4/4/18:
"12 compete at The Bubble!":
There was just one session of GTA Wednesday Night Tennis and it was the usual Night Owls session up at The Wayne Bubble run by "The Riz" John Rizzo along with "Hollywood" Frank Samara acting as host to collect scores along the way.
Samara arrived at 9pm just as Rizzo was figuring out the pairings. With five ladies in attendance, he sent four of them to Court One for Women's Doubles. The fifth one, "Rockin'" Robin Wilson would be split up from her boyfriend, "Kevlar" Kevin Doyle, but they would remain on the same court as each would take turns teaming with either Rizzo or Samara. This action would take place on Court Three.
That left Sean McHugh, Ted Cedroski and Vlad Smolyanskiy to have a three-way hitting session on Court Two until we waited to see if a fourth player would arrive for them. Once it became obvious that was not happening, Rizzo put in the call to "The Adonis" Don Moya to join them for Doubles.
Thus, we had an official turnout of 12 competitors. Let's go to the scores!
The Wayne Bubble Results:
2 out of 3 Sets Women's Doubles Match:
Fadia Nicolas/Dawn Peterson over Kathy Sheldon/Jeanette Pegg, 6-4, 6-1, to successfully defend their # 18 Rank in the Women's Doubles Division! No Aces. This was the first official action of the session as the match got underway on Court One exactly at 9:12. The match was finished at 10:22
Frank Samara/Kevin Doyle over John Rizzo/Robin Wilson, 6-2! No Aces. It went like this: Frank held serve (Triple Game Point, Double Game Point, then the hold) and John was broken (Love-15, 15-All, 15-30 where a Double Fault set up Double Break Point and then came the break) for 0-2. Kevin was broken (got off to a 15-Love start, but then went straight to Double Break Point where he hit a Double Fault to break himself) to allow the opposition onto the scoreboard, but Robin was also broken (Love-15 shifted to 30-15 shifted again to Break Point and then came the break) for 1-3. Samara held again (Love-15 then point for point until 30-All, then came Game Point and the hold) for 4-1, but Rizzo then held (15-Love then point for point to Game Point and the hold) to pull to 2-4. Doyle also held (30-Love shifted to 30-All, then came Game Point and the hold), but Wilson was broken again (Love-15 then point for point to Break/Match Point which is where the break came) to take the loss. We played this on Court Three from 9:15 to 9:40. We then switched up the teams, but we will get to that in just a bit.
Don Moya/Vlad Smolyanskiy over Sean McHugh/Ted Cedroski, 6-0! No Aces. Don stepped out onto Court Two at 9:20. He did not make them wait long for him to warm up, so they got this one underway at 9:23 and it was over just fifteen minutes later at 9:38. They then switched up the teams to play a full match which we will report next since it was the next one to get started.
2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
Don Moya/Sean McHugh over Vlad Smolyanskiy/Ted Cedroski, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 140 and # 141 Ranked Teams respectively! No Aces. This one got underway on Court Two at 9:40 and the 1st Set finished at 10:10. Two minutes later, they headed into the 2nd Set which ended just about exactly at 11pm.
John Rizzo/Kevin Doyle over Frank Samara/Robin Wilson, 6-2! No Aces. Here's how it went down: John held (Love-15 shifted to 30-15 shifted again to Break Point, then came Deuce, Game Point and the hold) and Frank was broken (15-Love went straight to Double Break Point and the break) for 0-2. Kevin was broken (15-Love then point for point to Game Point, Deuce, Break Point and the break) to once again allow the opposition onto the scoreboard and then Robin held (30-Love shifted to 30-All, then came Game Point and the hold) to level things at 2-2. But from there, Rizzo held again (Love-15 went straight to Double Game Point, then Game Point and a Double Fault for Deuce, but then came another Game Point and the hold), Samara was broken again (15-Love shifted to 15-30, then it was 30-All, Break Point, Deuce, Break Point, 2nd Deuce, Break Point again and then the break), Doyle held (30-Love shifted to 30-All, then came Game Point and the hold) while Wilson was broken again, but it was a battle (15-Love then point for point until 30-All, Break/Match Point, Deuce, the 2nd Break/Match Point, 2nd Deuce, the 3rd Break/Match Point and finally the break) to get the "L!" We played this on Court Three from 9:43 to 10:23. We then switched up the teams again, this time back to the original match-up of the evening.
Frank Samara/Kevin Doyle over John Rizzo/Robin Wilson, 6-3! John: 1 Ace on Kevin! The dirty lowdown: Frank held (Love-15 went straight to Double Game Point, then came Game Point and the hold) and John was broken (Triple Break Point, Double Break Point and then a Double Fault to break himself) for 0-2. Kevin was broken (Double Fault set up Triple Break Point, but then it went straight to Deuce, Game Point, 2nd Deuce, Break Point, 3rd Deuce, Break Point again and finally the break) to once again let the opposition onto the scoreboard, but Robin was also broken (Double Fault set up Triple Break Point, then came Double Break Point and the break) for 1-3. Samara was broken (15-Love went straight to Double Break Point and the break) while Rizzo held (Love-15 then point for point to 30-All where a sideline Ace on Kevin set up Game Point, it went to Deuce, but then came another Game Point and the hold) to tie things up at 3-3! But from there, Doyle held (30-Love, 30-15, Double Game Point and the hold), Wilson was broken again (Love-15, 15-All then onto Double Break Point and the break) and then Hollywood held yet again (15-Love, 15-All then onto Double Game/Match Point and the hold) to get the win! We started this one on Court Three at 10:25 and it ended at 11:05.
The Skinny: During the indoor season at The Bubble (some of which was during the off-season for the GTA and some of which has now been the early part of our 2018 Season), I've been able to see the improvement of both Kevin and Robin. But on this night, I was especially impressed by Ms. Wilson's growing skill set. She makes good gets and has learned a lot about where to be on the court. But what she does best is hit well-timed and properly placed lobs (she likely learned this skill both from teaming up with and going up against Kathy Sheldon). Mr. Doyle was often like a hungry piranha feeding on the shots that came to him at the net and putting them away with effective volleys...though a few times that hunger came back to bite him as his unbridled enthusiasm called him to sail a few wide of the sidelines. Rizzo was trying new tactics including some successful lefty forehands. As for myself, I had a fairly solid outing...though I do remember getting too excited about a would-be Windmill Overhead Smash winner which I ended up sailing long past the baseline...DOH! Other than that though, I was fairly steady and effective throughout the evening.
We had a lot of fun during those three One-Setters as Kevin and Robin are always a joy to play with...and I think Ms. Wilson has already made herself a contender for Most Improved Women's Player of The Year. We will have to see if she maintains this momentum over the course of the season. Suzanne Bujara is another player that comes to mind when I think of a women's player who continues to make great strides of improvement on the court.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
