5/7/17:
"Samara hosts 21 (2 new) at AP, Kris hosts 4 at C.G.!":
This session of GTA Sunday Tennis at Albion Park in Clifton was particularly impressive when you consider the fact that it got up to 21 official competitors (which I do believe is the new GTA attendance record for Albion Park) within a timeframe of 10:40 (when the first official action got underway) and around 1:05 (when rain forced the session to shut down at least an hour earlier than usual).
It was 10:40 when both "Hollywood" Frank Samara and "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli pulled up to the courts separately. As they each got out of their cars, they were surprised to see all three courts full. But they were also relieved to see that all three of them belonged to the GTA.
On the North Court, "The WB" William Bobila was teaming with "The Vin Man" Vinnie De Benedetto to take on "The Hitman" Tom La and "The Smackdown" Sally Pillay. La, in fact, had reached out to Samara via text at 10:05 to say that there was nobody at the courts. So, from that, we know that Tom was the first arrival and also that the courts got full mighty quick!
On Center Court, "Big George" Jorge Solano was hitting with someone we had never seen before. It turns out Jorge met him at the courts earlier that morning. His name is Walden Dobias. As Jorge saw more and more players arriving at the courts, he invited two over for Doubles and Solano said he'd team with Dobias.
Since it was "Bee Gee" Brad Gero and "Sadistic" Syed Rashid both waiting on the bench alongside the North Court, Samara sent them over to Center Court to make it a foursome.
And on the South Court, it was "Super Mario" Marijus Kuzavas and "Big Kaz" Mike Kazlauskas having a hard-hitting sparring session with one another. They were also open to playing Doubles, but Hollywood and The Doc wanted to get their bearings first.
At 10:50, GTA Champion: "King Crush" Chris Chiaro made his way down to the courts. Like Samara and Martinelli, he also wanted a little time to wake up and take it all in before heading down to the South Court for some Doubles.
Five minutes later, "Instant" Moka Pathan also made his way toward the courts and he was soon followed in by "The Lumberjack" Ryan Pienciak. Spin made the suggestion that Chiaro and Pathan versus Kuzavas and Kazlauskas would be quite the Doubles match-up. Soon after, off went Chris and Moka to the South Court. As Spin speaks, shall it be done! LOL!
At 11am, "LP" Lena Pyatski made her arrival. She, too, had sent an earlier text to Samara just to see if there would still be a session as it was already raining in her area. At that time (10:15), the sun was emerging in the Clifton/Passaic area. But it would be a roller coaster ride of a day weather-wise. And we would soon find that the amusement park operated by Mother Nature was going to close early this day.
Back to Lena, she is a recruit sent to us via Sally. Once she had the chance to play, she proved to be a formidable competitor who has an impressive forehand and is also quite quick and comfortable executing volleys at the net.
And the arrivals continued as it was "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes strolling in at 11:05 and he was followed five minutes later by Tito "Touch" Castolo. Tito was wearing an Army-style camouflage vest. Later in the day, this led to the "Line of The Day" as Martinelli watched Castolo just finish making another one of his amazing gets. Spin then said: "Tito seems to be a bit fatigued!"
Actually, The Doc was in rare form this fine day (even by his lofty standards) and we will get to more of that a bit later.
Perhaps due to the logjam or the fact that he had been the first one in attendance, La left at 11:40. Early departures weren't the worst thing to happen (though they are unfortunate) as the arrivals kept coming.
At 11:50, Jay "The Rising" Phoenix made his way onto the courts. Ten minutes later, "Dominant" Dawn Peterson did the same. Both of them had first went to Robin Hood Park in Clifton (perhaps mistakenly). Jay, upon seeing the logjam, suggested some of the group going back to RHP...but he didn't have any takers.
Kazlauskas also decided to leave a bit early at 12noon. And Pillay said that she and her hubby Kazlauskas would have to do the same around 12:30 as both entered into their final One-Setters of the day.
"Mr. Science" Mike Mole was the final competitor (the 21st) to arrive at 12:35. Ten minutes later, "Coach" Dino Celis gamely limped down the hill for the first time without crutches since his knee surgery this past Tuesday.
As stated earlier, Mother Nature decided to end the session early around 1:05 with just enough rain to soak the courts and send everybody (well, almost everybody) home.
