6/7 Results.

6/7/17:

"Dawn/Kris/Spin host 27 (2 new) at C.G.!":

There was a very full session of GTA Wednesday Night Tennis at The Cedar Grove Courts co-hosted by "Dominant" Dawn Peterson, "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan and "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli.

We will get a couple of results from Dawn, then turn this report over to Kris and then have Spin once again bat clean-up to seal the deal.

The Cedar Grove Results:

Jay Phoenix/Dawn Peterson over Moka Pathan/Kathy Sheldon, 7-6 (7-5)!  No Aces (apparently).

The K has his say: It looked like one of the closest and most well-fought match of the night.  A happy and satisfied Kathy left after this one (she also played another one which will be reported later).  Jay is a fighter and it is good to hear him every now and then.  Moka and Dawn were the classic silent assassins, though Moka did heave a cry or two.

Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay over Edgar Valencia/Dawn Peterson, 6-4!  No Aces (apparently).  Dawn says: "They are a great team!"

Samara's Notes: I thank Dawn for directly reporting the results that she was involved with in a very timely manner.  We now go to Kris.

It was a box office smash last night with a full house.  The GTA was on full display and was enriched by a couple of new players.  Charles Prothero (aka Charlie) is a young chap of 86 years old (he is a friend of Herb Reiner's) and Paul Daddio, coming in off the bench, was indeed a true young gun.

With my mind seemingly in a haze, I need to find a way to report the results that is hopefully on the right track.  It certainly is not going to be shoe-leather reporting.  Here is a brief report of last night's proceedings…and it is as follows:

Levy Lorenzo/Herb Reiner over Kris Srinivasan/Charles Prothero, 6-4!  No Aces.  It was the official GTA Debut of Charles Prothero.

We were down 2-5 and mounted a comeback, but not before poor Charlie was falling down on his side. It was scary, but luckily looked like just a scratch on the right knee.  Note to Levy: Go easy on Charlie...:-).  Herb wanted me to hit with him and Charlie.

Jordan Bachvaroff/Ryan Pienciak over Nathan Fernandes/Vinnie De Benedetto, 6-4!  No Aces.

It was a good match that saw Nate doing plenty of running while Vinnie would stand and deliver.  There were nice rallies, but a few misses here and there made the difference.

There is a good chance that I have mixed up some of the scores and/or players (applicable for some of the matches).  If so, I am happy for the beneficiary of the positive result and as for the victim, take it easy...:-).

Dan Hwang/Doinks Srinivasan over Levy Lorenzo/Paul Daddio, 6-1!  No Aces.  It was the official GTA Debut of Paul Daddio.

Dan was too good and consistent throughout the night.  Paul played decently and is a good player from the little I saw.

Dan Hwang/Tom La over Ryan Pienciak/Paul Daddio, 6-3!  No Aces.

Ryan Pienciak/Paul Daddio over Dan Hwang/Tom La, 6-4!  No Aces.

It was a couple of good One-Setters between these two teams with one set apiece.

Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay over Edgar Valencia/Laurie Boughton, 6-3!  No Aces.

Marijus and Sally were fantastic on this night, both playing aggressive tennis.  Both were also superb at the net.  But still, Ed and Laurie gave a good fight.

Kris Srinivasan/Tito Castolo over Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah, 6-2!  No Aces.

We didn't want to separate The Inseparables who ended up as "Les Miserables".  Actually, that's not a fair thing to say on two counts.  First of all, they played really well with attractive shots.  Secondly, Tito with his drop shots can easily mess up his opponents' tennis shots.

Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay over Abhilash Gadi/Laurie Boughton, 6-1!  No Aces.

Abhi and Laurie literally got run over Big Super Mario and Smackdown Sally.  It was one of those nights where Marijus and Sally just couldn't be contained.

Tom La/Kathy Sheldon over Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah, 6-3!  No Aces.

You know the result when Kathy is grinning ear to ear!

Nathan Fernandes/Doinks Srinivasan over Levy Lorenzo/Edgar Valencia, 7-5!  No Aces.

