7/12/17:
"MXD2 WD as Kris hosts 16 (1 new) at C.G.!":
GTA Wednesday Night Tennis only took place at The Cedar Grove Courts as "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan acted as host. But first, we must address a match that did not happen before recapping all those that actually did occur.
For quite a few weeks now, there were back and forth negotiations trying to set up the MXD2 Mixed Doubles Tournament Round of 13 Match between the two teams: Tom La/Kathy Sheldon and Norman Taclob/Christine Toth. On a couple of occasions, it seemed the attempts to schedule this match were going off the rails. Then there would be a revival of discussion and the making of the match once again seemed to be a possibility.
Over the course of Wednesday, there was correspondence between Kathy and Christine…but we never heard from either of the guys.
In the evening, Mrs. Sheldon arrived with Mr. La in tow…but Mr. Taclob and Ms. Toth were both a no-go. At this point, since this is the last of the MXD2 Round of 13 Matches to be played…we are going to have to run with the team that was ready and available. That team is La/Sheldon and they will advance to the Quarterfinals via a bye while we will have to consider Taclob/Toth as being withdrawn from the tournament (it won't be considered as a forfeit or a loss).
And now we turn this report over to Kris.
I was a late show last night arriving after 8pm. Kathy Sheldon was just leaving after a match and there was a Doubles One-Setter going on between the teams of Tito Castolo/Janice Wang against Frank Hohorst, part of Marie Salamon's Fair Lawn group, teaming up with Natalia Sout. Frank Samara had already given me the heads-up about Hohorst's possible arrival at our Cedar Grove session. Tom La and Jordan Bachvaroff were sitting out on Court 3 while Guy Dupoux and Cliff Pierre-Louis were just hitting on Court 2.
It started to drizzle a bit, stop and then drizzle again enough to motivate Tom to call it a day. My wife Doinks joined us and soon Joe Rodrigues would follow. Rob and Laura Gawley came just when it started to drizzle. They left to come back in 5 minutes when it looked like the weather would clear up for good. Dan Martinelli (aka Spin) and Dino Celis would show up later to just sit and have a tête-à-tête session.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Tom La/Kathy Sheldon over Jordan Bachvaroff/Natalia Sout, 6-4! No Aces.
Tito Castolo/Janice Wang over Frank Hohorst/Natalia Sout, 6-3! No Aces. It was the official GTA Debut of Frank Hohorst.
It is good to have Hohorst in our group. He sure looks like a Doubles specialist with nice volleys and touches. His ground-strokes were solid, both on forehand and backhand. Janice was flowing in her shots and Tito punished the opposition every now and then…so much so that Natalia had to call him out for being mean…:-).
Kris Srinivasan/Joe Rodrigues over Jordan Bachvaroff/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-2! Jordan: 2 Aces on Kris; and Joe: 1 Ace on Jordan!
Jordan started off by reeling off 2 Aces on me as I was caught flat-footed and yet to get the body moving, but that would change as the match would progress. Joe played smart, aggressive tennis backed up by his good serves. Doinks had the lack of warm-up problem and, before long, the set was over.
Tito Castolo/Janice Wang over Rob Gawley/Laura Gawley, 6-3! No Aces.
It looked like a good match that saw all the players have their moments of glory. But Tito would hoodwink "The Dream Team" as he was aided superbly by Janice.
Kris Srinivasan/Joe Rodrigues over Jordan Bachvaroff/Frank Hohorst, 6-2! Jordan: 1 Ace on Joe!
It was a good match, especially in the beginning that saw some long drawn-out games. We got to see Frank's consistent play, but Jordan's mixed bag was a game-changer.
Jordan Bachvaroff/Frank Hohorst leading Kris Srinivasan/Joe Rodrigues, 2-1 (Incomplete when the rains returned)! No Aces.
Jordan got his groove back and shelved his unforced errors. Still, the games were long and the match was abandoned with the advent of the drizzle taking the shape of rains quickly. We were on serve, if it means anything...haha.
Mike Mole/Guy Dupoux over Don Moya/Cliff Pierre-Louis, 6-4! No Aces.
I am glad to put together the two teams hoping there would be some balance. Indeed, it turned out to be great as Guy would gush at the end of the session that it was fun and that they got to play some great tennis. It must have been a long match as well for they played just one set for the night.
It was yet another short and curtailed session on a muggy night and it looks like a similar situation is in the cards for a couple more days. Cheers!
Samara's Notes: As always, I thank Kris for all he does for the GTA up at Cedar Grove.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