I say "almost" because from there it was Spin holding court in a bull session attended by Frank, Dino, Nate and Mike that ran all the way until 2:50! The hilarity and hi-jinx were non-stop and it was just like the good old days at RHP.
Midway through it after the rain had stopped and the courts had dried, Mole wanted to go back out onto the courts and hit. But much like Jay earlier in the day, he had no takers as the rest of the crew were content to just laugh their silly heads off as The Doc came up with one memorable (sometimes regrettable) statement after another.
I would try to recap it, but it was just one of those things where you had to be there.
Now, let's get to the scores!
The Albion Park Results:
William Bobila/Vinnie De Benedetto over Tom La/Sally Pillay, 6-2! No Aces. This one took place on the North Court and lasted from 10:40 to 11:02.
Jorge Solano/Walden Dobias over Brad Gero/Syed Rashid, 7-6 (7-0)! No Aces. It was the official GTA Debut of Walden Dobias. Although this was the second One-Setter of the day to get underway (on Center Court at 10:50), it was a marathon of a set! At 11:38, the score was just 4-3 (not sure who was up at that point). It reached 5-5 at 11:50. They entered into the Tiebreak at 11:59.
In the TB, Jorge and Walden jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Then came the changeover and Brad was on serve where he then hit a very anti-climactic Double Fault to end this one at 12:07! Yes, it was one hour and 17 minutes long! In fact, Syed wanted to play out the games "old school style" rather than use the Breaker! Thankfully, Solano saw the gathering crowd hungering for a court and strongly suggested the TB instead.
Walden seems like a very nice guy, but his accent is heavy (I am assuming he is Polish). He seems very interested in playing tennis with us again. He would like to play at Albion on weeknights at 6pm. I told him (not sure if he understood me) that I may start weeknight sessions at Albion in the summer. He did not provide any contact info (again, not sure if he understood my request...I was happy to just get a first and last name from him), but I hope we see him again. FYI - he is a white-haired man (likely to be in his late 50's or so) and I guess he stands about six feet tall.
Marijus Kuzavas/Mike Kazlauskas over Chris Chiaro/Moka Pathan, 6-2! Mike: 1 Ace on Moka. South Court hosted this one from 11:05 to 11:39. While the result itself may not be entirely shocking, the fairly lopsided score certainly is.
Frank Samara/Dan Martinelli over Ryan Pienciak/Lena Pyatski, 6-2! Spin: 2 Aces (one on each)! It was the official GTA Debut of Lena Pyatski. In order to save time, I did not note who hit what winners where and when (save a couple truly important moments), so here's the basic breakdown: Spin held serve (started with a near ace on Lena, then scored with a blistering sideline Ace against Ryan for 30-Love, it then went to Triple Game Point only to have it all get reduced to Deuce, Game Point, 2nd Deuce, a soft and short Ace against Lena for Game Point again and then came the hold), Ryan held (15-Love, 15-All and then onto Double Game Point and the hold), Frank held (30-Love, 30-15, Double Game Point cut down to Deuce, Break Point, 2nd Deuce, Game Point and the hold) and Lena held (15-Love, 15-All, Double Fault for 15-30 only to then shift to Game Point and the hold) as we were all on serve at 2-2. Martinelli held again (it shifted from Love-15 to 30-15 only to shift again to Break Point, but then it went to Deuce, Game Point and the hold), but Pienciak was the first to be broken (Love-15 shifted to 30-15 where the best rally of the match ended with the shot of the day as a previous get drove Spin way off the court and at the baseline between the North and Center Courts when Ryan hit one of his thunderous Overhead Smashes only to have it bounce on the court but then out wide to where Martinelli was and The Doc gathered himself to not only put it back in play but send it down the Doubles Alley for a raucous winner to make it 30-All and it then went to Break Point and the break) as his team fell to 2-4! Samara then held at Love and Pyatski was broken (15-Love then shifted to Double Break/Match Point where Frank blew what should have been just an easy and light volley over the net as he stuffed it into the net below the tape and then it was Break/Match Point where Frank tried to punish Ryan for poaching so he blasted a shot into him while he was at the net only to have Ryan hit a sick reflex volley that likely only hit the ball with the frame of the racquet and then sent the ball sideways to the sideline and then off the court to make it Deuce, but then came the 3rd Break/Match Point and the break) to take a tough loss! We played this one on the North Court from 11:05 to 11:37.
