7/1/18:
"Agapito-Suba at Demuro, Nguyen-Corrado part of 8 at C.G.!":
There were two official sessions of GTA Sunday Tennis despite the late cancellation of the usual late morning one at the Brookdale Park Courts in Bloomfield hosted by "Hollywood" Frank Samara (the reason being was that it was too damn hot outside!).
Instead, there was an early morning one at the Demuro Park Courts in Nutley featuring a full Challenge Match between Elmer "The Glue" Agapito and Fred "Supa Dupa" Suba (as reported by Fred) as each player sought to get ranked and qualified for the upcoming Grove Cup 21 Men's Singles Tournament.
Then there was an evening session hosted by "The Riz" John Rizzo at the Cedar Grove Courts, but also featuring another full Challenge Match. This one was between "TNT" Tim Nguyen and "MC Smash" Mike Corrado (returning to the league) as Mike had heard about the Grove Cup and wanted to qualify in order to enter it.
So we will get that result from Tim along with another score and then the balance of the results from Cedar Grove from The Riz.
But before we do all that, we must first go to Fred's recap from Nutley.
The Demuro Park Result:
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Elmer Agapito over Fred Suba, 6-4, 6-4, as both players entered the Intermediate Division as the New # 52 and # 53 Ranked Players respectively! It was the official GTA Return of Fred Suba. No Aces.
Right Said Fred: We started at 8 in the morning and was finished at 9:20. Elmer played a flawless game of tennis.
Samara's Notes: I thank Fred for his timely reporting and welcome him back to the league. I also congratulate Elmer on an impressive victory. I suspect both of them may make an impact on the Grove Cup Tournament.
We now head west to Cedar Grove and first get the full match result from Tim before scoring the balance of the scores from John and the late additional score from Tim.
The Cedar Grove Results:
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Mike Corrado over Tim Nguyen, 6-2, 6-1, to become the New # 31 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division! It was the official GTA Return of Mike Corrado. No Aces.
Tim's Take: I had the chance to meet Mike and we decided to play a match. He is a very nice guy, solid player with very good skills.
Kris Srinivasan/John Rizzo over Mike Mole/Genalin Capan, 7-6 (7-4)! No Aces.
T.J. Shah/Dennis Cabanatan over Kris Srinivasan/John Rizzo, 7-6 (7-4)! No Aces.
Tim's Take: It was around 9:30pm when John Rizzo had just finished a Doubles One-Setter with Kris, T.J. and Dennis. John was very kind as he sat out and let me team up with Kris to play some Doubles against T.J. and Dennis. Thank you, John!
Kris Srinivasan/Tim Nguyen leading T.J. Shah/Dennis Cabanatan, 5-4 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Tim's Take: We were on Match Point (to our advantage) when the lights went out at 10pm! So close...and had such a great time playing with everyone!
Samara's Notes: I thank Tim and John for their very timely reporting. It is truly appreciated. I also welcome Mike back to the league as well. He may prove to be yet another dangerous competitor in the coming tournament.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
