5/2/18:
"9 play in Nutley, Tommy-Nick part of 18 (1 New) at C.G.!":
There were two sessions of GTA Wednesday Night Tennis: the usual Meet-Up session at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley hosted by "SWAT" Rich Liu (but the results were reported by "The Dark Knight" Dan Knitzer) and the usual evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts which began with the GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match featuring "Tireless" Tommy Reskowski facing "NC-17" Nick Caputo (with Nick reporting), three consecutive Singles One-Setters with "The Bulgarian Bull" Jordan Bachvaroff going up against "Ice Berg" Scott Bergenfield (with Scott reporting) and then a slew of other competitors submitted results reports...and here we go in no particular order: Caputo (with additional scores), "The Riz" John Rizzo, "The Marathon Woman" Doinks Srinivasan, "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes and also "L-Boogie" Laurie Boughton (often with some results overlapping one another).
For the second straight day, it was hot, sunny and summer-like…but this time around we had a peak temperature of 90 degrees! Perhaps the additional heat reduced the turnout of the GTA players at Cedar Grove somewhat.
It should also be mentioned that "Daddy O" Paul Daddio reported having only a hitting session with "The Edge" Edgar Valencia in Brookdale Park in Bloomfield. Paul was shocked that they were the only two tennis players there on such a beautiful night. I do think this should be our back-up (fallback) location whenever the scene at The Cedar Grove Courts gets too full (which seems to already be happening early this season).
Let's first get the scores from Nutley (via Dan) before getting the full match report from Nick and then the onslaught of other Cedar Grove results from the masses (of which, once more, I will do my best to create some semblance of order...yet will likely fail miserably in doing so...LOL!).
The Park Ave. Courts Results:
Rich Liu/Arthur Fontanilla over Dan Knitzer/Rachid Baalla, 6-4! No Aces.
Dan Knitzer/Arunraj Nair over Keith Lewkowitz/Rachid Baalla, 6-1! No Aces.
Dan Knitzer over Fausto Murg, 6-2! Dan: 1 Ace!
The Dark Knight News: Fausto couldn't handle my defense! I hit around four great lobs. He had two really good drop shots.
Samara's Notes: Well, at least Dan got a measure of revenge against Fausto as it was Mr. Murg who basically "ghosted" him when it came time to negotiate a time and place for their GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 32 Match. And, perhaps, this One-Setter shows the way that match would have likely went anyway. We now go back to Dan for one more incomplete result.
Randy Doran/Rich Liu tied with Tom La/Arunraj Nair, 5-5 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: I thank Dan for his very timely reporting and additional details.
We now go to Cedar Grove...where I will once again do my best to properly recount all the results reports that were submitted by numerous and various sources. I do know that it was the match between Tommy and Nick that got things rolling up there, so we will start with that first.
The Cedar Grove Results:
GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match:
Nick Caputo over Tommy Reszkowski, 6-0, 6-1, to become both the New # 34 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division and the New # 20 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division while advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Intermediate Invitational Tournament! No Aces.
The NC-17 Screening: It was hot with some great points and several Deuce games. I enjoyed playing with Tom. He is a competitor, for sure!
Samara's Notes: I thank Nick for his very timely reporting and also congratulate him on a very impressive victory. We know how much Tommy has improved over the last year or so…which shows just how strong Nick is and why he may have to be considered the odds-on favorite to win the tourney. Nick is now the sixth player to make it to the Quarters of the GTA Intermediate Invitational...six down and just two to go!
Nick had submitted a couple other Doubles One-Setter scores (also reported by John), but I first want to go to Scott for the three Singles One-Setters he played with Jordan.
Scott Bergenfeld over Jordan Bachvaroff, 6-2! No Aces.
Scott Bergenfeld over Jordan Bachvaroff, 6-4! No Aces.
Scott Bergenfeld over Jordan Bachvaroff, 7-5! Jordan: 1 Ace!
The "Great Scott!" Scroll: We wanted to play it as a Best 3 out of 5 Sets Match, but couldn't since I am still in the active draw of the GTA Intermediate Invitational. I was on my game early and he picked it up late. We were both laboring in the third One-Setter with a lot of long points. Plus, the heat did not help our cause. It was good tennis!
Samara's Notes: I thank Scott for his prompt and comprehensive reporting. We now go to John for a few scores before we go back to Nick for one other score (there was one result that each reported), then we will turn the report over to Doinks, Nate and Laurie for anything additional.
John Rizzo/Janice Wang over Jorge Solano/Elizabeth Cho, 6-0! No Aces. It was the official GTA Debut of Elizabeth Cho.
John Rizzo/Jorge Solano over Janice Wang/Elizabeth Cho, 6-3! No Aces. They did this one "Battle of The Sexes" style! We welcome Elizabeth (friends with Janice) to the league!
Nick Caputo/Laurie Boughton over Jay Phoenix/Fadia Nicolas, 6-3! No Aces.
Ryan Pienciak/Nick Caputo over Jay Phoenix/John Rizzo, 6-1! No Aces.
Janice Wang/Elizabeth Cho over Fadia Nicolas/Laurie Boughton, 6-3! No Aces.
Fadia Nicolas/Laurie Boughton over Janice Wang/Elizabeth Cho, 6-3! No Aces.
The Lowdown from Laurie: A night of GREAT tennis with GREAT peeps! J
Janice Wang/Doinks Srinivasan over Frank Hohorst/Fadia Nicolas, 6-3! No Aces.
Rafaelo Kazakov/Nathan Fernandes over Abhilash Gadi/Natalia Sout, 6-4! No Aces.
Janice Wang/Doinks Srinivasan tied with Frank Hohorst/Fadia Nicolas, 1-1 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: I thank all the contributors at Cedar Grove for sending these results in a very timely fashion. Once again, it is greatly appreciated!
All the best,
Frank Samara
