7/17 Results.

7/17/17:

"Riz hosts 4 at NTC, Kris hosts 23 at C.G. incl. Jay-Edwin TBC and M2 Qtr.!":

GTA Monday Night Tennis took place at two locations: Nutley Tennis Club (hosted by "The Riz" John Rizzo) and The Cedar Grove Courts (hosted by "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan) with the Double Main Event being the Grove Cup XX Round of 32 Match between Jay "The Rising" Phoenix and "Salsa Picante" Edwin Ortega and then the M2 Men's Doubles Tournament Quarterfinal Match between the teams of "Ragin" Rajan Shah/"Teej" T.J. Shah and William "Bombs Away" Bobila/Fred "Supa Dupa" Suba (with William providing additional commentary).

So we will first go to NTC for The Riz Report and then we will turn this entire report over to Kris with some additional commentary from William along the way.

The NTC Results:

Dennis Cabanatan/Tom La over Anish Mehta/John Rizzo, 6-4!  No Aces.

Anish Mehta/John Rizzo leading Dennis Cabanatan/Tom La, 4-2 (Incomplete when Anish had to leave)!  No Aces.

The Riz Report: Tom and Dennis wanted to get some practice in before their upcoming M2 Quarterfinal Match.  I wish them luck.  And, if they play their best, they won't need it!

Samara's Notes: Thanks to John for reporting these scores in such a timely manner.  We now head up to Cedar Grove to let The K take it away!

It turned out to be a great night of non-stop GTA Tennis on all the courts despite the ominous and dark clouds with gusty winds around 7pm.  It looked almost certain that the courts would get completely drenched as the dark clouds seemed to be in no rush to move.  It was good the dark clouds didn't watch our matches too long.

With the skies getting brighter along the way, we got to play out the night with no interruptions except for a couple of rain drops.  Marijus Kuzavas was the star of the night, serving superbly, attacking at the net and swinging freely.  He was ably supported by Jorge Solano in their match against Chris Chiaro and Lou La Forgia.  I believe he played with Sally Pillay first against Chris and Jorge?

Samara's Notes: Yes, that is correct.  Chris submitted that result directly (along with the scores of all the other matches he was involved in…one of them revising the score that was submitted by Kris), so I will add it to this report right after Phoenix-Ortega.  I now turn it back over to Kris.

The evening kicked off with the Grove Cup Round of 32 Match between Jay and Edwin which started around 5pm and lasted until 6:30 (where it was cut short).  We also got the M2 Men's Doubles Quarterfinal Match which was completed despite the dark clouds.  It turned to be a well-contested match that went to the 3rd Set for the decisive result.  Ryan Pienciak and his younger brother Adam had a great night overall and displayed great shots and chemistry.

Brenda Jordan and Kevin Doyle played well in all their matches.  Sally was great in her serves and attacking shots despite some misses.  Both my wife Doinks and Dawn Peterson had a terrific 1st Set against the wily Tito Castolo and the boisterous Laurie Boughton.  Mike Mole and Jordan Bachvaroff played a Singles One-Setter that was even until the last game.

All in all, it was superb GTA action here at Cedar Grove.  Cheers!

The Cedar Grove Results:

Grove Cup XX Round of 32 Match:

Edwin Ortega tied with Jay Phoenix, 6-4, 6-7 (7-4), with the 3rd Set to be played on Tuesday night.

The K has his say: They had originally planned to wrap up the match at 6:30.  So they will play the deciding set the afternoon or evening of Tues.

Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay over Chris Chiaro/Jorge Solano, 6-2!  Sally: 1 Ace on Jorge!

M2 Quarterfinal Match:

William Bobila/Fred Suba over Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, to become the New # 14 Ranked Team in the Doubles Division while also advancing to the Semifinals of the M2 Men's Doubles Tournament!  William: 3 Aces (2 on Rajan and 1 on T.J.); Rajan: 2 Aces on Fred; and Fred: 1 Ace on Rajan!

The Word from William: The match started at 6:30 and it lasted until 8:15.  It was a very competitive three-setter.  We thought we would not complete the match because it was so dark.  Eventually, the weather did cooperate and we finished the match.

Bobila/Suba managed to control the 1st Set, but in the 2nd Set it was Shah/Shah that dictated the action to take the 2nd Set convincingly.  At the start of the 3rd Set, Suba's service was broken.  Shah/Shah took a 1-0 lead, but Bobila/Suba was able to break back and win the next six games to finish the match!

Samara's Notes: I thank William for providing that commentary and submitting it in such a timely manner.  We now go back to Kris.

Kris Srinivasan/Dawn Peterson over Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan, 7-6 (7-2)!  No Aces.

Marijus Kuzavas/Jorge Solano over Chris Chiaro/Lou La Forgia, 7-5!  No Aces.

Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah over Kris Srinivasan/Kevin Doyle, 6-4!  No Aces.

Chris Chiaro/Lou La Forgia over Jordan Bachvaroff/Jorge Solano, 6-4!  No Aces.

Guy Dupoux/Brenda Jordan over Cliff Pierre-Louis/Sally Pillay, 6-2!  No Aces.

Jordan Bachvaroff over Mike Mole, 6-4!  No Aces.

Ryan Pienciak/Adam Pienciak over Jordan Bachvaroff/Mike Mole, 7-5!  No Aces.

Ryan Pienciak/Adam Pienciak over Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah, 6-2!  No Aces.

Chris Chiaro/Lou La Forgia over Ryan Pienciak/Adam Pienciak, 6-4!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Brenda Jordan over Kevin Doyle/Sally Pillay, 6-4!  Sally: 1 Ace on Kris!

2 out of 3 Sets:

Tito Castolo/Laurie Boughton over Doinks Srinivasan/Dawn Peterson, 7-5, 6-3!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Sally Pillay leading Guy Dupoux/Cliff Pierre-Louis, 5-0 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: As always, I thank Kris for hosting and all he does to promote GTA Tennis up at Cedar Grove.  I also again thank William and Chris for their contributions to this report.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
