6/17/17:
GTA Saturday Night Tennis took place at The Cedar Grove Courts with "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli acting as host as he grabbed the scores from "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan and then wrote up this report along with his additional commentary…even though he himself did not play.
So now in the words of Spin…
The "Flash Alert" e-mail/text from Kris not only got some of the GTA contingent up to Cedar Grove for some fast-paced, between-the-rain tennis action, it also saved a little critter's life. Around the time his e-mail hit the airwaves, I was seriously considering staying home. Pondering either to sit around at home or head up to Cedar Grove, I chose the latter.
So, I said my goodbyes and headed out the door. Much to my surprise, I found a small bird walking around on my sidewalk pecking for food. I am sure that Mr. Science (aka Mike Mole) could have been useful in this situation, but he was already up at Cedar Grove. A quick analysis of the winged wonder dictated that the little birdie was indeed a cockatiel.
Cockatiels are not an indigenous species in Northern NJ. We have cats in the neighborhood, so I had to act fast if this little creature was to survive. I met a little resistance when I picked him up and put him in a cat carrier. It was now off to Petco for bird food and instruction. To make a long story short, Animal Rescue picked him up and he is now safely residing at the Clifton Animal Shelter. P.S. - He ate like a pig when I got him the food.
I finally arrived at Cedar Grove around 8:45. A One-Setter was already in progress with Kris and T.J. Shah on one side and Mike and Jose Gonzales on the other. Now for the scores and commentary provided by Kris and some embellishment from yours truly.
Oh, but first…Kris wanted it pointed out that Natalia Sout was very instrumental on helping him in clearing the courts from the earlier rains. Both got a workout clearing the courts to allow play.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Mike Mole over Andrew Truong, 6-3! No Aces.
Kris Srinivasan/Sairaj Srinivasan over Andrew Truong/Natalia Sout, 6-4! No Aces.
Kris Srinivasan/Sairaj Srinivasan over Jose Gonzales/Natalia Sout, 6-2! No Aces.
The K has his say: It was two games in a row for each side starting with Kris and Sairaj. Sairaj held all his serves in both sets. He was brilliant with attacking shots and drop shots.
Mike Mole/Jose Gonzales over Kris Srinivasan/T.J. Shah, 7-5! T.J.: 1 Ace on Jose; and Mike: 1 Ace on Kris.
The K has his say: Kris and T.J. missed out on two Match Points to win it at 6-4, but instead they grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory. Jose played well and Mike performed solidly with his serves and topspin shots. Cheers!
The Spin from Spin: I saw a good deal of this set. It featured some great gets, crisp net play and some awfully hard hitting. Since pace was so abundant, unforced errors crept in…but the quality of play was astounding. Afterwards, Kris and I chatted until 10pm as Spin told his tall tale…bird-saving story.
Samara's Notes: I thank Spin for providing us with his colorful and comprehensive report. Kudos to the Bird Whisperer!
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
