"Spin hosts 18 at C.G., Kevin hosts 4 at The Bubble!":
GTA Wednesday Night Tennis took place at both The Cedar Grove Courts (hosted by "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli, aka Anka Boy…more on that in just a bit) and at The Wayne Bubble (the usual Night Owl session hosted by "Kevlar" Kevin Doyle).
After getting a text and e-mail from Kris Srinivasan, Spin arrived at Cedar Grove a little past 6:30. Upon his arrival, Brenda Jordan and Joe Rodrigues were getting ready to play a One-Setter against Nathan Fernandes and Dawn Peterson.
The tone for the evening was set by Nate as he commented and sneered at the tune that was playing in Spin's car. As Spin's Spyder belted out Paul Anka's "Put Your Head On My Shoulder," Nate said, "How can you drive a convertible like that with that kind of song playing?" The younger generation did not get the privilege of enjoying the songs from the 50's and 60's. Spin will soon school Nate about the music of that generation! The evening rapidly cooled down, but the tennis action stayed hot throughout the night. With the humidity being quite high it got rather raw as the evening progressed.
Samara's Notes: As a representative of the generation between Spin's generation and Nate's generation, I must interject with my opinion here. While there is nothing wrong with Mr. Anka's love song, I must concur with young Nate that this type of ditty is not what I would consider to be top-down blasting material. It would be more appropriate if Spin was trying to seduce some "sugar mama" out of her fortune the way she may have seduced some "sugar daddy" out of that same fortune back when that tune was still current. OK, now we go back to Anka Boy.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Joe Rodrigues/Brenda Jordan over Nathan Fernandes/Dawn Peterson, 6-4! Joe: 1 Ace on Nate.
Kris Srinivasan/Jose Gonzales over Dan Martinelli/Jorge Solano, 6-3! Jose: 2 Aces on Spin!
The Spin from Spin: Jose aced Spin on the very first serve of the set and then closed out that first game with another screaming ace on Spin once again. Jorge and Spin had their moments, but Kris and Jose left no doubt as to who was going to win this set.
Nathan Fernandes/Brenda Jordan over Jordan Bachvaroff/Sairaj Srinivasan, 6-2! Sairaj: 2 Aces on Brenda!
Jorge Solano/Abhilash Gadi over Joe Rodrigues/Jose Gonzales, 6-2! No Aces.
2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Doubles Match:
Nathan Fernandes/Natalia Sout over Dan Martinelli/Doinks Srinivasan, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0, as both teams entered the Mixed Doubles Division as the New # 45 and # 46 Ranked Teams respectively!
The Spin from Spin: After the Kris/Jose-Spin/Jorge One-Setter, Spin decided to sit. So did Nate. Moments later, Natalia arrived and we decided to hit it around. As soon as we got on the court, Doinks also arrived. Spin decided to set the sides as the D's vs. the N's. All were in agreement, so the Best of 3 Sets Match was set.
The 1st Set was painless and quick as Nate was his ever-steady self and Natalia came to play. Doinks did her best to keep us in it, but Spin's rust was back as he looked like someone who did take all winter off.
The 2nd Set started out with Nat and Nate up 3-0, but Doinks upped her game even more and Spin came around a little bit. We took the next 6 games as Doinks pleaded with her partner, "let's win a game!" First it was just 3 games and then we upped the ante to 6 games. Nat and Nate were reeling. We did push the contest to a 3rd and deciding set.
The old saying goes, "Be careful what you wish for" as Nat and Nate decided not only to win the 3rd Set, but to win 6 games in a row! Indeed that is what they did as Nate played error-free tennis and Nat poured it on with some really nice gets and smartly-placed winners. Doinks and I sank like the Titanic, but it was great fun nonetheless.
Jordan Bachvaroff/Dennis Cabanatan over Kris Srinivasan/Levy Lorenzo, 6-2! Jordan: 2 Aces on Levy!
Moka Pathan/Abhilash Gadi over Dennis Cabanatan/Levy Lorenzo, 7-6 (7-1)! Moka: 1 Ace on Dennis.
Kris Srinivasan/Jose Gonzales over Jordan Bachvaroff/Raj Tailor, 6-4! Raj: 1 Ace on Jose; and Jose: 1 Ace on Raj!
Kris Srinivasan/Raj Tailor over Dennis Cabanatan/Levy Lorenzo, 6-4! Raj: 1 Ace on Dennis.
Samara's Notes: Spin continues to make his presence felt as one of the premier hosts in the league. Keep up the good work, brother!
We now head up to The Bubble for the recap from Kevin.
The Wayne Bubble Result:
Kevin Doyle/Robin Wilson over Jeanette Pegg/Laurie Boughton, 6-1! No Aces.
The Kevlar Commentary: We just hit the rest of the evening. It was the last Wednesday session for the Night Owls.
Samara's Notes: I thank Kevin for submitting that score in a very timely manner.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
