9/12 Results.

9/12/17:

"MXD2 Final/New Champs part of 22 at C.G.!":

There was just one session of GTA Tuesday Night Tennis at The Cedar Grove Courts and much like the Monday night session the night before…it featured multiple "hosts" (i.e. results reporters) as scores and details were sent in from GTA Women's Champion: Laura "The Aura" Gawley, "Super Mario" Marijus Kuzavas, GTA Champion: "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes, "The S Bomber" Genalin Capan, "The Webmaster" Senthil Kumar and "The Lumberjack" Ryan Pienciak.

Kuzavas and Fernandes each reported the details of their MXD2 Mixed Doubles Tournament Final Match where Marijus teamed with his wife, "The Smackdown" Sally Pillay, while Nate was paired with Natalia "Nitro" Sout.  That was the Main Event of the evening.

Also, per their return to the Tuesday night scene at Cedar Grove, The Pickle Ballers dominated all four courts until 7:30 (and, unfortunately, that is the way it will be going forward as this new trend seems to be infecting tennis courts in other areas as well).  But once they all cleared out, it was GTA time!

Let's get to the scores!

The Cedar Grove Results:

Moka Pathan/Laura Gawley over Joe Rodrigues/Frank Hohorst, 6-2!  Frank: 2 Aces on Laura!

MXD2 Final Match:

Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay over Nathan Fernandes/Natalia Sout, 6-2, 7-5, to become the 2017 MXD2 Champs and the New GTA Mixed Doubles Champions!  Marijus: 1 Ace on Nate.

The Super Mario Memo: The flow of the games in the 1st Set went 1-0, 4-1 and 6-2.  In the 2nd Set, it then went 1-0, 4-2 and 7-5.  Nate and Natalia gave us a good fight and a bit of a scare in the 2nd Set when they took 3 games in a row from 2-4 to 5-4 and Nate was serving for the set.  We had to regroup and luckily we prevailed.  Nate was his usual self playing great all over the court, thus we were directing most of the balls to Natalia.  In the 1st Set, she was probably a bit nervous…giving too many easy balls up to the net player.  But in the 2nd Set she settled down and was directing the ball much better and she hit some great passing shots.  It was a fun match.

Nate's Notes: Sally and Marijus are a really great team and are the deserving winners.  Marijus' heavy ground-strokes coupled with Sally's intelligent placements posed a challenge that Natalia and I couldn't overcome on the night.  For her part, Natalia played great with well-placed lobs, beautiful passing shots, and sublime cross-court winners.  Congrats Sally and Marijus - you guys deserve that # 1 by your names!

The Consequences: As the New GTA Mixed Doubles Champions, Marijus and Sally are now the New # 1 Ranked Team in the Mixed Doubles Division as well.  Their next challenge will come from most recent Former GTA Mixed Doubles Champ, Tito "Touch" Castolo.  It is up to him if he will reunite with his former partner, "Dominant" Dawn Peterson, for that match.

Jose Gonzales/Genalin Capan over Mike Sindler/Brenda Jordan, 6-2!  No Aces.

Gen's Notes: We played this one on Court 3 from 7:40 to 8:10.  Jose and I took a 4-0 lead, but then Mike and Brenda picked up their level of play and took the next two games for 2-4.  Then we got the next two games for the win.  It was a very nice One-Setter.

The Pickle Ballers were there and had all four courts until 7:30.  The Mixed Doubles Title Match was played on Court 4.  After my set, I stayed to watch it.  The 2nd Set was close.  Natalia handled herself well against some of the heavy shots from Marijus.

The Gawleys, Spin and Dino were watching from the first bench.  I was sitting with Brenda, Dawn and Dawn's friend Jim (plus her dog, Pumpkin) from the other bench.  Doinks arrived later and joined us.

Moka Pathan/Edwin Ortega over Senthil Kumar/Levy Lorenzo, 6-4!  No Aces.

2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:

Senthil Kumar/Levy Lorenzo over Kris Srinivasan/Edwin Ortega, 6-3, 6-2, to successfully defend their # 76 Rank in the Doubles Division!  In the process, Srinivasan/Ortega entered the Doubles Division as the New # 97 Ranked Team.  No Aces.

Senthil Kumar/Frank Hohorst over Kris Srinivasan/Edwin Ortega, 6-1!  No Aces.

3 out of 5 Sets Doubles Match:

Ryan Pienciak/Guy Dupoux over Anish Mehta/Arthur Fontanilla, 6-0, 6-4, 6-3, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 98 and # 99 Ranked Teams respectively!  No Aces.  The very last point was finished in the dark!

Samara's Notes: Once again, I thank everyone for their very timely contributions to this report.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
