6/13/17:
"Mehta-Bachvaroff part of 21 (1 new) at C.G.!":
There was one epic session of GTA Tuesday Night Tennis at The Cedar Grove Courts with "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan acting as host and featuring an impromptu 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match between "The AM Rush" Anish Mehta and "The Bulgarian Bull" Jordan Bachvaroff…the result of which has now rocked the Advanced Division.
We now turn this report over to Kris (with a minor assist from "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli).
It was a sultry night which had very little effect on the enthusiasm of the players who wanted to play some GTA Tennis.
What a night it turned out to be for Jordan in his Singles Match against Anish. It indeed deserves to be the highlight of the night plus the entry of a new player, Sonata Servetkaite, brought in by Sally Pillay.
The Cedar Grove Results:
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Jordan Bachvaroff over Anish Mehta, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, to become the New # 2 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division! No Aces.
The K has his say: The match started when we had fewer players, but as more players showed up…they would end up waiting a bit. The 1st Set was a nail-biter and a very close affair. Anish was serving well and mixed up his aggressive shots well with his slices which were very effective. But Jordan, who relishes playing Singles, was able to muscle in his topspin forehand and he also did well to run when pushed. A tight loss, like this one in a Tiebreak in the 1st Set, inevitably has its effects. It was reflected in the 2nd Set, but still both players fought tooth and nail for every point.
Samara's Notes: Congratulations to Jordan on a very big win here! He is now the Top Contender to the GTA Championship held by "King Crush" Chris Chiaro. So Chiaro's next defense in the month of June should come against Jordan if they can put it together in time. Because once the Grove Cup Men's Singles Tournament starts sometime in July (likely to begin early in the month), the reigning GTA Champ at that time will then be asked to refrain from defending their Title until a new Top Contender emerges from that tourney.
We now turn it back over to Kris.
Dave Zhu/Doinks Srinivasan over Sairaj Srinivasan/Jay Srinivasan, 6-2! No Aces.
There were plenty of good attacking shots and some nice passing shots by Jay and a Sairaj, but it was their unforced errors that wreaked their chances of closing out the games.
Bob Fattal over Elias Khawam, 6-3! No Aces.
This match took place in the early stages. There were plenty of good shots and running to make it interesting.
Guy Dupoux/Cliff Pierre-Louis over Bob Fattal/Elias Khawam, 6-3! No Aces.
I wanted Bob to play with Cliff, but Bob and Elias seem to be another pair of "Inseparables", comfortable as a team. Cliff and Guy can play attacking shots, but they did get a good fight from Bob and Elias.
Dan Martinelli/Sally Pillay over Nathan Fernandes/Sonata Servetkaite, 6-4! Sally: 1 Ace on Nate (a great angled one to start things off); Spin: 1 Ace on Sonata; and Sonata: 1 Ace on Spin! It was the official GTA Debut of Sonata Servetkaite.
It was a good match that saw a newcomer in Sonata who had some nice returns of serves and ground-strokes. She is also learning to play more consistently. Spin was a charging bull, ready to attack at the first opportunity with Sally supporting him very well. Nate was pretty good in marshalling his resources very well, making it very competitive and close enough.
Samara's Notes: Spin's contribution to this report was the Ace count…which is very interesting. Now once again, we go back to Kris.
Levy Lorenzo/Ryan Pienciak over Kris Srinivasan/T.J. Shah, 6-4! No Aces.
It was a good match which we controlled well in the first half only to give it away after leading 4-2! Levy was brilliant with his gets and efforts. Ryan was solid at the net as he generally is. T.J. did splendidly well for us, but both of us fell short…especially the last two games.
Nathan Fernandes/Levy Lorenzo over Kris Srinivasan/Ryan Pienciak, 6-4! No Aces.
Levy, arriving this night in style in a Mustang, would display his horsepower in full force and he made a big impact. Nate is back with his magic touch. Ryan was good for us to keep the match in good balance.
Dave Zhu/Rob Gawley over Tito Castolo/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-2! No Aces.
Tito Castolo/Doinks Srinivasan over Dave Zhu/Rob Gawley, 6-2! No Aces.
Tito and Doinks redeemed themselves well as they upped their game and got a better handle on Rob's slices and dices.
Kris Srinivasan/Sally Pillay over Anish Mehta/Sonata Servetkaite, 6-2! Anish: 1 Ace on Kris!
Anish was nice to be the fourth player with Spin opting to sit out to chill and chat with Dino who made his grand appearance in the later part of the evening. It was good to play against Anish who was serving well and he uses his slices effectively. Sonata got to play one more set for the night and she will come a long way as she plays more with us. After a shaky start, Sally found her groove and there was a nice trading of net plays between her and Anish.
I got to hit a bit with Anish for 15 minutes or so before we round it up for the night. All in all, it was a good bit of action with Jordan stealing the limelight indeed! Cheers!
Samara's Notes: As always, I thank Kris for hosting GTA Tennis up at Cedar Grove and then following it all up with such a colorful and comprehensive report.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
