7/6/17:
"2 play at AP, 4 play at NTC, 15 play at C.G.!":
GTA Thursday Night Tennis took place at three locations: a late afternoon session at Albion Park in Clifton as "Magic" Mike Mole and "The S Bomber" Genalin Capan faced off in a couple of "Battle of The Sexes" Singles One-Setters (as reported by Gen), then an early evening session at Nutley Tennis Club (hosted by "The Riz" John Rizzo) and then the usual evening session at The Cedar Grove Courts where the usual host "The K Man" Kris Srinivasan did not act as the host.
Instead, we have report contributions made by his wife Doinks (aka "The Marathon Woman"), GTA Champion: "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes, "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli and "J-Rod" Joe Rodrigues.
Gen will begin this report, then we will get the result from The Riz and then we will go to Cedar Grove for the multiple-source recap of results.
And now we go to Gen!
Mike Mole and I met up at Albion Park around 3:45pm. The weather was nice. We hit for about one hour prior to playing a couple of sets.
The Albion Park Results:
Mike Mole over Genalin Capan, 6-4! No Aces.
We both held and then followed with an exchange of breaks for 2-2. Mike took the next 3 games to make it 5-2. I held and got the break to get it closer at 4-5. Then, Mike broke back for the win. We played this one from 4:45 to 5:20.
Mike Mole over Genalin Capan, 6-4! Mike: 3 Aces! Mike took the early lead at 2-0. I held for 1-2. Mike took the next 3 games for 5-1. I got the break and held for 3-5. Mike was broken on serve for me to get closer at 4-5. He then broke back to close out the set.
We had a few multiple Deuce games. It's been 3 weeks since I last played any tennis. Overall, it was two pretty good sets. Mike was serving well.
Samara's Notes: I thank Gen for her timely and comprehensive reporting. We now head to NTC for the result from The Riz.
The NTC Result:
2 out of 3 Sets Mixed Doubles Match:
Ray Spadaro/Laurie Boughton over John Rizzo/Denise Savino, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, as both teams entered the Mixed Doubles Division as the New # 37 and # 38 Ranked Teams respectively! No Aces.
Samara's Notes: I thank John for his very timely reporting of that result.
We now head up to Cedar Grove.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Nathan Fernandes/Janice Wang over Jordan Bachvaroff/Jay Phoenix, 6-4! No Aces.
Nate's Notes: Jay and Jordan played well to tie things up at 4-4 after being down 0-4. Janice had some crushing backhand winners that helped us take the next two games.
2 out of 3 Sets:
Nathan Fernandes/Janice Wang over Jordan Bachvaroff/Jose Gonzales, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5! No Aces.
Nate's Notes: The big hitters on the other side of the net were up in both sets, but some smart and steady play by us coupled with some untimely errors by them meant we went 3-0 on the night (in overall sets).
2 out of 3 Sets Doubles Match:
Mike Mole/Dave Zhu over Raj Shah/Kris Srinivasan, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, as both teams entered the Doubles Division as the New # 53 and # 54 Ranked Teams respectively! No Aces.
Joe Rodrigues/T.J. Shah over Senthil Kumar/Edwin Ortega, 6-3! No Aces.
Joe Rodrigues/T.J. Shah over Dan Martinelli/Guy Dupoux, 7-5! Guy: 3 Aces (1 on T.J. and 2 on Joe)!
The Spin from Spin: What a set this turned out to be! The estimated duration was about 70 to 75 minutes long! While other teams were completing 2 and 2 1/2 sets in the same amount of time, this set went on and on like a Steven Bishop song. The following link is provided for your listening pleasure (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljuJnUYozUg). It is a good song, by the way.
Guy Dupoux's serve is in The Top 2 or 3 of the league when it comes to pace. His first service game was about 8 minutes long which indicated this set was going to be a long one. There was a lot of hard hitting in this set. It was an even trade of games until Guy and I took a 5-4 lead. Joe and T.J. then took the final three games to win the contest.
Samara's Notes: I thank all those who contributed to this report in such a timely fashion.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