It was another good match for the night that was well-contested.  Ed showed his class and Levy displayed his grit.  After the match, while Ed and Doinks were conversing, she let him know that she lives right across the street from the tennis courts.  Ed's spontaneous response was classic: "You and Kris must be neighbors!"

Kris Srinivasan/Tito Castolo over Marijus Kuzavas/Sally Pillay, 7-6 (7-5)!  Marijus: 1 Ace on Kris; and Sally: 1 Ace on Kris!

Marijus and Sally were the players to beat for the night.  We did it, but not without a great fight.  Marijus was serving hot and after an even start, we were leading 5-3 before a spirited comeback.  There were attractive shots and punishing ones as well.  The aggressive play did unsettle us sometimes, but we chose to use our charm to counterpart…:-).

Well, Senthil Kumar was a no-show last night as he left work late.  He sounded like he would be coming late but, if he did, I completely missed him.  Vinnie came first and Spin later.  Both would get to play a few solid sets.

Our M2 Men's Doubles Tournament Match will hopefully take place on Friday night around 6:30 or so.  On Thursday night, we will have an MXD2 Mixed Doubles Tourney Match planned for a 6:30 start featuring Fernanda Toker and Tommy Reszkowski against Abhi and Laurie.

It was good to see Dino Celis walking briskly after a two hour therapy session.  Hopefully, we see him in action again soon.

Overall, it was an incredible night with an electric atmosphere reverberating in GTA Tennis action.

Samara's Notes: I thank Kris for his numerous contributions to the league.  He is the Billy Mumphrey of the GTA as he constantly displays "unbridled enthusiasm!"

Speaking of enthusiasm, we now allow Spin to close out this report (with a couple more contributions from The K Man as well).

It was another day of texts and e-mails attempting to set up the match that has now been scheduled for Friday night.  When I arrived, the courts were full of GTA Tennis seekers, not sneakers...seekers (hold on, I guess sneakers, too).

I would think the final total was in the low 20's, but I may have overstated the amount of players.  There was a lot of bravado on this night exuding from several players.  I was told to quiet down more than once…however, my enthusiasm would not be diminished.  Asking Spin to quiet down only makes him more boisterous!

The atmosphere was certainly electric and everybody had a great time.  Music and drinks would have been appropriate on this night.  Dino came early for his customary cameo and Senthil never showed even though it was he would who started the ball rolling to play the aforementioned match on this night.

Dan Martinelli/Vinnie De Benedetto over Abhilash Gadi/Laurie Boughton, 6-3!  Spin: 1 Ace on Abhilash; and Laurie: 1 Ace on Vinnie.

The K has his say: It was "Vintage Vinnie" and "Speedy Spin" going full throttle against the "Agile Abhi" and "Laughing Laurie."  The veterans were having a ball of a time.  Laurie was pretty good at the net and Abhi can move, indeed!  But the charging bull and silent slayer were too hot to handle.

The Spin from Spin: Laurie and Abhilash went up early at 3-1.  During those first four games, Laurie and Abhilash were almost flawless whilst Vinnie and I struggled.  The situation then reversed itself and we pulled out the victory.  Laurie hit several nice shots back to us while Abhilash is a virtual "get" machine.  He ranks up there with the most fleet of foot players that the GTA has to offer.

Samara's Notes: This is why I call Abhi "The Accelerator!"  We now go back to Spin.

Dan Martinelli/Vinnie De Benedetto leading Abhilash Gadi/Laurie Boughton, 4-3 (Incomplete when the lights went out at 10pm)!  Spin: 1 Ace on Laurie.

The K has his say: A glorious set with an incomplete run!  All the players were thrilled overall thinking how well they played.  Both the teams were well-balanced, but one man seemed to be extra-charged,:-).

The Spin from Spin: This set was shaping up to play out exactly opposite from the previous set. Vin and I went up 3-1 and then Laurie and Abhilash battled back.  Only the extinguished lights prevented them from knotting the score @ 4-4 and going on to victory.

Samara's Notes: And I also thank Spin for putting his "spin" on things at well.  Kris and Spin have become the "one-two punch" for the GTA up at Cedar Grove.  And The Doc did not overstate things…quite the contrary as we had a very impressive total of 27 players throughout the entire session!

Sincerely,

Frank Samara
