7/19 Results.

7/19/17:

"Cup WD, 2 play at NTC, Kris hosts 20 at C.G.!":

GTA Wednesday Night Tennis took place at two locations: Nutley Tennis Club (hosted by "The Riz" John Rizzo as he faced off against "Magic" Mike Mole in a couple of Singles One-Setters) and The Cedar Grove Courts (hosted by "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan).

But the biggest news of the day took place earlier and off the courts as "Double R" Rob Ryan sent an e-mail to his would-be opponent in the Grove Cup XX Round of 41, "Ragin" Rajan Shah (with a copy to "Hollywood" Frank Samara), as he announced he would have to withdraw from the tournament due to some ongoing ailments coupled with work commitments before he goes away on vacation.  He just has way too much on his plate to schedule this match in a timely fashion.

As a result, Shah will receive a bye into the Round of 32 where he will face "The AM Rush" Anish Mehta.  The withdrawal is not considered to be the forfeiture of the match and therefore he does not acquire the Advanced Division rank of Mr. Ryan.

So we will first go to John for the scores from NTC and then we will turn this report over to Kris.

The NTC Results:

John Rizzo over Mike Mole, 7-6 (7-3)!  No Aces.

Mike Mole over John Rizzo, 6-4!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: I thank John for reporting those scores in such a timely fashion.  We now turn the rest of this report over to Kris.

It was an eerie start as the courts looked empty with very little life at 7:30pm.  It was only Don Moya and Janice Wang engaging in practice drills.  Only Jordan Bachvaroff was out looking to play.  Just as I entered the courts, Taylor and his partner were done on Court 1 and leaving.

Samara's Notes: Not sure who "Taylor" is as I don't think Kris is referring to Raj Tailor.  In any event, we once again go back to Kris.

So it would start off as a mild hitting the balls session that morphed into full-fledged matches over the rest of the night on all the courts.  Yes, it was all GTA, back to its dominant self.  The previous night, we saw two courts taken by kids out of college, a few from Cedar Grove, getting together for a tennis session.  I was OK with it as they got to enjoy playing tennis, apparently after a while and I can understand their lingering session.

There were some interesting and close matches that were exciting.  It was my first time to see Ryan Pienciak's brother, Adam.  He was explosive in his serves and ground-strokes.  Nick Inciong almost single-handedly manhandled his opponents.  Ralph Bernard was solid and consistent.  It looked like Lou La Forgia and Laura Gawley did superbly well in tandem.

The Doubles action involving Nathan Fernandes, T.J. Shah, Rajan Shah and Tito Castolo looked intense and dramatic, especially their second One-Setter.  Janice had a good night with Don feeling solid in one of the sets.  Jordan had his moments, but not his best stuff.  Dave Zhu and Levy Lorenzo hardly settled down with the opposition unsettling them time and again.

All in all, it turned to be a great night of GTA Tennis on a muggy evening that was hot in the beginning but started to cool down nicely.  Cheers!

The Cedar Grove Results:

Lou La Forgia/Laura Gawley over Don Moya/Janice Wang, 6-4!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Ryan Pienciak over Adam Pienciak/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-2!  No Aces.

2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:

Nick Inciong/Andrew Kroessler over Jordan Bachvaroff/Ralph Bernard, 6-4, 6-2, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 60 and # 61 Ranked Teams respectively!  No Aces.

Don Moya/Janice Wang over Dan Hwang/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-2!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: It is good to see Dan Hwang back in action after a recent injury.  It is the reason why he did not enter the Grove Cup XX Tournament.  Once again, we go back to Kris.

Nathan Fernandes/T.J. Shah over Rajan Shah/Tito Castolo, 6-4!  No Aces.

Rajan Shah/Tito Castolo over Nathan Fernandes/T.J. Shah, 7-6 (7-4)!  No Aces.

Ryan Pienciak/Adam Pienciak over Lou La Forgia/Laura Gawley, 6-4!  No Aces.

Lou La Forgia/Ryan Pienciak over Jordan Bachvaroff/Andrew Kroessler, 6-1!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Nick Inciong over Levy Lorenzo/Dave Zhu, 6-2!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Nick Inciong leading Levy Lorenzo/Dave Zhu, 3-1 (Incomplete when the lights went off at 10pm)!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: I thank Kris for hosting and providing us with this report.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
