GTA Monday Night Tennis surprisingly took place at The Cedar Grove Courts (hosted by "Papa K" Kris Srinivasan) as a day full of light rain gave way in the late afternoon to sunny skies.
It seemed to be too late for the courts at Robin Hood Park to recover (i.e. dry up in time) as "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli did a drive-by and saw nobody present there, but by the time the usual C.G. session could take place…the courts were ready to go.
We will now go to the report from Kris along with additional scores sent in by his wife, "The Marathon Woman" Doinks Srinivasan, "Dominant" Dawn Peterson and "Bravo" Brenda Jordan. In fact, we will share the results sent by the ladies first.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Brenda Jordan/Dawn Peterson over Jay Phoenix/Kevin Doyle, 6-4! No Aces (apparently).
Doinks Srinivasan/Dawn Peterson over Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan, 6-3! No Aces (apparently).
Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan over Doinks Srinivasan/Dawn Peterson, 6-2! No Aces (apparently).
Jose Gonzales/Doinks Srinivasan over Rob Gawley/Natalia Sout, 6-1! No Aces (apparently).
And now we will let Papa K take it away!
There was some brisk and exciting tennis Monday night with a reasonable turnout of players. The first to be seen out on the courts was a Doubles One-Setter between Jay Phoenix and Kevin Doyle against Brenda and Dawn. The Battle of the Sexes looked quite competitive, with great response by the women to some of Jay's attacking shots.
Then they switched the teams subsequently between Jay and Dawn against the familiar Brenda and Kevin combo.
Chris Chiaro/Kris Srinivasan over Tito Castolo/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-2! No Aces.
This was the first set we played and certainly the score is deceptive as both Tito and Doinks made it close in most games and possibly missed out on a game or two.
Doinks got to team up with Dawn thereafter to play against Brenda and Kevin. It was one set apiece (these were already listed above). Then, they played Mixed Doubles (which is now here below).
Jay Phoenix/Dawn Peterson over Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan, 6-4! No Aces (apparently).
2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
Chris Chiaro/Lou La Forgia over Kris Srinivasan/Tito Castolo, 6-4, 7-5, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 27 and # 28 Ranked Teams respectively! No Aces.
This was an incredible match that was exciting, aggressive and fast-paced. Lou was brilliant with his smoking overhead volleys, attacking shots, deft touch and great net play. Chris was his usual bristling self, but some of his gets were so incredible that it was insane! Tito played his crafty game and the best part was for me to go in tandem with Tito to play aggressively at the net. There were a few unforced errors from Chris and Lou, but there were quite a few forced errors that were satisfying. If I had executed my technical skills along with tactical skills, the outcome would have been an enhanced performance.
In the 2nd Set, we went on a roll taking the first three games, but Lou had a great hold after another hotly contested game. It was a great "sneaky peaky" progress by Chris and Lou as they took the next four games with some stunning "hokey pokey" shots. None of the games were one-sided and there were a fistful of fights on many points. Unfortunately, we couldn't take the game to a Tiebreaker. Still, it was a very enjoyable, competitive and aggressive match that indeed Chris and Lou deserved to win.
Chris Chiaro/Lou La Forgia leading Kris Srinivasan/Tito Castolo, 5-2 (Incomplete, when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
We played some more in the 19 minutes left. We were rushing a bit too much which saw Chris and Lou sitting on 2 Match Points only for them to blow, and to top it, we won the game to keep it at a some what respectable score of 5-2 in favor of Chris and Lou as we were saved by the lights calling it a day.
This Doubles Match was exciting with aggressive and classy play by Lou, Tito and Chris, and I was thrilled at our tactical play. Cheers!
Samara's Notes: As always, I thank Kris for being the host with the most up at Cedar Grove and providing us with his very comprehensive reports.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
