5/2/17:
"Fernandes-Mole 1-Setter at AP, Spin hosts 19 at C.G.!":
GTA Tuesday Night Tennis took place at both Albion Park in Clifton (featuring an epic One-Setter between "Nate the Great" Nathan Fernandes and "Mr. Science" Mike Mole) and at The Cedar Grove Courts as "Spin Doctor" Dan Martinelli once again acted as the host.
We now turn this report over to the man simply known as Spin (who also reported the Albion score given to him by Nate).
The Albion Park Result:
Mike Mole over Nathan Fernandes, 7-5! No Aces.
Nate's Notable Notes: Mike delivered one of the most amazing comebacks in GTA history. Down 0-5, Mike won the next 7 games to seal the deal! Nate had Match Point up 5-4 only to see Mike battle back and eventually construct the epic comeback. So epic, in fact Nate stated, "Mr. Science is a bastard!"
Samara's Notes: It sounds like that will be a definite Nominee for One-Set Singles Match of The Year at season's end.
And now we go back to Spin.
Yours truly arrived at Cedar Grove around 7:15. It was yet another gorgeous night for GTA Tennis. Kevin Doyle and Brenda Jordan were battling Andrew Truong and Dawn Peterson. Vinnie De Benedetto was occupying the bench.
The early turnout was light but, in about 15 minutes, the GTA crowd overtook the courts like locust in a corn field.
Nate hit with Arthur Fontanilla, but no set was played.
The Cedar Grove Results:
Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan over Andrew Truong/Dawn Peterson, 6-4! No Aces.
Kevin Doyle/Brenda Jordan over Dan Martinelli/Dawn Peterson, 7-6 (7-5)! Spin: 1 Ace on Kevin.
The Spin from Spin: This set went on for quite awhile. Nate showed up from his defeat to Mike and had to wait. Everyone played quite well in this one and Brenda and Kevin had leads during the set and in the Tiebreaker only to see D&D battle back. It was fun. Brenda and Kevin put us away even with the tender-shouldered Brenda delivering under-handed serves.
Chris Chiaro/Vinnie De Benedetto over Kris Srinivasan/Andrew Kroessler, 6-4! No Aces.
Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah over Lou La Forgia/Ryan Pienciak, 6-4! Rajan: 2 Aces on Lou!
Lou La Forgia/Ryan Pienciak over Rajan Shah/T.J. Shah, 6-1! No Aces.
Nathan Fernandes/Dan Martinelli over Anish Mehta/Edwin Ortega, 6-4! No Aces.
The Spin from Spin: Nate came out of the gate rattled by his loss to Mike. I have never seen Nate so lethargic. At one point he stated, "I am at the lowest point ever." He turned it around and we made little comebacks along the way. Anish and Edwin are very crafty. This set easily could have gone the other way. Anish hits with generous pace and spin. Edwin's shot placement and spins also befuddled us on occasion. It was great fun.
Tito Castolo/Doinks Srinivasan over Andrew Kroessler/Laurie Boughton, 6-2! No Aces.
Chris Chiaro/Doinks Srinivasan over Kris Srinivasan/Andrew Kroessler, 6-1! No Aces.
Chris Chiaro/Kris Srinivasan over Lou La Forgia/Ryan Pienciak, 7-6 (7-3)! No Aces.
The K has his say: Incredible way to close out the night. Chris and Kris were down 1-5! We also faced 3 Match Points. We dug in one point at a time. Point by point, we staged yet another epic comeback. We did well to force the TB. You can say we did a Houdini to wriggle out of a sure loss. In all fairness, Lou and Ryan deserved the win. C'est la vie!
Samara's Notes: This has a chance at being a Nominee for One-Set Doubles Match of The Year at season's end. And we now go back to Spin to have him close out this report.
Back to The Spin Zone: On a personal note, several GTA players asked about Dino Celis. He tolerated his procedure well and came through with flying colors. He will be rehabbing like the late Amy Winehouse. His return to action may still take some time. But like Arnold in the "Terminator" movies..."he will be back"!!!
Samara's Notes: Thanks to Spin for his third straight night of hosting and reporting from Cedar Grove. He is now rivaling Kris as "the host with the most" up at C.G.! One thought, though…Amy Winehouse refused to go to rehab. Perhaps if she did, she would still be with us.
Sincerely,
Frank Samara
