8/2/18:
"Mehta-Caputo at VP, W2 part of 9 at C.G.!":
There were two official sessions of GTA Thursday Tennis. The first one was in the late morning/early afternoon at the Verona Park Courts and it featured the "Grove Cup 21" Round of 16 Match between "The AM Rush" Anish Mehta and "NC-17" Nick Caputo (with both reporting); and the final session was at the Cedar Grove Courts where the contributors to this report were "Killer Kat" Kathy Sheldon and "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan.
We'll go to Verona first and then to Cedar Grove!
The Verona Park Courts Result:
"Grove Cup 21" Round of 16 Match:
Nick Caputo over Anish Mehta, 6-0, 6-0, to become the New # 7 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division while advancing to the Quarterfinals of the 21st Annual Grove Cup Men's Singles Tournament! Now that Caputo is in the Top 10 of the Advanced Division, he has now become overqualified for competition in the Intermediate Division and is forced to vacate the GTA Intermediate Title. Anish: 1 Ace!
The NC-17 Screening: We started this match at Verona Park at 11:30am on such a hot and humid day and we finished at 12:30pm. I was on today and it was a quick one.
The AM News: Nick is in a different league from me and he should be in the Top 3 at the very least - so I don't consider this to be an upset. He has great instincts, strategic thinking and experience of the sort that is rare to see at my recreational level. My main strength is my serve and I double faulted three times in the first game, which set the tone. That and Nick's offense strategy made this a total rout. I wish him luck in the rest of the tournament.
Samara's Notes: I thank both for their timely reporting. I congratulate Nick on a highly impressive victory! I also appreciate the candor and honesty of Anish. Many feel that Caputo is the odds-on favorite to win the Grove Cup and many of those same people like his chances against Chris Chiaro to then win the GTA Championship. The question may eventually be is Nick even overqualified for competition in the Advanced Division. If so, we may have to revive the on-again/off-again Pro Division.
We now head into the evening hours and move west to Cedar Grove for the rest.
The Cedar Grove Results:
W2 Round of 6 Match:
Fadia Nicolas/Arlene Hyde over Kathy Sheldon/Diane Raum, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5), to become the New # 7 Ranked Team in the Women's Doubles Division while advancing to the Semifinals of the W2 Women's Doubles Division! No Aces.
The Chat from Kat: Play began around 6:45 and, with the exception of a brief rain after the 1st Set which was an hour plus, the match ended around 9:15. Very close match! Both teams played hard. All were drenched as it was humid. Kudos to Fadia and Arlene! Kudos also to my partner Diane who was a fierce competitor!
Samara's Notes: I appreciate the timely and comprehensive reporting from Kathy. I congratulate Fadia and Arlene, but also offer hearty kudos to Kat and Diane. And even though this was a straight-set affair, it may very well be a Nominee for Women's Doubles Match of The Year at season's end.
Tito Castolo/Doinks Srinivasan over Kris Srinivasan/Joe Rodrigues, 6-4! No Aces.
Kris Srinivasan/Joe Rodrigues over Tito Castolo/Brenda Jordan, 7-6 (7-4)! Kris: 1 Ace on Brenda; and Tito: 1 Ace on Kris!
Samara's Notes: And also much appreciation to Kris who sent in the balance of the results. As always, greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
