"Kumar-Ortega in Wayne, Toker-Mazur 1-Setters in W.R.!":
GTA Saturday Tennis took place at two locations: The Nellis Drive Courts in Wayne featuring a GTA Intermediate Title Match as The GTA Intermediate Champ: Senthil "The Webmaster" Kumar put his Title on the line against "Eddie O" Edwin Ortega (results reported by Senthil) and The Wood-Ridge Courts as "The Argentine Machine" Fernanda Toker and "Automatic" Anna Mazur faced off in what they thought was a full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match, but since Toker is still in the ongoing GAH6 Women's Singles Tournament (Final against "Spicy" Sally Pillay still pending)…she cannot accept any outside challenges at this time. Thus, it had to be broken down into two One-Setters (Anna reported the scores).
There was no GTA Saturday Night Tennis at The Cedar Grove Courts.
The Wayne Results:
GTA Intermediate Title Match:
Senthil Kumar over Edwin Ortega, 6-4, 6-1, to complete his first successful GTA Intermediate Title defense as well as defend his # 12 Rank in the Advanced Division! Edwin: 2 Aces (one in each set)!
The Untangled Web by Senthil: We started at 8am and warmed up for 15 minutes. The temperature at starting time was 40 degrees. So cold, but lucky we had sun and it eventually warmed up by the 2nd Set.
I won the toss and served and lost the first game after two Deuces. Then I won a break to level at 1-1 and then lead the 1st Set after a break for 4-1. Edwin fought back to level it at 4-4. I took the next two games to win the set at 6-4. Edwin made one Ace on me with nice slice on it and a lot of spin. Due to the cold, I served poorly.
The 2nd Set pretty much went the same way as I lost the first game, but then took the break back to level it at 1-1. Again, I then jumped out to a 4-1 lead. But this time around, I took the set at 6-1. Edwin made another Ace in this one. Some of the games were close and went to Deuce. This set's score is not indicative of the way the set went. Especially, the sixth game of the set which probably was 10 Deuces before I finally took that game.
Unfortunately, I acknowledge that I already knew Edwin's style of play…so that worked in my favor. I feel that Edwin is one of the most improved players this season.
The match concluded by 9:25 and then we decided to play an additional One-Setter.
Senthil Kumar over Edwin Ortega, 6-2! Edwin: 1 Ace.
The Untangled Web: By this time the weather was good, so I started moving better and played many points with a serve and volley style.
Samara's Notes: I thank Senthil for his very timely reporting and congratulate him on his victory. When we discuss "most improved players", that conversation would be incomplete if it did not include Senthil as well as he ranks high on that list this season.
And now we go to Wood-Ridge for the scores from Anna.
The Wood-Ridge Results:
Fernanda Toker over Anna Mazur, 6-1! No Aces (apparently).
Fernanda Toker over Anna Mazur, 6-4! No Aces (apparently).
Samara's Notes: I thank Anna for her very timely reporting of these scores, though I do not know exactly what time they played that day.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
