10/11 Results.

10/11/16:

"Samara hosts 23 (1 New, 1 Return) at C.G.!:

There was just one session of GTA Tuesday Night Tennis: the usual later session up at The Cedar Grove Courts hosted by "Hollywood" Frank Samara (with an assist from the usual host there, "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan).

Let's now recap all that transpired up at Cedar Grove.

Dennis "The Menace" Cabanatan brought Samara up there and they pulled into the parking lot at 7:30 just as GTA Champion: "King Crush" Chris Chiaro was doing the same.

The good news was that The Pickle Ballers were leaving the courts at that time.  The better news was that they told both GTA Women's Champion: Laura "The Aura" Gawley and "J-Bach" Jordan Bachvaroff that this would be their last Tuesday night session of the season.

On Court One, Bachvaroff was battling "A-Tru" Andrew Truong in Singles (originally intended to be a full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match, they shortened it to a One-Setter due to the growing crowd).

On Court Two, "The Secret Weapon" Sairaj Srinivasan was teaming with "Bravo" Brenda Jordan to take on "The Rainmaker" Richard Reicht and "Dominant" Dawn Peterson.

On Court Three, an Asian couple had taken it over just as The Pickle Ballers were still getting off of it (this ended up being quite problematic as the GTA Gang just kept coming in droves).

And on Court Four, Chiaro, Gawley, "Super Mario" Marijus Kuzavas and "Spicy" Sally Pillay were the first four from our group to be able to take over that court.  It soon led to Mixed Doubles with the teams in the order of how I just laid out those names.

Already there waiting were "The Lumberjack" Ryan Pienciak and "The Art Font" Arthur Fontanilla (who had responded to the Open Challenge of Truong, but now Andrew was already battling Jordan).

At 7:35, "Coach" Dino Celis, "Mr. 500" Levy Lorenzo, "The Natural" Natalie Guzman, "The GDP" Guy Dupoux and another friend of his, "Louie Louie" Luis Salgado, had all arrived.

It was rapidly becoming Logjam City!

At 7:45, Kris came across the street just as "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli arrived.  The Doc could not believe the amount of people he saw standing outside the fence just waiting like rabid dogs to get into the action!

Bachvaroff and Truong finished their One-Setter at this time and were nice enough to let four new players take over their court.  The wait ended up being so long, that both left (after sitting and talking a while) without getting involved in any other action.

The same thing happened to the four who finished the Mixed Doubles action (except for Sairaj who waited around long enough to get back into more action later in the session).

At 8:10, "The Marathon Woman" Doinks Srinivasan came across the street just as "The Lethal Lefty" Lou La Forgia was arriving.  Both of them experienced a long wait as well.

The logjam led to all the following players leaving in the 8:15-8:20 time span: Reicht, Jordan, Peterson, Fontanilla, Truong and Bachvaroff.

It is too bad they were not just a little more patient as that couple abandoned Court Three at 8:35 (they were really only there for about an hour).  We then had all four courts for the rest of the evening.  Martinelli would be the next to go as the other 16 competitors still in attendance were looking to get as much playing time in as possible.

We ended up with a very impressive total of 23 official competitors over the course of the entire session.  The action moved quickly, so let's go to those scores now.

The Cedar Grove Results:

Jordan Bachvaroff over Andrew Truong, 6-4!  Andrew: 2 Aces.  They said they likely got this one started on Court One around 7pm.  It ended exactly at 7:44.  The two of them had played a full Singles Match with one another the night before, but since nobody reported the score...it'll have to remain as unofficial.  They both hope to face each other in a full official match in the near future.

Sairaj Srinivasan/Brenda Jordan over Richard Reicht/Dawn Peterson, 6-2!  Sairaj: 1 Ace on Richard.  They estimated that this one began on Court Two around 7:15.  It finished at 7:57.

Chris Chiaro/Laura Gawley over Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay, 6-0!  No Aces.  After their hitting session on Court Four, this one must have gotten underway somewhere around 7:40/7:45.  It ended at 8:05.

Ryan Pienciak/Arthur Fontanilla over Dino Celis/Natalie Guzman, 6-1!  No Aces.  It was the official GTA Return of Arthur Fontanilla.  This one took place on Court One from 7:55 to 8:18.

Dennis Cabanatan/Guy Dupoux over Levy Lorenzo/Luis Salgado, 6-1!  Guy: 1 Ace on Luis on his very first serve!  It was the official GTA Debut of Luis Salgado.  Court Two hosted this one from 8:10 to 8:32.

Chris Chiaro/Laura Gawley over Kris Srinivasan/Dan Martinelli, 6-1!  No Aces.  This foursome faced off on Court Four from 8:10 to 8:35.

2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Doubles Match:
Ryan Pienciak/Doinks Srinivasan over Dino Celis/Natalie Guzman, 6-3, 6-0, as both teams entered the Mixed Doubles Division as the New # 31 and # 32 Ranked Teams respectively!  Ryan: 1 Ace on Natalie in the 1st Set.  This one took place on Court One from 8:25 to 9:10.

Lou La Forgia/Sairaj Srinivasan over Guy Dupoux/Luis Salgado, 6-3!  No Aces.  This was contested on Court Two from 8:40 to 9:07.

Dennis Cabanatan/Laura Gawley over Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay, 6-3!  Marijus: 1 Ace on Laura.  They faced off on Court Four from 8:40 to 9:12.

