in the Women's Doubles Division! No Aces.
2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Gender Doubles Match:
Senthil Kumar/Janice Wang over Joe Rodrigues/Nick Inciong, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4! Under the TMT Rules, Kumar/Wang enters the Mixed Doubles Division as the New # 63 Ranked Team while Rodrigues/Inciong enters the Doubles Division as the New # 178 Ranked Team. No Aces.
The Untangled Web by Senthil: The 1st Set went 3-3, 5-3 in our favor, then 5-5 and 5-6 in their favor before we forced the Tiebreak. The 2nd Set went 3-1 in our favor, then 3-3 before we went up 5-3. They got one more to make it 5-4 before we closed out the set and match! Janice was the MVP as she played the best baseline and also had the best net game!
Samara's Notes: That one sounds like it could be a possible Nominee for Specialty Doubles Match of The Year at season's end. Thanks to Senthil for his timely reporting and precise details on the scoring.
Chris Chiaro/John Rizzo over Nick Caputo/Janice Wang, 6-2! No Aces.
Chris Chiaro/Adam Pienciak over Ryan Pienciak/Nick Caputo, 7-6 (8-6)! No Aces.
Ryan Pienciak/Nick Caputo over Chris Chiaro/Adam Pienciak, 6-3! Nick: 1 Ace on Adam; and Chris: 1 Ace on Ryan!
Ryan Pienciak/Nick Caputo leading Chris Chiaro/Adam Pienciak, 4-1 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: I thank Chris and everyone else (again) for sending these results in a very timely fashion. As always, it is greatly appreciated!
All the best,
Frank Samara
