5/5/18:
"Tournament and Challenge Matches at Nutley, Bloomfield and C.G.!":
GTA Saturday Tennis got off to an early start at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley (a site that would feature back-to-back matches from the GTA Intermediate Invitational Tournament followed by an impromptu Challenge Match which welcomed a new player to the league), and while that session was still underway we had the last remaining GTA Championship Tournament Semifinal Match played at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield as "Daddy O" Paul Daddio faced off against "Super Mario" Marijus Kuzavas (with both reporting) and then we got what is starting to become a new Saturday tradition...and extra long session at The Cedar Grove Courts that begins in the early afternoon and goes all night long, baby!
Twenty years ago on May 5th, I wrote in the GTA News Update of that time: "It is Cinco de Mayo and the GTA is sinkin' fast, Chico!" For the pro wrestling fans reading this, picture this being said in the accent of "Razor Ramon" portrayed by Scott Hall. At that time, we were getting off to a late start that season as it was yet another year plagued by lingering bad weather (either cooler than usual or just rainy and wet). We were losing players to inactivity and planned matches needed to be rescheduled.
This season, the lone similarity is the weather. And, yet, despite that fact...we have never gotten a season off to such a start at this one as every weekend is featuring multiple Tournament, Challenge or Title Matches, we have new players coming in all the time and we have sessions at Cedar Grove regularly featuring 20 or more competitors.
So twenty years later, I must say: "It is Cinco de Mayo and the GTA is bringing it, chico!" For the record, that 1998 season would rebound just a month later as we would soon see the official GTA Debut of "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli and a veritable plethora of new players. And while Spin is the only "Class of '98" alumnus still with us...that was the season that set the tone for all the bigger things to come down the road.
I realize now as I type this that I had forgot to mention back on April 15th that the GTA celebrated its 26th Birthday that day! And we are now full steam ahead in the league's 27th season...a season so busy, that I forget to report important milestones such as these...jeez! Anyway...
Getting back to the present, I will construct this report a bit differently than the usual ones as I will list the score contributors as I present the results they reported. Again, I will do my best to construct some semblance of order here...but it will be hard as the sessions did overlap somewhat (well, at least the first two did).
I was in Nutley when I realized a little before 8:45am that Umang "Ash" Jain and "NC-17" Nick Caputo had agreed to meet at The Park Ave. Courts at 9am for their GTA Intermediate Invitational Quarterfinal Match (the first one of the Quarters to be played). It then occurred to me that Ash has now been in the league for a decent amount of time, has already worked his way up the ranks and yet he had remained one of the few guys in the GTA that I had yet to meet in person.
So I pulled into the lot at 8:45 and waited in my car. Police cars immediately followed me into the lot, but thankfully they were not there for me (looks like I got away with yet another murder...bwah, ha, ha...guess I need to say "just kidding" as these reports do get posted to a blog site). It seemed like two of the guys who were there playing soccer in what was originally constructed for roller hockey (the walled-in area is set up parallel to the four tennis courts there) had some beef with each other and someone found it necessary to get the Five-O involved. Never got to see any punches thrown or anyone cuffed and hauled away...so consider this one a dud, people!
As this situation was still unfolding, Nick pulled into the lot around 8:50. I walked over to his car and informed him that the police had heard of his pending arrival. Turns out he is guilty of impersonating an Intermediate Player (ouch!). Actually, Mr. Caputo is a great guy...even if it has now been proven that he was overqualified for entry into this tourney (though he was not the only one).
So then we walked out onto the courts and took Court One (the court that I consider to be the one closest to the entrance gate...and two players had just finished playing Singles on scant minutes earlier) and we had a little bull session while waiting for Ash to arrive.
Like clockwork, Mr. Jain arrived precisely at 9am. I finally got to meet him and he is very nice. As both competitors live in Nutley, this was a very convenient location for them. I then left them to go visit my mother and help her with a few things (a somewhat abbreviated visit as I had to leave earlier than usual to take my kids to a party which would be starting in the very early afternoon).
On the way back toward Route 21 and going down Park Ave. at 10:30, I thought I might catch the end of the Jain-Caputo match (turns out it was already over and done by then). Instead, I now saw two more GTA competitors out on Court One. It was Jeremy "Got Game" Gottlieb about to go up against "SWAT" Rich Liu in their GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match (the last one of that round to be played).
