6/1/17:
There was GTA Thursday Night Tennis at The Cedar Grove Courts (co-hosted by "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli and "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan…and it should be noted that "The S Bomber" Genalin Capan also sent her results directly to both Kris and "Hollywood" Frank Samara…Kris incorporated it into his report).
We will first get the early recap from Spin and then the balance of this report will come from Kris.
I arrived early on this evening, but it was to talk finances and not play.
Samara's Notes: Watch out! The Wizard of Wall Street has arrived! Sorry, but I couldn't resist. I turn it back over to Spin.
When I arrived, Jordan Bachvaroff and Kevin Doyle were already there. Nathan Fernandes arrived and started a hitting session with Kevin and Jordan. Kris arrived moments later and we hit until a fourth player could come forward. Kevin had to leave for a brief moment in time. Brian Barbera arrived around 7:15 and he and I chatted.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Senthil Kumar/Omar Santos over Dan Martinelli/Brian Barbera, 6-3! Brian: 1 Ace on Omar; and Senthil: 1 Ace on Spin!
The Spin from Spin:
Not sure when Brian played tennis last. It may have been in The Bubble before he dislocated his patella (knee cap), but he shook off the rust fast and had some great gets. Spin had his moments, but he turned out to be the weak link in this affair. Senthil and Omar were nearly flawless. They returned just about everything. All the games were close, but when it came time to secure a game it was S&O who came up big.
The K has his say: Spin would play a primary role as a "financial guru" for Brian and tennis was only an incidental afterthought. It was a great night for Senthil in teaming with Omar as they continued to stamp their authority throughout the night. It was also good to see Brian after such a long time.
Samara's Notes: Just to confirm Spin's suspicions, yes, it was at Bubblepalooza in March when we last saw Barbera on the courts. Back to Spin we go once more!
It was a great night. People started to shuffle in to enjoy the perfect weather and the GTA camaraderie. Tennis action stretched on through the night until the lights went out. Afterwards, about 8 of us chatted it up right until 10:50. On this night, no bonds were broken but many were made. It was really great stuff to finish a grand evening.
Samara's Notes: I thank Spin for his co-hosting duties and providing us with that report. We now go from the Bond Maker to the Match Maker also known as The K Man.
We had another night with a decent turnout that started early…which worked out well without creating a logjam. It was a beautiful night…perfect for GTA Tennis and it had some intense matches.
There is a good chance the results will be reported by various players. Here is what comes to my mind.
Nathan Fernandes/Chazz Weldon over Jordan Bachvaroff/Kevin Doyle, 6-0! No Aces.
It turned out to be one-sided with two of the most consistent players on one side. Kevin was consistent, too. It was an off-day for Jordan and that was the difference.
Nathan Fernandes/Chazz Weldon over Kris Srinivasan/Dave Zhu, 6-4! Dave: 2 Aces on Chazz!
Everyone held their serves until the last game which decided the match. We missed out on breaking Chazz's serve a few times. It proved to be a close affair. Dave's serves were top notch (the two Aces on Chazz), but unfortunately it was his serves that missed the target in the last game that did us in.
Nathan Fernandes/Joe Rodrigues over Kris Srinivasan/Dave Zhu, 6-4! No Aces.
Joe played some really meticulous shots and his gets were noteworthy. With a solid ally in Nate, he continued to put us under pressure. We did well, but not good enough to overpower our opposition.
Edwin Ortega/Janice Wang over Jordan Bachvaroff/Kevin Doyle, 7-5! No Aces.
It was one of the closest matches for the night which saw quite a few sparkles from Janice and Edwin. Kevin' consistent play along with Jordan's aggressive shots kept the match in balance.
2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
Senthil Kumar/Omar Santos over Jordan Bachvaroff/Dave Zhu, 6-1, 6-2, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 59 and # 60 Ranked Teams respectively! No Aces.
Consistency was the key for the emphatic result.
Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah over Ryan Pienciak/Doinks Srinivasan, 7-5! No Aces.
Doinks felt she didn't play well as it took her some time to get warmed up. Both T.J. and Rajan were solid. Ryan kept things close for his team.
Don Moya/Janice Wang over Edwin Ortega/Tito Castolo, 7-6 (7-4)! No Aces.
This is another dream team that does well in tandem. In fact, it would be great to have them in the Mixed Doubles Tournament. Well, Tito and Edwin were the ones who got hoodwinked at the end.
Tito Castolo/Doinks Srinivasan tied with Don Moya/Janice Wang, 3-3 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
It was close and an exciting match (partial) where all the players chipped in well.
Joe Rodrigues/Kris Srinivasan over Mike Mole/Genalin Capan, 6-4! Mike: 1 Ace on Kris!
Mike was the star with his lovely serves and topspin shots. It was also a double-edged swordsman letting down. But it was his amazing gets to some of our shots, running him side to side, that were incredible! Gen's net play is superb and she put away some winners as well as digging in to some hard shots. Joe was the "go-to person" for our side and his down-the-line shots were exquisite.
Joe Rodrigues/Kris Srinivasan leading Mike Mole/Genalin Capan, 5-1 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Given the short time before the lights go out, we just couldn't get our last point in on time to seal the deal!
All in all, it was a great night of GTA Tennis and the financial wizardry from Spin who shared his knowledge and experience to the chosen few. A big bull session then followed the tennis to cap the night. Cheers!
Samara's Notes: Please tell us more, Mr. Wizard of Wall Street! LOL! As always, I thank Kris for so often acting as the main host for the GTA up at Cedar Grove and providing us with these thoroughly entertaining and informative reports.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
