5/1/17:
"Mitra-Praport in Nutley, Spin hosts 20 at C.G.!":
There were two sessions of GTA Monday Night Tennis: one at the Demuro Courts in Nutley featuring what would have been a full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match between "The Chef" Sukumar Mitra and "The Speed Demon" Dan Praport (Dan gives the report as to why it was unable to happen) and then at The Cedar Grove Courts as "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli acted as the host with many others reporting their scores to him.
This is a good place to mention a glitch that happened with the Sunday report where Spin also should have received lead credit on hosting that session (along with an early assist from "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan).
I had given Spin the proper credit once I saw how that session unfolded. But something must now be wrong with my computer because it is used to auto-save as I went along the way (I try to save from time to time as well, but with the numerous interruptions...I sometimes forget).
Whenever I come into a report, I follow the template of a previous report to save time. I actually typed Spin's name in (along with Kris) during the opening paragraph and also when I made the transition from Clifton to Cedar Grove. I looked today...none of it is there!
The other day I completely lost a document (not tennis related) that I had spent at least half an hour working on when I did a "save as" at the end of it to start work on a new one. That never used to happen to me.
Anyway, I've made the adjustments and will attach the revised report to today's News e-mail later today along with the revised Rankings (I also had neglected to add Mark Grammer to the Non-Competing Men's Division).
OK, enough about my screw-ups. I first turn this report over to the Dan with the last name Praport and then to the Dan with the last name Martinelli (aka Spin and with an assist from "The S Bomber" Genalin Capan). If anything else is wrong, you can blame him! LOL!
The Demuro Results:
Dan Praport over Sukumar Mitra, 6-0! No Aces.
Dan Praport leading Sukumar Mitra, 3-0 (Incomplete when they ran out of sunlight)! No Aces.
The Praport Report: I met up with Kumar at the Demuro courts in Nutley at 7:25pm. We hit around a little and then played some sets. I won the 1st Set and in the 2nd set I was leading 3-0 when we decided it was too dark to play. We thought the lights were going to come on, but they never did. We left around 8:20pm. It was good seeing Kumar and playing with him again.
I ended up driving past the Park Ave courts in Nutley afterwards and the lights were on there, so this morning I called the Township of Nutley to find out why they did not come on at Demuro. They said they should have and will make sure it is corrected by tonight. It would be nice to have some more GTA action in Nutley as we did in the past.
Samara's Notes: I thank Dan for his thorough and timely report. And I agree with him that Nutley should be considered as another late-night option as they have two lit locations (a total of eight courts, four each) as the Cedar Grove scene continues to grow more crowded.
And now we go to the man simply known as Spin!
It was a stunning night for GTA Tennis. The gathered crowd told the story. When I arrived at 8:30, all four courts were cranking out results with 16 GTA combatants waging battle. Laurie was sitting on the bench and we chatted while waiting to play. Laurie is a joy to talk to. The following scores were texted to me from various sources: Doinks, Kris, Laura and Gen.
The Cedar Grove Results:
2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Doubles Match:
Jorge Solano/Genalin Capan over Ralph Bernard/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-4, 6-4, as both teams entered the Mixed Doubles Division as the New # 46 and # 47 Ranked Teams respectively! It was also the official GTA Return of Ralph Bernard. Ralph: 3 Aces (2 on Gen in the 1st Set and 1 on Jorge in the 2nd Set); and Doinks: 1 Ace on Gen in the 1st Set!
Gen takes the pen: We played this one from 8:10 to 9:30. It was a competitive match with some great rallies. Ralph, who was called Rob all day, possesses a wicked forehand and a first serve. Jorge was a great partner. His play extended the points for some pretty impressive rallies. Doinks had some impressive gets and put away a few winners.
Samara's Notes: We thank Gen for her additional info. And now back to Spin we go.
2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
Nathan Fernandes/Joe Rodrigues over Edwin Ortega/Jordan Bachvaroff, 6-4, 6-2, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 55 and # 56 Ranked Teams respectively! Jordan: 2 Aces on Nate!
2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
Chris Chiaro/Kris Srinivasan over Jay Phoenix/Jose Gonzales, 6-0, 6-2, to successfully defend their # 24 Rank in the Doubles Division! In the process, Phoenix/Gonzales entered the division as the New # 57 Ranked Team. No Aces.
Chris Chiaro/Kris Srinivasan over Joe Rodrigues/Jordan Bachvaroff, 6-3! No Aces.
Lou La Forgia/Tom La over Chris Chiaro/Kris Srinivasan, 6-3! No Aces.
Chris Chiaro/Lou La Forgia over Nathan Fernandes/Kris Srinivasan, 6-2! Chris: 1 Ace on Kris.
Jose Gonzales/Tito Castolo over Rob Gawley/Laura Gawley, 6-4! No Aces (apparently).
Jordan Bachvaroff/Tito Castolo over Rob Gawley/Laura Gawley, 6-3! No Aces (apparently).
Nathan Fernandes/Dan Martinelli over Dennis Cabanatan/Laurie Boughton, 7-5! No Aces.
The Spin from Spin: Laurie is not only a joy to talk to, she is a joy on the court as well. The four of us were by the far the most vocal and we all had a great time. I had a devil of a time trying to return Dennis's blistering serves. It was a fun set that went back and forth right until the end. Nate was his usual steady self with his inspiring net play and I actually had a good day at the service line. Dennis and Laurie were a blast to play against. This set could have gone either way.
Samara's Notes: Thanks to Spin for his second straight night of hosting and reporting from Cedar Grove.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