They had just done the racquet twist-spin-flip thingy to decide who would serve first. I walked up to the fence to say "hi" and Rich said that he had just found out that Jeremy is a collegiate player and he did not think the situation was fair. My reply was something along the lines of playing a better player would be good for him and that this is the way this tourney unfolded this year. I then left that scene as I had to head North on 21 to head home to Passaic (as it turns out, Rich gave a solid accounting of himself in the match...playing competitors at a higher level than us often forces us to raise the level of our own game).
Speaking of "turns out," the traffic was so heavy heading down Park Ave. toward Route 21 (a guy speeding toward the light in a makeshift left lane...not sure it was in the proper "two lane" section yet...almost clipped my fender as a nice guy let me pull out of the lot in front of him), that turning left onto 21 was no longer an option. Instead, I had to go over the bridge into Lyndhurst and make the left onto Riverside Ave.
On my way home, I drove past the courts on Riverside and had the chance to take a fleeting glance over to them where I saw "The Assassin" Alfred Chen and "The Icon" Nick Inciong out on one of the courts talking to one another. They may have been waiting for another team to arrive. I do know they often get together there for non-GTA action. I had no time, at this point, to pull in and say "hello."
Now that I bored you with enough chit chat, we will grab the three results from Nutley, then the big one from Brookdale Park in Bloomfield and then close out this report with all that took place up at Cedar Grove.
The Park Ave. Courts Results:
GTA Intermediate Invitational Quarterfinal Match:
Nick Caputo over Umang Jain, 6-0, 6-0, to become both the New # 21 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division and the New # 7 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division while advancing to the Semifinals of the GTA Intermediate Invitational Tournament! No Aces.
The NC-17 Screening: We played from 9:15 to 9:45. It was just one of those days where I could do no wrong. Ash is an excellent player with very solid ground-strokes.
Samara's Notes: I thank Nick for his very timely reporting and also congratulate him on a highly impressive victory. I know that Ash is no lightweight based on the results he had already posted earlier in the tourney.
We now go to the next match from Nutley.
GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match:
Jeremy Gottlieb over Rich Liu, 6-4, 6-1, to successfully defend his # 3 Rank in the Intermediate Division while also advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Intermediate Invitational Tournament! Jeremy: 3 Aces; and Rich: 1 Ace!
The Rich Report: I fought hard in the 1st Set. In the 2nd Set, we had at least three or four games that went to multiple Deuces (I lost all of them) and one of them went to as many as 5 or 6 Deuces. I got too tired after all of that, but I at least feel like I gave Jeremy a decent workout. There's a reason why he's playing at the collegiate level. Good luck, Jeremy, in college and the rest of this tournament!
Samara's Notes: First, I thank Rich for reporting this result in such a timely fashion. I also congratulate Jeremy on a very impressive and hard-fought victory. Upon seeing the e-mail from Rich, my reply to him was that he should be proud of his effort. And his response was that he tried hard against a very solid, young player. It was a fun match.
We now go to the third and final match from Nutley.
2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Tim Nguyen over Scott Manrose, 6-3, 6-1, to successfully defend his # 48 Rank in the Intermediate Division! In the process, Manrose made his official GTA Debut as the New # 53 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division! No Aces.
The Right-On Tim Report: When we got there around 11am, Rich and Jeremy were already into their match. We warmed up for about ten minutes and then got started. The match finished around noon. It was good competition, but I managed to hold him off. Scott had several nice spin shots. Good match, Scott!
The Manrose on the Scene: Tim's a good guy. He's not a hard hitter, but he is consistent and has good court coverage. I hope to improve over the summer!
Samara's Notes: First, I thank both for their very timely reporting. Second, I welcome Mr. Manrose to the GTA. And third, I like how this match came together...someone issues an Open Challenge to the mailing list...someone else accepts and the match is made (just like last Saturday between Adam Pienciak and Ralph Bernard). This is when the league and its list functions best.
Beyond that, everyone has seen how I like to issue monikers/nicknames to all of the players. Some are obvious (especially if I have met them in person already). Some are given out by others or are even self-appointed (anointed, perhaps?). Sometimes they are harder to come by (and usually hindered further when I have yet to meet the player)...and I have yet to meet Scott. But when I hear that last name, Manrose (quite cool, by the way), I immediately think of what the lady gives out to the guys on that show, "The Bachelorette!" Because that is the only occasion I can think of when a man gets a rose other than as a boutineer for the prom (and I can see this antiquated version of Word Perfect keeps questioning the spelling of both "bachelorette" and "boutineer," but both are correct, damn it!).
