7/5 Results.

7/5/18:

"MXD2 Qtr at BP, 10 play at C.G.!":

There were two official sessions of GTA Thursday Night Tennis:  one at the Brookdale Park Courts in Bloomfield hosted by "Hollywood" Frank Samara and featuring the last of the MXD2 Quarterfinals to be played as it was "Daddy O" Paul Daddio/"The Archetype" Arlene Hyde going up against "Del Brotro" Mike Mole/"The S Bomber" Genalin Capan (with Gen providing additional commentary and then some follow-up remarks from Arlene and Paul as well) and then a concurrent session at the Cedar Grove Courts with report contributions coming from "Bravo" Brenda Jordan and "NC-17" Nick Caputo!

We will start with the dual report from Bloomfield (beginning with my commentary and then the result and comments from Gen and follow-up remarks from Arlene and Paul) and then the dual recap from Cedar Grove.

I arrived at Brookdale Park around 7:10 with my children, Angie and Dante.  Heading toward the courts, I saw that Arlene Hyde was already there...but she wasn't with her partner, Paul Daddio.  Instead, it was a Teaching Pro from Tiger Tennis informing her (then me and everyone else) that they will now resume charging fees for playing at Brookdale Park.  Since a formal announcement had yet to be made, however, he was letting everyone have one more free night.

Arlene took Court Six while I took Court Five as my kids went over to Court Four to hit with each other.  Several other courts were taken as well (many by other children), but they never reached full capacity (perhaps peak usage was about seven or eight of the courts).  Paul arrived within five minutes of the rest of us and he started hitting with Arlene as they got warmed up for their match against Mike Mole/Genalin Capan (one of the MXD2 Quarterfinal Matches).

At 7:20, Mike and Gen arrived together.  The teams took sides and started warming up against each other.  At the same time, the Tiger Tennis Pro came out to hit with me until Dino Celis arrived five minutes later.  I never did get the name of "The Pro," but he seemed like a nice guy.  He said (when we arrived) that it is $5 per adult and $2 per child.  I don't know if that is an hourly rate or if you can have the court as long as you need it provided nobody else is waiting for it (I failed to ask him that).

This obviously means I will no longer be holding the Sunday sessions there, so it is back to Albion Park in Clifton we go!  But Brookdale may still have to be an option for the veritable plethora of Grove Cup Tournament matches on their way as there will be plenty to play.

Anyway, Gen has provided the notes on their match.  All I have to add is that Dino and I hit with one another for the entire time their match lasted (7:35 to 8:55).  When the match ended, we noticed that Fred Suba was sitting on the bench just outside the fence to Court Six (I don't know how long he was there).  His timing was unfortunate as Dino was off to head up to Cedar Grove, Paul and Arlene left promptly after the match had ended while Mike and Gen were exhausted and just chatted for a while before also heading for the hills.  So Fred soon left as well.

Meanwhile, the kids were still hungry for more tennis and they then hit with me on Court Five until 9:30 (despite the high humidity).  Angie is improving rapidly as she is very competitive and wants to get better at tennis, asap.  Dante's improvement is more gradual as his focus wavers (sometimes he wants to do well...other times he wants to be the court jester).

All in all, it was good fun.  I worked up a solid soak of a sweat (soak of the year, man!) hitting against Dino and then I continued that with the kids.  The points that I did get to witness in the MXD2 Quarter were quite entertaining as well.

We now turn this report over to Gen.

MXD2 Quarterfinal Match:

Paul Daddio/Arlene Hyde over Mike Mole/Genalin Capan, 6-4, 6-0, to successfully defend the # 3 Rank in the Mixed Doubles Division while also advancing to the Semifinals of the MXD2 Mixed Doubles Tournament!  No Aces.  Overall duration of the match was from 7:36 to 8:55.

Gen's Notes: In the 1st Set, we had the leads at 3-1, 4-2 and 4-3. I was serving up 4-3 and it ended up being a multi-Deuce battle (at least 10 Deuces!).  We ended up getting broken to level the set at 4-4.  From there, the momentum shifted in their favor to take the 1st Set. In the 2nd Set, despite the bagel it was still pretty intense.  There were longer rallies and most of them went in their favor.  I had another one of those multi-Deuce service games on my serve as well, so it was very exhausting…especially in this humidity.

The 1st Set started at 7:36 and ended at 8:22.  The 2nd Set started at 8:25 and it ended at 8:55.

Overall, we had a pretty good match last night at Brookdale.  Everyone played well and each had their moments of making impressive shots.  There were good get-making moments and nice rallies in the mix.  Mike and I just had a few more errors on our side.

Congratulations to Paul and Arlene for their impressive win!  We wish them well in rest of the tournament.  Mike and I would like a rematch with them after the tournament.

Arlene added: The score (especially for the 2nd Set) was not reflective of the games. There were some really great points.

Paul's point: Appreciate the kind words.  Hope to see you out on the courts again this summer.

Samara's Notes: I thank Gen for her timely and comprehensive reporting.  We now take it up to Cedar Grove.

The Cedar Grove Results:

Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan over Frank Hohorst/Robin Wilson, 6-3!  No Aces.

Janice Wang/Robin Wilson over Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan, 6-0!  No Aces.

Jonathan La/Janice Wang over Tom La/Brenda Jordan, 6-3!  No Aces.  It was the official GTA Return of Jonathan La.

Senthil Kumar/Frank Hohorst over Jordan Bachvaroff/Nick Caputo, 6-4!  No Aces.

Jordan Bachvaroff/Nick Caputo over Senthil Kumar/Tom La, 6-0!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: I thank Brenda and Nick for their very timely reporting.  It is truly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
