8/3 Results.

8/3/17:

"2 play at NTC, Chazz-Jose part of 18 at C.G. as Kris hosts!":

GTA Thursday Night Tennis took place in two locations: The Nutley Tennis Club as "The Riz" John Rizzo acted as host and played three One-Setters against "The AM Rush" Anish Mehta.  And then there was the usual evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts with usual host "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan doing the duties.  But the night got started with the Grove Cup XX Round of 32 Match between "The Legendary" Chazz Weldon and "Latino Heat" Jose Gonzales (with each reporting and providing commentary).

We first go to the results from The Riz, then the details of Weldon-Gonzales and then turn this report over to Kris.

The NTC Results:

Anish Mehta over John Rizzo, 6-3!  No Aces.

Anish Mehta over John Rizzo, 6-0!  No Aces.

Anish Mehta over John Rizzo, 6-2!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: I thank John for submitting those scores in a very timely manner.

We now head up to Cedar Grove for the report from Kris, but it will first start with Weldon versus Gonzales as each competitor provided commentary as well.

The Cedar Grove Results:

Grove Cup XX Round of 32 Match:

Jose Gonzales over Chazz Weldon, 6-4, 6-1 (Weldon retired when it was 2-1 and still on serve), to become the New # 9 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division while also advancing to the Round of 16 of the 20th Annual Grove Cup Tournament!  Jose: 3 Aces (2 in the 1st Set and 1 in the 2nd Set)!

Jose has his say: I was down 1-3 in the 1st Set, but was able to win five of the next six games to take the set.  Then I was up 2-1 in the 2nd Set when Chazz decided that he could not continue.  I pleaded with him to take a ten minute break, but he felt the heat was too much…so he retired.  It is unfortunate as this match had the makings of a possible classic.

All That Chazz: In the 1st Set, we traded breaks and at one point I was up 3-1, but Jose fought back.  I was then serving at 4-5 and made three uncharacteristic errors and then Jose hit a winner on Set Point.  During this set, I was so hot that I had to take off my shirt, but to no avail.  Surprisingly, it was Jose who was withstanding the heat and humidity very well.

In the 2nd Set, I broke Jose and then Jose broke me right back and then held serve for 2-1.  At the changeover, I made the decision to call it quits and retire because of heat exhaustion and feeling the possibility of vomiting.  I really wanted to win this match, but was beaten by a player on this day.  My parting words to Jose were: "Sorry…and you better win the next round."  Jose's reply: "I will try."

Ironically, this is the same court that I cramped up on two years ago against Rob Ryan (also in the Grove Cup Tournament).  It is safe to say that I will never play another Grove Cup match on that court! :-)

Samara's Notes: I asked both of them which of the four courts it was that they played this match on, but I never received a reply in time for this report.  I believe it to be Court Four (the court that usually hosts the biggest matches of the night up at Cedar Grove).  I thank both of them for their very detailed and timely reporting.  We will now turn this report over to Kris.  It will start with his take on their match and then list the rest of the results from there.

The K has his say:  We didn't get to see the match, but apparently Chazz couldn't continue while he was down 1-2 in the 2nd Set.  I'm not sure if he was cramping, but Jose said that he couldn't play any more and had forfeited.  Not the ideal way Jose would have wanted to win, but congratulations to him on a solid victory.  He has been playing well, has been motivated to make an impact and he looks good to make inroads further.

Jose Gonzales/Janice Wang over Kris Srinivasan/Jorge Solano, 7-5!  No Aces.

We did well to be on serve the first half of the match and were leading 5-3 before a great comeback by Jose and Janice saw them through the finish line.

Senthil Kumar/Sairaj Srinivasan over Edwin Ortega/Chris Barbieri, 6-2!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Edwin Ortega over Senthil Kumar/Chris Barbieri, 6-3!  No Aces.

Edwin was firing on all cylinders with great serves, slices and court coverage.

2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:

Levy Lorenzo/Mike Mole over Omar Santos/Dave Zhu, 6-3, 6-2, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 71 and # 72 Ranked Teams respectively!  No Aces.

This match was fought tooth and nail unlike the reflection of the scores.

Senthil Kumar/Levy Lorenzo over Kris Srinivasan/Chris Barbieri, 6-1!  No Aces.

Rob Gawley/Laura Gawley over Jorge Solano/Nick Inciong, 6-2!  No Aces.

Laura was superb and wonderfully supported by Rob whose game threw off their opponents.

Jose Gonzales/Janice Wang over Edwin Ortega/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-4!  No Aces.

Rob Gawley/Laura Gawley tied with Jorge Solano/Nick Inciong, 2-2 (Incomplete when the lights went off at 10pm)!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Chris Barbieri leading Senthil Kumar/Levy Lorenzo, 3-1 (Incomplete when the lights went off at 10pm)!  No Aces.

Good stuff overall and plenty of non-stop GTA action despite very slight drizzle between 8:35 and 8:50pm.  Cheers!

Samara's Notes: I thank Kris for all he does for the GTA up at Cedar Grove.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