So, for now, until a more fitting moniker comes along or I receive some form of protest from Scott...I offer up the nickname of "The Bachelorette's Prize" Mr. Manrose! I hope he likes it. From what I've seen of most of these Bachelorettes, I wouldn't mind being their prize or their ultimate plaything (provided we can skip the future husband part).
We now leave Nutley to head one town west to Bloomfield as Brookdale Park was the scene for the second Semifinal of the still ongoing GTA Championship Tournament.
The Brookdale Park Result:
GTA Championship Tournament Semifinal:
Paul Daddio over Marijus Kuzavas, 6-3, 6-3, to successfully defend his # 3 Rank in the Advanced Division while advancing to the Finals of the GTA Championship Tournament! No Aces.
The Scoop from Super Mario: Paul ran down way too many balls for my liking...eventually leading to me making a mistake! He also had some good passing shots and lobs against me. But, overall, it was a good and fun match.
The Dilly-O from Daddy O: We started around 11am and only two or three of the courts at Brookdale were being used at the time. Marijus has great power...I was just able to be a bit more consistent. Afterward, we played one more for fun.
Paul Daddio over Marijus Kuzavas, 7-5! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: I thank both for their timely reporting and congratulate Paul on a hard-fought and impressive victory (also kudos to Marijus for a fine effort). Lobbing over the 6'6" Marijus is definitely a tall task! Also it is interesting to note how Brookdale once again had plenty of courts available...even on a nice and sunny Saturday...further reason to keep having the GTA Sunday Tennis sessions there until the Tiger Tennis fee collectors once again rear their ugly heads once again sometime this summer.
Well, we may be done at Nutley and Bloomfield, but "Mr. NC-17" Nick Caputo was not done for the day. We now once again head one town west to Cedar Grove where Mr. Caputo brought along Mrs. Caputo (Nicole) for the very first time. Despite a lengthy time away from tennis, it turns out that she is quite the player as well!
The Cedar Grove Results:
Nick Caputo/Nicole Caputo over Mike Mole/Laurie Boughton, 7-5! Nicole: 1 Ace on Laurie! It was the official GTA Debut of Nicole Caputo.
Nick Caputo/Nicole Caputo over Mike Mole/Fadia Nicolas, 6-1! No Aces.
The NC-17 Screening: I finally got Nicole out to play some tennis. This was our first time teaming together in 25 years. Interesting to say the least, but we did OK. As Nicole looks to get back into tennis condition, we will work to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
Samara's Notes: I once again thank Nick for his timely reporting and also welcome Nicole to the league. If she ends up being anything like her hubby, I have a feeling the Caputos may become the New GTA Mixed Doubles Champions before season's end (no offense to the other formidable married tandem that are our current champs, Marijus Kuzavas and "The Smackdown" Sally Pillay).
I want to now go to Laurie's commentary about that first One-Setter as she also reported it and had her own remarks.
The Lowdown from Laurie: It was the debut of Nick's wife, Nicole, and we had a WONDERFUL set! She had at least one Ace on me. Nicole said she had not played in 20 years. Well, ya coulda fooled me! :-) She was MAHVELOUS!
Samara's Notes: On that second One-Setter above, Fadia had indicated to John Rizzo that the score was 6-3 (not 6-1 as Nick reported). Since Mr. Caputo reported it to me directly and I am getting it as "second hand news" (great song by Fleetwood Mac, by the way) from Fadia via John...I will run with Nick's version of events until otherwise corrected.
We will now grab a couple of scores from Syed before getting the rest from The Riz.
Syed Rashid/Janice Wang over Nick Inciong/Rose Inciong, 6-2! No Aces.
Syed Rashid/Nick Inciong over Janice Wang/Rose Inciong, 6-1! No Aces. In that second one, they decided to switch things up and play it "Battle of The Sexes" style.
John Rizzo/Kyle Eng over Ryan Pienciak/Arlene Hyde, 6-3! No Aces.
John Rizzo/Kyle Eng over Ryan Pienciak/Arlene Hyde, 6-4! No Aces.
Ryan Pienciak/John Rizzo over Mike Mole/Kyle Eng, 6-4! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: I thank both Syed and John for reporting those results in such a timely fashion. All told, there were 13 official competitors at Cedar Grove over the course of this entire session. Not too shabby considering that these Saturday sessions still seem to come together somewhat spur of the moment with just some back and forth on the e-mails. Good stuff!
Best wishes,
Frank Samara