Chris Chiaro/Levy Lorenzo over Frank Samara/Kris Srinivasan, 6-4!  No Aces.  It went like this: Kris was broken (Levy hit a winning return for Love-15 and then it went point for point until 30-All and Chris hit a hellacious winner along the way and then a Double Fault set up Break Point and then came the break) and Chris held serve (Love-15 shifted to 30-15 as Chris hit a winner along the way, but then it shifted to Break Point as Kris made a nice get/net cord winner combo, but then Chris hit a passing shot winner to make it Deuce, it then went to Game Point, 2nd Deuce where Chris hit another winner to set up Game Point, then 3rd Deuce where Chris hit a crushing volley for Game Point where he then finished the game off with a monster Overhead Smash) to go up 2-0!  Frank held at Love as back-to-back winning Overhead Smashes by Kris made it 30-Love and then an un-returned serve on Triple Game Point secured the hold and then Levy was broken (Kris blew a volley for 30-Love, but then Levy blew a volley and then Frank hit a winning drop shot return in the next point to level it at 30-All, but then an un-returned serve set up Game Point, then it went to Deuce where Levy made an unbelievable get/passing shot winner combo to bring it again to Game Point, but then it went to 2nd Deuce, Break Point and the break) to level the set at 2-2.  Srinivasan was broken again (two passing shot winners from Chris led to  Triple Break Point, an un-returned serve cut it to Double Break Point, but then came the break) and Chiaro held again and this time it was at Love as Kris blew an overhead to open the game, there was an excellent rally in the next point, an un-returned serve and a winner from Chris to secure his own hold and go up 4-2!  Samara was broken (Levy hit a drop shot winner to set up Triple Break Point, then it was Double Break Point where Chris hit a killer Overhead Smash for the break) as his team fell to 2-5!  Lorenzo was broken again (15-Love then point for point until 30-All and then a Double Fault made it Break Point, it went to Deuce where Kris hit a winning drop shot return to make it Break Point again and then came the break) and then The K Man finally held (15-Love, 15-All and then onto Double Game Point with an un-returned serve along the way and then came the hold) to then pull to 4-5!  But King Crush had his third straight hold and his second one at Love as he hit a scorching winner to set up Triple Game/Match Point and then they got the job done on the next one to get the win!  We played this on Court Three from 8:40 to 9:19.

The Skinny: Samara played well despite a one-week layoff and Lorenzo played surprisingly well as he is still dealing with a bad case of tennis elbow.  Srinivasan said he is having trouble finding his rhythm while Chiaro (aka The Champ) was the dominant force in this one as he never was broken on serve and simply took over several points the way he usually does.

Dino Celis/Ryan Pienciak over Lou La Forgia/Sairaj Srinivasan, 6-3!  No Aces.  This one occupied Court One from 9:15 to 9:40.  Afterward, Dino and Ryan had a hitting session with one another that lasted right until 10pm.

Chris Chiaro/Levy Lorenzo over Frank Samara/Kris Srinivasan, 6-2!  Kris: 1 Ace on Levy.  Here's how it went down: Kris was broken (Levy hit a winning Overhead Smash and then Chris hit a winner to make it Love-30 and that was where an awesome rally where everyone seemingly hit an Overhead Smash only to have it sent back over the net led to a moment where Levy scooped one up with a lob that almost sailed over both of his opponents only to have Frank revert to his younger Air Samara days and come back with a very improbable Overhead Smash to end the point and make it 15-30, but then Chris hit a winner to set up Double Break Point and then came the break) and Chris held in an epic struggle of a game where I could only remember the most pivotal winners as Kris hit a sizzling return winner for Love-15 and then Levy had a rapid reflex winning volley for 15-All and then he hit another winning volley for 30-15, it was then 30-All where Chris made one of his signature get/winner combos to go up Game Point, it then went to Deuce, Game Point, 2nd Deuce, Break Point, 3rd Deuce, Break Point, 4th Deuce where Kris hit an awesome winning volley for Break Point again only to have Chris victimize Frank with a well-placed drop shot winner for Deuce and then do the same damn thing the next point to make it Game Point and then came the hold to go up 2-0!  Frank was broken (Kris hit another amazing volley to make it 15-Love, but then it was straight to Double Break Point as Levy hit a winning Overhead Smash, Chris hit a winner, Levy hit a winning mishit volley and then Chris hit a winning Overhead Smash to get the break) to fall to 0-3!  Levy was broken (Levy mysteriously blew what should have been a certain winning volley to make it Love-15, it was then 15-All before heading right to Double Break Point, the break came on Break Point) and Srinivasan held (Love-15, Kris hit a winning Backhand Volley for 15-All and then scored a nice Ace up the T against Levy for 30-15, it then went to Double Game Point, the hold came on Game Point) to pull to 2-3.  Chiaro held again (Love-15 went right to Double Game Point with two winners from Chris along the way and then he hit a third to secure his own hold) and Samara was broken again (Chris made another one of his amazing get/winner combos for Love-15, it then went Love-30, 15-30, Double Break Point and the break) and then Lorenzo held in a fierce battle (Frank hit an impressive winning Overhead Smash for Love-15 only to have Chris respond with an even better passing shot winner for 15-All and then it was point for point until 30-All as Levy also had a passing shot winner along the way and then an un-returned serve set up Game/Match Point and then it went to Deuce, 2nd Game/Match Point, 2nd Deuce, Break Point where Kris blew a volley to bring it back to 3rd Deuce and then it was the 3rd Game/Match Point where Frank...who had been so clutch in this game...ended up putting the return into the net to allow the hold and the win for the opposition!) to close this one out on Court Three at exactly 9:53 (we started it at 9:20)!

The Skinny: Kris wanted revenge, but it was not in the cards as Chris was the ultimate dealer who made his opponents look like a couple of Jokers!

Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay tied with Dennis Cabanatan/Doinks Srinivasan, 5-5 (and at Deuce when the lights went out at 10pm)!  Doinks: 1 Ace on Sally!  This one had begun on Court Four at 9:15.

All in all, it was quite a night!

Best wishes,
Frank Samara
