5/1/18:
"Edgar-Randy in W.P., 8 play in Nutley, Scott-Mu part of 29 at C.G.!":
There were three sessions of GTA Tuesday Tennis: a late afternoon one at The Rose Park Courts in Woodland Park which only featured the GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match between "Salsa Picante" Edwin Ortega and "Ravishing" Randy Doran (as reported by both), then the usual Meet-Up session at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley hosted by "SWAT" Rich Liu (results reported by Rich and Nick "The Icon" Inciong) and the usual evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts which began with the GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match featuring "Ice Berg" Scott Bergenfeld going up against "Diver Down" Muhammad Haque (aka "Mu" for subject line purposes...and with both reporting) and then a slew of other competitors submitted results reports...and here we go in no particular order: "The Riz" John Rizzo, "The S Bomber" Genalin Capan, "King Crush" Chris Chiaro, "The Marathon Woman" Doinks Srinivasan, "The Lumberjack" Ryan Pienciak, "Sadistic" Syed Rashid, "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes and "Kevlar" Kevin Doyle (often with some results overlapping one another).
When the weather suddenly transformed into hot, sunny and summer-like with a peak temperature of 80 degrees (perhaps more), the GTA players turned out in droves!
Let's first get the tourney result from both Edwin and Randy in Woodland Park, then the handful of scores from Nutley (Rich and Nick) before getting the onslaught of Cedar Grove results from the masses (of which I will do my best to create some semblance of order...yet will likely fail miserably in doing so...LOL!).
The Rose Park Result:
GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match:
Randy Doran over Edwin Ortega, 6-2, 6-4, to become both the New # 14 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division and the New # 1 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division while advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Intermediate Invitational Tournament! Edwin: 2 Aces in the 2nd Set; and Randy: 1 Ace in the 2nd Set!
A Scoop of Salsa: Randy was a very good opponent. He had good placements and winners. While I had some good winners of my own, I also missed routine, easy shots. There was even a game in the 1st Set where I was up Triple Game Point and still couldn't close it out! Blame it on the heat! :-(
Congrats and good luck to Randy!
The Ravishing Report: We played on Court Four and started around 4'ish. Edwin was a great opponent with a steady game. His serves were heating up more in the 2nd Set. Unfortunately for the both of us, the afternoon sun and heat were blazing down on us with little wind to cool us down...thus, zapping our energy!
Samara's Notes: I thank both for their timely reporting and congratulate Randy on a very impressive victory! Randy is the fourth player into the Quarters...which means we are now halfway thru the Round of 16.
We now go to Nutley for the dual report from Rich and Nick.
The Park Ave. Courts Results:
Rich Liu/Edgar Valencia over Keith Lewkowitz/Arunraj Nair, 6-4! No Aces.
Keith Lewkowitz/Arunraj Nair leading Rich Liu/Edgar Valencia, 6-5 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Tom La/Nick Inciong tied with Umang Jain/David Caicedo, 5-5 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
The "Nick at Nite" News: When I arrived at Park Ave. at 8:15, all four courts were taken. Rich, Edgar and their two friends were waiting near the entrance gate. Tom arrived soon after. Rich's foursome was able to take the next available court. By the time Tom and I got a court, it was close to 9pm. We started hitting with Ash and David and soon decided to play the set (listed above), but did not have time to finish it.
Samara's Notes: I thank both Rich and Nick for their timely reporting. I appreciate the additional details from Nick as well.
We now go to Cedar Grove...where I will do my best to properly recount (catalog, perhaps?) all the results reports that were submitted by numerous and various sources. I do know that it was the match between Scott and Muhammad that got things rolling up there, so we will start with that first.
The Cedar Grove Results:
GTA Intermediate Invitational Round of 16 Match:
Scott Bergenfeld over Muhammad Haque, 6-4, 6-3, to become the New # 24 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division while advancing to the Quarterfinals of the GTA Intermediate Invitational Tournament! Scott: 2 Aces in the 2nd Set!
The "Great Scott!" Scroll: It was a very competitive match. I was hitting the tape a lot! I hit at least six Double Faults...very inconsistent! Meanwhile, he was a wall as he got back nearly everything.
