10/11 Results.

10/11/17:

"Kumar-Ortega in Wayne, Liu-Valencia at PAC!":

There were two sessions of GTA Wednesday Tennis: the first was a daytime one at the Point View Courts in Wayne featuring the full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match between "The Webmaster" Senthil Kumar and "Salsa Picante" Edwin Ortega (reported by Senthil) and then an evening one at The Park Ave. Courts in Nutley as "Richie" Rich Liu and Edgar "Valentino" Valencia also got together for a full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match (reported by Rich).

The usual evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts (more often than not hosted by "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan) must have been rained out as I received no scores from there.  In fact, I am very surprised they were able to play in Nutley in the evening hours.

Let's first get the result from Senthil and then the result from Rich along with his commentary.

The Point View Courts Result:

3 out of 5 Sets Challenge Match:

Senthil Kumar over Edwin Ortega, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, to successfully defend both his # 13 Rank in the Advanced Division and his # 2 Rank in the Intermediate Division!  No Aces.

Samara's Notes: I thank Senthil for submitting that result in very timely fashion.  We now turn this report over to Rich.

The Park Ave. Courts Result:

2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:

Rich Liu over Edgar Valencia, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, to successfully defend his # 32 Rank in the Intermediate Division!  Edgar: 3 Aces; and Rich: 2 Aces!

The Richie Rich Rundown: Eddie and I played some GTA Tennis at Park Ave.  The match lasted around two hours and change as we started around 7:30pm and finished after 9:30.

It was a rainy afternoon in Nutley so Ed and I weren't sure we would be able to play.  Around 7pm, the rain had cleared so we decided to meet at PAC.  I arrived first around 7:15.  I had worked from home today so getting there was no problem.  The lights were on and, for once, no one was there so there was no need to wait.  The courts were a little wet, but not too bad…certainly not enough to deter a couple of GTA Tennis enthusiasts like Eddie and myself.  Eddie arrived a few minutes later and we warmed up.

No one else came, so we decided to play Singles.  It was a great 1st Set as Eddie was up 2-0 with his mighty serve and forehand before I had a chance to blink.  I fought back and eventually won it, 7-5.  The next set Eddie was anxious to get his "W" and quickly was up 4-0, once again killing me with his precise stinging forehand…particularly against a weak second serve upon his return.  Eddie won it easily at 6-3.  So at that point we had to play a 3rd Set to make it a full match.  This time I had an answer for Eddie's well-placed forehand as I returned them for winners instead.  I held at 6-1, although the set was quite competitive.  Overall, it was a great march without as many unforced errors as I would usually make.  We both had many winners and good rallies.  It was great to play a full Singles Match as I feel this really helps me improve my game.

Samara's Notes: I thank Rich for submitting that result in such a timely manner and I especially appreciate the colorful and comprehensive commentary.  Mr. Liu is becoming quite the host for the GTA.

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
