GTA Memorial Day Monday Tennis only took place at The Cedar Grove Courts in the evening (featuring the GTA Women’s Championship Tournament Round of 16 Match between “The Amazing” Mindy Zhang and Natalia “Nitro” Sout).
Early morning rains killed the chance of any morning session at Robin Hood Park (besides, “Hollywood” Frank Samara had said he would be unavailable anyway).
“Papa K” Kris Srinivasan said he was out and came back home late. He saw “The Pilot” Greg Swierczek, “Kevlar” Kevin Doyle and “Bravo” Brenda Jordan there, so he thought there may be some official action. But as none of them reported any scores, it will have to remain as unofficial.
Mindy, however, did report the result of her match with Natalia.
The Cedar Grove Result:
GTA Women’s Championship Tournament Round of 16 Match:
Mindy Zhang over Natalia Sout, 6-3, 6-2, to successfully defend her # 14 Rank in the Women’s Division while also advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Women’s Championship Tournament! In the process, Sout entered the division as the New # 17 Ranked Player. No Aces (apparently).
The Skinny: This match-up came about during a whirlwind of behind the scenes attempts at scheduling. There were two Round of 16 Matches left to be played. On one side of the draw, it was supposed to be Zhang facing “Dominant” Dawn Peterson. And on the other side of the draw, it would have been Sout going against “C.A.T.” Christine Toth.
Both of these pairings were having a very hard time finding a mutually convenient time to play one another. So early Monday morning, the idea was floated to all four players to mix up the match-ups if it helped get things done. Mindy let it be known that she was available and Natalia answered the call. That now leaves Christine and Dawn to face each other in the last Round of 16 Match.
The Consequences: Zhang advances to face “The Excellent” Evonne Tan in the Quarters. This will be a rematch as they faced one another in the match where both became qualified for competition in this tourney. The winner of Toth-Peterson will advance to face “The S Bomber” Genalin Capan.
Samara’s Notes: I thank Mindy for sending in that score in a very timely fashion. I’m also happy to see Natalia finally make the jump to the Women’s Division.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