The "Diver Down" Lowdown: In the 2nd Set, I was leading 3-1 but could not hold on to that lead due to the heat. I felt so tired. And Scott played good. Thankful its over!
Samara's Notes: I thank both for their very timely reporting and also congratulate Scott on a hard-fought victory. He is now the fifth player to make it to the Quarters of the GTA Intermediate Invitational...five down and three to go! And I also must say that I am impressed by the effort made by Muhammad here as Scott holds a significant experience advantage over him. Mr. Haque is improving by leaps and bounds.
We now turn this report over to John, but we have not yet heard the last from Scott.
Syed Rashid/Mike Sindler over Jordan Bachvaroff/Chazz Weldon, 6-4! No Aces.
Nick Caputo/Dawn Peterson over John Rizzo/Fadia Nicolas, 6-4! No Aces.
2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
Senthil Kumar/Scott Bergenfeld over John Rizzo/Nick Caputo, 6-3, 7-5, to become the New # 72 Ranked Team in the Doubles Division! No Aces.
The Riz Report: We played the 1st Set and then stopped to let other people onto our court. We all agreed to make the 2nd Set a winner take all so not to clog up the courts.
The "Great Scott!" Scroll: What Rizzo neglects to mention is that Nick said to us between sets, "You will never win an F'ing set off us ever again!"
Samara's Notes: First, let me say that I had to censor Nick's comment somewhat as these e-mails have turned into somewhat of a "family publication" over the years (you should have seen them in the old days!). Second, I'm not quite sure what The Riz means when he says "winner take all." It would have either been a full match (as it ended up being) or they would have split two separate One-Setters. Were they going to flip the score of the 1st Set?!?!
OK. John had reported one more score which was an incomplete result (and Doinks had reported the same). I am going to save all the incomplete results for the end of the report as they obviously took place at the end of the night. I will now do my best to grab results from the rest of our contributors and attempt to list them in the best order possible.
Chris Chiaro/Dino Celis over Joe Rodrigues/Jorge Solano, 7-6 (7-4)! Chris: 1 Ace on Joe; Jorge: 1 Ace on Dino; and Dino: 1 Ace on Jorge!
Marijus Kuzavas/Mike Kazlauskas over Ryan Pienciak/Syed Rashid, 6-3! No Aces.
Chris Chiaro/Joe Rodrigues over Adam Pienciak/Lou La Forgia, 6-4! Chris: 2 Aces on Lou!
Rajan Shah/Matt Fortunato over T.J. Shah/Kevin Doyle, 7-5! No Aces.
The Kevlar Commentary: Prior to this One-Setter, Matt and I were just hitting with one another...we never played a Singles One-Setter. Then John brought over Rajan and T.J.
Nathan Fernandes/Natalia Sout over Kevin Doyle/Matt Fortunato, 6-2! No Aces.
Nathan Fernandes/Natalia Sout over Fadia Nicolas/Dawn Peterson, 6-3! No Aces.
Kevin Doyle/Fadia Nicolas over Doinks Srinivasan/Genalin Capan, 6-4! No Aces.
The Kevlar Commentary: I was already exhausted by this time, but the ladies were looking to play more and needed a fourth...so I decided to go back for one more before calling it a night.
Gen's Notes: I got there around 8:30. We played this one from 8:40 to 9:15. Thanks to Kevin for staying around to play one more set with the ladies.
Nathan Fernandes/Natalia Sout over T.J. Shah/Rajan Shah, 7-5! No Aces.
Ryan Pienciak/Marijus Kuzavas over Tito Castolo/Genalin Capan, 6-2! No Aces. We played this one from 9:18 to 9:38.
Senthil Kumar/Fadia Nicolas leading John Rizzo/Doinks Srinivasan, 4-2 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Ryan Pienciak/Nick Caputo tied with Marijus Kuzavas/Tito Castolo, 3-3 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: I thank all the contributors at Cedar Grove for sending these results in a very timely fashion. It is greatly appreciated!
All the best,
Frank Samara