The Skinny: Spin started this one off as a man on fire as he blasted the first serve against Lena only to excitedly exclaim, "Welcome to the GTA!" He next fired off a true Ace against Ryan and then uttered the same phrase even louder! This got Ryan revved up for revenge while the contingent on the benches alongside the North Court grew contentious and turned against Martinelli with Pillay vociferously leading the cheers against him or offering up the jeers toward him. The man once known as Dan was like a man without a country! Even his own partner, Samara, continued to receive well-mannered accolades from the onlookers. But it seems this all played into the demented Doc's hands as he loves to be the COA (Center of Attention) even if it is in a negative manner as he ramped up his game while Ryan seemed rattled and was perhaps trying a bit too hard to find vengeance.
Tito Castolo/Sally Pillay over Nathan Fernandes/William Bobila, 6-2! No Aces. This one also took place on the North Court and it lasted from 11:40 to 12:08. While all played well in this contest, the man known as Tito Touch was in rare form with his wizardry as Kuzavas and Kazlauskas watched from the nearby bench and marveled at his excellence and finesse. I can't remember which one said it was as if he has the power to summon the ball to him and then make it do his will.
Dan Martinelli/Vinnie De Benedetto over Ryan Pienciak/Lena Pyatski, 7-5! Ryan: 2 Aces (one on each); and Lena: 1 Ace on Spin (which he confessed was quite an impressive one)! The South Court hosted this one from 11:43 to 122:23. Spin and Vin had leads of 3-1 and 4-2 only to then go down 4-5! Martinelli was on serve and facing Break/Match Point when his team managed to save it on the way to a hold of his service as that would be the first game of three in a row on their way to the finish line!
Chris Chiaro/Moka Pathan over Marijus Kuzavas/Jay Phoenix, 6-0! Jay: 1 Ace on Moka. It lasted exactly twenty minutes on Center Court (12:11 to 12:31)!
Tito Castolo/Sally Pillay over Nathan Fernandes/Dawn Peterson, 6-3! Nathan: 1 Ace on Sally when she twisted her ankle and fell to the ground. Thankfully, she was able to get up OK and return to action. This took place on the North Court from 12:12 to 12:40.
Jorge Solano/Syed Rashid over William Bobila/Lena Pyatski, 6-1! No Aces. The South Court hosted this one from 12:33 to 12:57. After this one, they started another only to scrap it after a couple of games when a light drizzle turned to a steady rain around 1:05.
Chris Chiaro/Moka Pathan over Jay Phoenix/Ryan Pienciak, 6-4! No Aces. They played this one on Center Court from 12:33 to 1:05.
Nathan Fernandes/Mike Mole over Tito Castolo/Dawn Peterson, 6-1! No Aces. This match-up on the North Court closed out the session as it lasted from 12:45 to 1:07. We wanted a chance to see the reigning GTA Mixed Doubles Champions (Castolo/Peterson) in action, but it did not last long...and thankfully so as if it went any longer, it would have to be incomplete due to the weather. So at least they got it in and got it done!
Once Mother Nature relented later in the day, there was a brief evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts where "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan acted as the host. So we now turn this report over to Kris.
A late shout-out from Senthil Kumar triggered some action, but just before that Omar Santos had also indicated an interest to play. I was out, but indicated my possible participation around 7:30pm. Omar was having a hitting session and they were joined by Senthil. I followed suit and the last to come was my wife Doinks who only got to hit the ball and play a "3 serve per each player" game.
The Cedar Grove Result:
Senthil Kumar/Omar Santos over Kris Srinivasan/Herb Reiner, 7-5! No Aces.
It was a close and competitive match. We were down Love-2 despite many chances to close both games. We did well to win the next two to tie the score. But we lost the next three games, unable to close two of those games. Omar had some terrific shots played to Herb, but were far away from his reach. A year ago, Herb would have easily gotten them. Senthil did attack me, but that was good for us. We dug in hard and had a nice comeback to keep the match in balance tied at 5-All. Missed opportunities and terrific plays by both Senthil and Omar earned a good win for their side. Herb was a happy man despite the result. He did splendidly well to all the shots thrown at him. He was still good to take on some fast-paced shots and also take some from the air.
Overall, it was a decent match for the night and as Omar had to drop off Herb, we ended up hitting a bit more for the rest of the night. Cheers!
Samara's Notes: As always, much gratitude to Kris for all he does for the GTA up at Cedar Grove.
Best wishes,
Frank Samara
