6/3 Results.

6/3/17:

"Fernandes-Mole at W.P., Kaz-Panda part of 13 at C.G.!":

There were two sessions of GTA Saturday Tennis: an early afternoon one at The Rose Park Courts in Woodland Park (formerly known as West Paterson) as "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes and "Mr. Science" Mike Mole squared off against one another in a full 2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match (with Mike reporting) and then an early evening into the night session at Cedar Grove where there was the GTA Intermediate Invitational Quarterfinal Match between "Big Kaz" Mike Kazlauskas and "The Annihilator" Nihar Panda (with Mike reporting).  Mike wasn't the only host there as both "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan and "The S Bomber" Genalin Capan also acted as hosts and submitted reports.

We will first get that result from Mike and then turn this report over to Gen.

The Rose Park Result:

2 out of 3 Sets Challenge Match:
Nathan Fernandes over Mike Mole, 6-3, 6-4, to successfully defend his # 3 Rank in the Advanced Division!  No Aces.

The Mole Memo: They played this match from 12:30 to 2pm.  The courts are recently redone (as originally reported to the league by "Big George" Jorge Solano) and also there are lights there as well.

Samara's Notes: I thank Mike for his very timely reporting of that result.  I also think we may have found a possible third location for late GTA Weeknight Tennis if the attendance at Cedar Grove starts to grow to overflow status.  I believe it would be a fairly short drive from C.G. to W.P., if need be.

And now we go to Mike, Gen and Kris in that order.

The Cedar Grove Results:

GTA Intermediate Invitational Quarterfinal:
Nihar Panda over Mike Kazlauskas, 6-4, 6-1, to become both the New # 10 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division and the New # 13 Ranked Player in the Intermediate Division!  Nihar: 1 Ace in the 1st Set.

The Kaz Commentary: We initially decided to play the match on Saturday morning, but then we postponed it for the evening due to the wet conditions in the morning.

We met up at the C.G. Courts at 6pm.  At the time, there were no open courts so we joined Syed Rashid and Mike Sindler for a hitting session.  Soon they decided to leave, thus allowing Nihar and I to get on with our match.  We started playing around 6:30 and the match lasted to about 8pm.

We each held our first two service games.  Then I broke Nihar's serve and took a lead at 3-2.  However, Nihar broke my serve right back.  That's when my game unraveled.  I started making unforced errors and Nihar got to all the long or short balls.  In the 2nd Set, I was not able to hold in any of my service games and I broke Nihar just once.

Nihar is a very skilled player and a tough opponent to play against.  Congrats to him on the victory!

Samara's Notes: I thank Mike for his very timely reporting of that match and I also congratulate Nihar on a very impressive victory.  I also lament the fact that I have now fallen to a new all-time low of being ranked # 20 in the Advanced Division.  Oh well…maybe I can bounce back up in the upcoming Grove Cup.

We now go to Gen's recap of several scores (one of which was also reported by "Mr. Science" Mike Mole).

Mike Mole/Genalin Capan over Raj Shah/Melvin Hyman, 6-2!  Mike: 1 Ace on Mel.  They played this one from 5:45 to 6:30.

Raj Shah over Mike Mole, 6-0!  Raj: 1 Ace.

The Mole Memo: He didn't get rusty!  Heehee!  This one was played from 6:30 to 6:55.

Raj Shah/Doinks Srinivasan over Mike Mole/Genalin Capan, 6-3!  Doinks: 1 Ace on Gen.  They played this one from 7:40 to 8:10.

Mike Mole/Genalin Capan over Raj Shah/Doinks Srinivasan, 7-6 (9-7)!  Doinks: 1 Ace on Mike; Mike: 1 Ace on Raj; and Raj: 1 Ace on Gen.

Gen's Notes: We played this from 8:15 to 9:10.  It was fun and competitive till the very end.  The TB started at 9pm.  It was 2-2, 3-3 and then we went up 5-3 only for it to go to 5-5.  We were up 6-5, then it was 6-6 at the second changeover.  We were down 6-7, then it was 7-7, 8-7 and we got it at 9-7!

Samara's Notes: I thank Gen for her very timely and thorough reporting.  This one sounds like an almost certain Nominee for One-Set Mixed Doubles Match of The Year at season's end.

And now we turn the rest of this report over to Kris.

Gen, Mike Mole, Raj Shah and Mel were the first to play a Doubles One-Setter (as reported earlier).

"I am back" was the statement made by the emphatic arrival of Raj Shah with his thumping 6-Love win over Mole.

After hitting a bit with Raj, I let Gen and Mole play Mixed Doubles against Raj and Doinks.  It was a hitting session with Sairaj before I teamed up with him against Ryan Pienciak and Rafaelo Kazakov.

Ryan Pienciak/Rafaelo Kazakov over Kris Srinivasan/Sairaj Srinivasan, 6-4!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Sairaj Srinivasan over Ryan Pienciak/Rafaelo Kazakov, 6-4!  No Aces.

Sairaj was brilliant, so I take full ownership of our loss.  Ryan was attacking at the net as usual.  But Sairaj's backhand shots were so "suuweet" as they bisected Ryan at the net and Rafaelo at the baseline.  Quite a few went unanswered.  He was able to sow some dread in the mind of his opponents at times.  We did well to take the second One-Setter, but we had missed on 4 Break Points on Ryan's serve to get the break.

Dave Zhu over Omar Santos, 6-3!  No Aces.

Kris Srinivasan/Ryan Pienciak leading Dave Zhu/Rafaelo Kazakov, 4-2 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)!  No Aces.

We blew our opportunity to get a break in the beginning and, even in the last game we were sitting on a Break Point.  There was a good tussle in some rallies between Dave and Ryan.

It was good tennis action overall for what started out as a sedate evening.  Cheers!

Samara's Notes: As always, I thank Kris for acting as our main host up at Cedar Grove and always providing us with his colorful and comprehensive reports.

Sincerely,
Frank Samara
