10/7/17:
"Daddio-Pienciak at HP, Nate-Mole 1-Setters at AP, 5 play at C.G.!":
There were three sessions of GTA Saturday Tennis: an early morning one at Holster Park in Clifton featuring The Grove Cup XX Final Match between "Daddy O" Paul Daddio and "The Lumberjack" Ryan Pienciak (with both reporting), an afternoon one at Albion Park in Clifton featuring a hitting session that led to two Singles One-Setters between the GTA Champion: "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes and "Del Brotro" Mike Mole (as reported by Mike) and the usual evening one at The Cedar Grove Courts as "The Levitator" Levy Lorenzo acted as the impromptu host of a session that officially featured just five players (though there was a sixth one there who only got involved in a hitting session).
So we first go to Holster Park, then Albion Park and then finish this report in Cedar Grove.
The Holster Park Result:
Grove Cup XX Final Match:
Ryan Pienciak over Paul Daddio, 6-3, 6-2, to become the 2017 Grove Cup Champ, New # 2 Ranked Player in the Advanced Division and the next Top Contender!
The Ryan Report: We started play at 9am at Holster Park and finished around 10:50 or so. I tried to play conservatively while sparingly pick moments to be aggressive. It seemed to work, though Paul is very consistent and runs everything down. The real difference-maker was that I was able to hold serve on a few occasions. We were "off-serve" for most of the match. Paul didn't hold serve at all and I only won a few of my service games (I think twice each set). It was brutally humid and a 3rd Set would have had Paul calling the EMTs for me! I was lucky to get out of this one in straight sets.
The Dilly-o from Daddy O: Yes, Ryan was clearly the better player this day. He was more consistent and earned the victory.
The Consequences: Pienciak has now earned the next Title shot against reigning GTA Champion: "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes.
Samara's Notes: I thank both for their very timely reporting and I congratulate Ryan on a highly impressive victory and also on such a solid run through the most competitive field in the twenty year history of the Grove Cup Tournament.
I know Ryan does not want me to take away "The Lumberjack" moniker (so I won't), but I also must add another nickname – "The Real Deal" Ryan Pienciak! He is now without a shadow of a doubt the odds-on favorite to be named the Most Improved Player of The Year at the end of the season. And if he can topple Nate from the top of the GTA perch, he may very well end up being the Player of The Year as well. It should be a great match.
We now head north thru Clifton from Holster Park to Albion Park.
The Albion Park Results:
Nathan Fernandes over Mike Mole, 6-1! No Aces.
Nathan Fernandes over Mike Mole, 6-2! No Aces.
The Mole Memo: It started off as a hitting session and then it led to the two One-Setters played between 3pm and 4:30.
Samara's Notes: I thank Mike for his very timely reporting via text. And now we go to Levy who submitted the following recap in the same fashion.
I arrived at 6:30 followed by Jose Gonzales and Mike Kazlauskas. We started hitting and then Nick Inciong arrived, so we decided to play Doubles.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Mike Kazlauskas/Jose Gonzales over Levy Lorenzo/Nick Inciong, 6-1! No Aces.
Fadia Nicolas arrived when our set was at a 4-1 score. Just before we finished the set, Arthur Fontanilla arrived. Nick and I decided to sit. Fadia teamed up with Arthur in hitting against Mike and Jose.
After a few minutes of hitting, Mike and Arthur decided to hit only with each other on Court Two. So Nick and I were able to play again.
Levy Lorenzo/Nick Inciong over Jose Gonzales/Fadia Nicolas, 7-5! No Aces.
There were no other GTA players.
Samara's Notes: I thank Levy for reporting these scores in such a timely manner.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
