10/5 Results

10/5/16:

"Kris hosts 10 at C.G. featuring Pienciak-Porucznik!":

GTA Wednesday Night Tennis took place at The Cedar Grove Courts with "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan acting as the host.

Let's get the report from Kris right now!

It was relatively a cool and quiet night for the GTA with The Verona Crew still hanging out at The Cedar Grove Courts.

Brenda Jordan and Dawn Peterson were the early birds and took the court over from The Wednesday Ladies who finish at 7pm.

This time around we lost 3 courts to The Verona Crew and, with Ted Cedroski looking to take the one remaining court, Brenda took charge and offered Ted an opportunity to play Doubles instead.

Initially, there was a hitting session with Dawn and my son Sairaj on one side and Ted and Brenda on the other side.  Doinks came over with me eager to play, but upon seeing the situation she decided to go for a run instead.  When Ted's pal, Walter Porucznik came, he took over from Sairaj to start a Doubles One-Setter (he would later end up playing a full Singles Match with Ryan Pienciak).

The Cedar Grove Results:

Walter Porucznik/Dawn Peterson over Ted Cedroski/Brenda Jordan, 6-1!  No Aces (apparently).  It was the official GTA Return of Walter Porucznik.

Both Dawn and Walter were solid in their game.  Brenda was doing fairly well, but an over-eager Ted ventured into her territory quite a few times…but overall was not getting his bearings properly.  There were some put-aways at the net by Walter and he pretty much got all his first serves in.

Kris Srinivasan/Brenda Jordan over Ted Cedroski/Dawn Peterson, 7-6 (7-3)!  No Aces.

It was a match where we shouldn't have struggled that hard, but it would be my woe to be unable to play freely with a different racquet.  Dawn was the star playing an almost error-free match.  She was incredible with volleys and played with great confidence.  Ted was also able to play a much better game. For us, Brenda did splendidly and my role was incredible in that I messed up when we should be closing, but then I rescued when we were down.

2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:

Walter Porucznik over Ryan Pienciak, 6-0, 6-2, to become the New # 18 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division!  No Aces (apparently).

Ryan was in for a big surprise as the deceptively quiet Walter seemed to know where to hit Ryan hard. He played strategically, running Ryan around and closing the points emphatically.  Walter looks like a guy one can take on easily, but then you see a different picture as he plays with amazing consistency, good serves and placements.  We need to take a closer look at this guy...:-).  It was an impressive victory where Walter had a matter-of-fact look to his win!

Walter Porucznik/Brenda Jordan over Kris Srinivasan/Ryan Pienciak, 7-6 (7-3)!  No Aces.

This was a match we were cruising, but managed to throw ourselves under the guillotine.  Walter and Brenda staged a great comeback winning 4 games in a row to go up 5-4.  We manged to tie it up in the next game only to then lose the following game.  So it was another struggle again going the distance, but the result was in favor of Walter and Brenda.  A quiet and unassuming guy, Walter is good to have in our group and looks to be close to a 4.0.  Brenda did well again and, after a disastrous start, it was a very satisfying night for her.

Samara's Notes: Despite Walter's perceived skill level, he defeated a player who was ranked solely in the Intermediate Division…so that is where he ends up for now.  If he continues to play with us on a regular basis, I am sure he would make the jump to the Advanced Division rather quickly…and then perhaps get into The Top 5 of the "A" Division and permanently get himself out of the "I-M" Division.

We now go back to Kris.

Raj Shah was sitting in his car and, when I saw his car, I asked him to get into the action.  Luckily for him, Rob and Laura Gawley came just then, followed by Dennis Cabanatan.  The Verona Crew had vacated one court by 7:30 and another by 8pm…but then another set of 4 players grabbed one of these two courts!

Rob Gawley/Laura Gawley over Raj Shah/Dennis Cabanatan, 7-5!  Laura: 1 Ace on Raj!

Raj Shah/Dennis Cabanatan over Rob Gawley/Laura Gawley, 6-4!  No Aces.

Rob and Laura are a force to reckon with and indeed they showcased their skills against Raj and Dennis. It takes a little beating for Raj to get fired up and he was able to smile after their second One-Setter...:-).

Ryan Pienciak leading Kris Srinivasan, 4-1 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)!  No Aces.

In the last 25 minutes or so, we played a Singles One-Setter that didn't get to see its proper finish.  Ryan was leading in almost all the games like 40-Love before we would see it get to Deuce or I would be down Love-40 and inevitably Ryan then got to wrap up those games.  Still, it was good tennis, but the result should have gone to Ryan favorably had we completed the set.

Overall, it wasn't too shabby a session as we had some intense matches even though the turnout was on the lower side.  Cheers!

Samara's Notes: As always, The K Man is the man up at Cedar Grove!  We appreciate all he does for the GTA up there.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
